- Here's George Salazar in performance as Seymour during the October 14, 2019 performance of "Little Shop of Horrors" at the Pasadena Playhouse.
The Pasadena Playhouse production of Little Shop of Horrors ran from September 17 to October 20, 2019. As opposed to the off-Broadway revival of the musical directed by Michael Mayer at the Westside Theatre, which strived to honor and emulate the tone of Howard Ashman's original production, and which happened to begin previews on the exact same night, the musical was completely redirected and reconceived from the ground up by director Mike Donahue, with a slightly grittier, contemporary edge, telling Vanity Fair: "It’s not like Audrey is on Snapchat. But it’s not like you’re walking into a period version of the 1960s. [Our production] is a little looser than that. The thing I became really excited about was: What if we don’t make any assumptions about how all this is supposed to go? What if we just started working on it as if we’re working on a new play? Yes, it’s sort of a B horror movie, and there’s a lot of deliciousness and fun in that, but what if we don’t think of having to make it schtickier? What if we approach it from a place of it is real and it is pedestrian?”
This reconceptualization was also applied to Audrey II, which strayed far from the path created by original designer Martin P. Robinson, with a completely new design by Sean Cawelti, who told the LA Times: “I wanted to make something that seems alien and extraterrestrial but also that gives an emotional reaction - you can’t help but smile. And when the plant opens its petals for the first time and reveals what’s inside, it’s not inherently scary but surprisingly whimsical and magical.”
According to Donohue, in the same LA Times piece: “The classic look can be nostalgic but also predictable. All of the language that’s in the piece is about how the plant stands out, how it catches people’s eyes immediately when people are walking by. There’s gotta be something about it that, in this drab and depressed and bleak world, just pops.”
Little Shop at the Pasadena Playhouse also stared MJ Rodriguez as Audrey (the first trans woman of color to play the role in a major production), Amber Riley as the voice of Audrey II, Cheyenne Isabel Wells as Crystal, Brittany Campbell as Ronnette, Tickwanya Jones as Chiffon, Kevin Chamberlin as Mushnik, and Matthew Wilkas as Orin (and others).

My rule for bootlegs on The Little Shop Archive and Disney Ashman Demos is to place a one year hold on uploading clips and a 5 year hold on uploading a bootleg in full.
Because of the quick run for this production, the innovative direction and design for the piece, and with all apologies to everyone involved in the Pasadena Playhouse production, and with Little Shop, I felt this seemingly once-in-a-lifetime production needed to be seen and is the one exception I will make to the rule.
What you wrote in the description looks interesting to share on my LSOH page, Audrey 2's Blog Of Horrors, ok if I I repost? (Along with the video)

No, I don't feel comfortable with that for this. However, my source article, "‘Little Shop of Horrors’ in Pasadena: Secrets of a radically reconceived Audrey II," has some great stuff in it that I couldn't include, along with Entertainment Weekly's "In Mj Rodriguez's Audrey, a big step for a Little Shop"
His voice is heavenly
best quality: their wiggles
Best and most diverse cast ever. Hispanics, POCs, and more! I loved this production when I saw it.
And a trans woman!! 💖💖
That is the coolest Audrey II I've ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please post Feed Me if you can because i would LOVE to see more of the plant!
I saw this production and the plant never gets bigger. its always the same puppet
@@alejandroteuffer how does that work? How does the plant eat people then?
@@alejandroteuffer that’s not necessarily true. there are different versions of Audrey II. For example there is the puppet that they use in Feed Me that is just the head and tentacles.
@@hedgehog2328 weird vine things come down from the ceiling and eat people. you can find a full version of the musicals act 1 and 2 on youtube
Thank you so much! I wasn’t able to see the show and desperately wanted to see his take on such an iconic character!
Amazing Audrey II! How'd they do that?!
Also props to George Salazar, he has great comedic delivery.
I heard this production gets darker, I'd like to see that
Oh. Yes. ..........there is...........some death

Thank you so much for this! I’ve only started to look this up because of George And MJ’s Suddenly Seymour and this is such a cute scene!
I was so lucky to see this live, but wanted to relive it :') ty for this
Is there a full bootleg??
Yes there is :) Idk abt any others, but for the Pasadena Playhouse one (the one this vid is from) search: ‘Act I | Little Shop Of Horrors | Pasadena Playhouse’ and it should come up. For the second act it’s the same title but instead of ‘Act I’ it’s ‘Act II’. The start of it for the first song or like half of the first song isn’t amazing, but the quality does get better and it’s so worth it for the George Salazar version I think :) if you want the link instead lmk
ive watched this so many times
Man I whish I could have gone and seen this
Can you share where you got the bootleg?
thank u so much for uploading!!
What an amazing twoey!
How on earth does this Audrey ii puppet work????
daveatron probably someone’s sitting under the table and they are using magnets
Looks like a marionette to me, probably someone up above with strings. The open mouth mechanism tho is crazy cool, idk how they did that
the table is faux!! the stuff is only in the front and underneath is empty, theres a line where the puppet can move across!
“Micheal in the bathroom” needs more attention
ITS WALKING LIKE A PENGUIN
That puppet is amazing
This is my favorite song
I love you so much.
