Just you know, sister, that your name will be entered into the lexicon as 'Water heater Goddess'. After a week of cold showers for my husband & I, living with a stinky 12 year old boy, following the pilot lighting directions countless times, reading the manual & then my husband finally clicked on your video! I CANNOT thank you enough. One little sticker indicating a reset button that looks nothing like any button I've ever seen...until your genius entered our world! Thanks & thanks & thanks! We could not afford a technician visit, much less a new water heater! Our eternal gratitude! You are a queen, my friend! Namaste!

Thank you! Luckily this happened in the summer and not the dead of winter! As like the others, I am grateful that you posted this video. For those reading, however, this reset button is for the self-igniting box which is typically electrical. If the water heater was tripped up, the culprit is probably a GFI Outlet switch. I would also encourage watchers to check the outlets in which the igniter box is plugged into-as this may be a deeper issue leading to a burnout of the box itself.

I live on my own, and I'm two weeks in to a hip replacement. I couldn't bend down to look at the bottom of the heater. Following the steps in your video got me my water back on. It is Saturday evening, which is not a great time to try and get a plumber out to fix it. Reseting that Thermal Cutoff Switch did the trick, and I was able to do it all bending just enough to reset the part and then light my heater. I'd have had a weekend without hot water, or maybe even dislocated the new hip messing with it. You are an Internet angel. In my instance that black reset button clicked back in when I pushed it. I didnt need to hold it in, just press it until it clicked back in. A bit like resetting a GFCI power outlet. After reading up on this, the switch typically trips when the heater isn't getting enough air (not the only reason). Sure enough I'd placed a box on top of the heater which was affecting air flow. Thank you Jeni.

GOD BLESS YOU, YOU AMAZING GODDESS! I’ve been working on this for over twenty four hours, even to the point of planning my schedule for me and my roommate to go shower at my gym before/after work because it’s the weekend and of course my landlord isn’t available til Monday. Plus it’s Thanksgiving week and I’ve got relatives coming in.
I got super stressed out and went for a run and spent the entire run mentally preparing, stressing out more and just bracing for the fact that I’d have to take a cold shower when I got back.
You have saved me. I cannot thank you enough. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

My watre heater is 12 years old model N40S61-403 and never any trouble all this time. But today I don't have any hot water. From long past experience I've found the trouble to be the thermal device that is situated in the pilot light flame. I checked several online places for this part and NONE OF THEM list ANY parts for my model ! As a last resort I've come to RUclips. And I'm so glad I have because your fix was my trouble. According to the manual that came with my heater, the part you reference is called the "thermal switch". The part that you push is white on my switch and not as easly visible as the black one on yours. My manual shows this switch in the troubleshooting flow chart, but nothing about pushing the buttom. With no parts listed as avalable, my only recourse was to replace the heater. Your help is prolonging that need perhaps for a long time. Thank you very much.

WOW.... THIS WAS SOOOOOOOOOOO helpful! I had already tried to start pilot, with ZERO luck, had decided to take one last shower with barely tempid water, (let's be honest, it was cool enough to be unpleasant) thinking that would be my last chance before water went full on cold and then I was looking at water heaters online, when I found your video and poof... hot water heater came back to life! So grateful! RUclips as platform to share helpful videos is amazing! Thanks.
