    my favorite version of that "cheater loses because he sucks" thing that woolie mentioned happened to me back in dark souls 2. back then the most popular pvp area in the game was a bridge at the start of old iron keep. there would always be a million red soapstones/dragon eyes that you could activate to summon other people. cheaters showed up on occasion, and they were pretty much impossible to kill. they had infinite health and all that garbage
    well back when the game launched there was a property on ultra greatsword running attacks that launched the person hit by them into the air - they were called golf swings. so the method for killing cheaters was to switch to an ultra greatsword, catch them with a running attack, and then send them in a perfect arc over the railing on the bridge into the lava below. unfortunately since fromsoft is ran by punks this property was patched out but it was very fun while it lasted

      Another fun instance of fucking up cheaters comes from Dark Souls 1. Cheaters gave themselves infinite hp + defense but there were exactly 2 work around to that for regular players. 1: gravity and 2: Bleed. Bleed was a status effect that some weapons naturally applied, such as the uchigatana, that took longer to build up BUT also did more damage based off the opponents max hp. This meant that if someone have infinite or a high enough number that it may as well be infinite were to be attacked by a bleed weapon they would eventually instantly die due to bleed-out. Shit was goofy. Look up a video called 'Dark Souls 1: hacker dies to bleed out'

A good, stern lecture from a friend I respected, and the disappointed glares from everybody else, snapped me out of that phase really quickly. It really is a hollow waste of everybody else's time. On The Orange Box, on PS3, you could play TF2. And one day, people learned how to manipulate their save files to hack the game, becoming invincible, changing their character colors, noclipping, and full on modding public servers in ways that could and frequently did completely break the entire game. Hackers were altering spawn points to be identical for both teams, and for respawn to be instant, and then assigning themselves to a third team and giving themselves 100 percent crits and infinite ammo, so they could literally drop 16 people into an infinite explosion to get hundreds of kills per minute. There were only five or six servers at any one time and every single one of them was inundated with invincible hackers with boxes built around the capture points and the time set to infinity and the doors to the spawn locked.
    This made the game, as you can imagine, unplayable. And then it became a different game for me, because I, as a nonhacker, had to learn how to hack super shittily. HOWEVER I learned how to get around the two forms of invincibility, one of which simply set your health to zero without killing you, making it impossible to drain HP because you have none, and a different one that essentially randomized your health to obscenely high levels. The only actual cheat I used was embedding a command to fire after every button I pressed on my controller that would clear the cheat overlays from the server itself, which negated the zero health bug enough to allow the hacker to be killable with a backstab, making all hackers killable, but only with backstabs, and only until the hacker restarted their overlay, giving me a brief window to kill them with a backstab-overlay clear combo bound to the same button.
    This led to several months where TF2 was a game you could only play as a spy, and you could only fight supernaturally powerful hackers as they noclipped around trying to pin people inside objects that they were actively spawning in, and not being hidden while you weren't invisible meant that you were about to be instakilled by infinite crit rockets. You had to abuse the invisistab glitch to kill them before they knew you were there and so they couldn't see you when you were running away, or bait their noclip flybys into small corridors so they could actually be attacked, or stabbing people jammed in the capture points in the top of the head to remove them. There were servers that were lost causes, because there were hackers who had learned to literally erase their own player model from existence and kill people with some sort of picker command just by looking at them through the spectator feature, or even unassign them from teams so they couldn't even spawn. Eventually the hackers would start trying to come after me personally when they realized it was the same person killing them occasionally, leading to hilarious dominations when they could be invisistabbed through their cheats multiple times while they were trying to find the invisible spy hiding in his own teams spawn that they were noclipping into.
    After some months of this, some people who were much better hackers than I was figured out how to essentially uncorrupt public servers by hacking them into the "svcheats0" mode, disabling that kind of hacking by going in and rebooting them minus cheats. Notice I didn't say anything about Valve, who said that it was EA's problem, because they published the game on PS3 or some shit, and EA couldn't be fucked.

Cloakstabbing bitchass modders felt so great after going to all that time and effort to turn their cheats off and make them mortal. ALMOST as good as doing it to them so much that they would abandon the server to fuck up a different one, in the best case scenario without having irreversibly destroyed the first one, and having a normal game for once as a sort of victory.

    I'm surprised they didn't mention the Game Dev Tycoon thing. If you pirated the game, it would play as normal for a while, but eventually the game would implement pirates that reduced your profits bit by bit, until every game you put out was a flop and made no profit. And there wasn't a workaround or way to stop it from happening and getting worse.
    And you'd see people making post on the forums asking about it, even with phrases like 'is there a DRM unlock that'll stop this', and people in the know would have free reign to mock them about it.

    I'm one of those people that played on Alter IW Net servers. They're basically custom servers for CoD4 and MW2 that had game modes like Infection and even map builds like Halo's Forge mode. It even had a server browser of all things.
    The thing is though, there's a lot of cheaters. There are low brow cheaters that basically auto aim on enemy heads the moment you go into their field of view, or you get the game breaking cheaters that fly around the map and shoot everyone like a flying mobile turret.
    I've encountered cheaters as far back as HLDM, CS1.6, and various Valve Source games, but those custom Modern Warfare servers were the ones I remember the most. And that's because you actually have a chance of winning against the average CoD cheater. It's always a satisfying feeling when you actually win against one... Unless you find out that your team also had a cheater, lol. It just turns into a battle of whose cheater is stronger then.

    • @conspiracypanda1200
      @conspiracypanda1200 4 года назад +4

      There's a very fine moral line when it comes to piracy. If you're pirating a thing that you can't get in your country/does not exist anymore within legit circles/is priced impossibly high and therefore only made to catch whales...good job! No normal person is going to blame you for that shit. Hell, it's practically archeology in some cases! You could be preserving a bit of history in a franchise that would have otherwise been lost.
      However. If the thing you are pirating has literally _just_ come out/is being sold on an accessible platform at a fair price...don't pirate that shit. It's not even a money argument at that point. The only people who pirate on Day 1 of release are literally entitled scumbags who don't want to and, in fact, never intended to pay for a readily avaliable product. Also, they're stupid. Seriously. Do you know how many companies release their own "pirated" (read: trapped) copies of their game online Day 1 before anyone else can just to trap these idiots? It's a lot. And it's funny _every time!_

    • @99sins
      @99sins 4 года назад +4

      @@conspiracypanda1200 Slight disagreement:
      1. Pirating can also be a form of boycotting (although at that point I'd rather people just bite the bullet and not even give the game relevancy by playing it AND talking about it at all). Especially with the amount of scumbaggery happening in """AAA""" industries it really only benefits the corporate scumbags that will then just fire the devs (which get paid for their labour making the game, not based on the success of the title) anyways to get more money.
      2. "priced impossibly high" can be relative. If you're some poor shmuck then a lot of things are going to be considered "impossibly high" for you when it's either a game or not starving. At that point I'd rather have pirates talking about and promoting the game through word of mouth than let a game fade into obscurity because not enough people are talking about it.

    • @conspiracypanda1200
      @conspiracypanda1200 4 года назад +2

      @@99sins yeah the "priced impossibly high" point was really vague. I meant that bit in reference to like...HD sets for 12 episode anime that isn't released outside of japan and is priced at half a grand or whatever. Not as applicable to games, i know, but certainly a reason for piracy in general. At that point you either pirate the lower definition series that they wont sell you or don't interact with the franchise at all.
      Boycotting through piracy is also another weird grey area, and one I where I can't form a proper opinion because, honestly, boycott piracy seems a little bit weak-willed to me. It's like calling smokers "stupid, lung-diseased addicts" while you yourself are munching down on entire cakes and getting diabetes from it. Like you, I'd rather skip on a game/company's products entirely as a form of boycotting rather than remain addicted to their content through piracy. It always feels like (to me at least) the people who claim to pirate for boycott-based reasons are either trying to assuage their own conscience as they indulge their addiction OR they are the kind of person who pirates everything regardless and wants to bask in the feeling of being mistaken for a true moral paragon.

      Look my first 100 hours in Skyrim were on a pirate copy right after launch. I'm not ashamed of that. Eventually I grew tired of the game and uninstalled. Months later I saw some mods and decided I wanted to play again the value proposition of risk to reward had changed, I knew I liked the game and the effort of finding the least virus riddled copy online and cleaning it up only to have to repeat the process next update made purchasing a legit copy worth it.
      The simple truth is that I don't buy single serving games, if I won't reinstall it sometime next year to play it again, I probably won't be paying for it.
      Honestly thought I REALLY don't see much of a difference between a Humble Bundle and piracy other than the metrics and the assurance to the developer that the game is patched and running as intended.

  • @conspiracypanda1200
    @conspiracypanda1200 4 года назад +3

    The thing about cheating is that it can only create a playable environment if literally everyone is cheating at the exact same time. Watching two explosive fire spell hackers go at it in Dark Souls was probably one of the most chaotic and destructive things I have ever seen in my life. Anarchy servers in Minecraft also have hacked client battles that are hectic and terrifying and are over in a flash. But these are very specific and cool examples of cheating that definitely do NOT apply to every game. After all, most cheaters dont cheat for the spectacle or to compete against their fellow cheaters in a way that pushes the limits of the game; they just want that big leaderboard number because apparently that's all that matters?? And so they intrude on vanilla games to crush hundreds of normal players without even looking at the screen; killing their enemies in 1 lame punch; never allowing their healthbar to fall below 999999; hovering 10 feet in the air where no obstacles can reach them until the timer runs out... even though it will _never_ be fun, nor will the number of crowns/victoriy royals ever fill the void inside of them. It's just sounds so _boring_ ... The only thing I understand less is people who use bots, but even they tend to do it to collect and sell hats from smurf accounts or something idk.

    So could probably do both, send these guys to cheater island so they can still play, but suspend them from regular play for a week or two adding more for each offense.

    Cheater Island sounds like a reality tv show where people who cheated on their significant other are sent to a deserted island and put through torturous challenges to redeem themselves in their significant other’s eyes, who are watching from home.
    I’m not much for reality tv but I’d watch the hell out of Cheater Island.

    • @99sins
      @99sins 4 года назад +1

      That ain't redemption anymore. That's just a lesser form of getting tarred and feathered which I don't think would help the problem since the focus is on "bad people deserve bad things" instead of looking into why that kind of shit happens that leads people to do shit like that and forming preventative measures.

    When you got caught cheating, you could still play like normal, see everyone, all that.. but you couldn't ever interact with anyone, and no one could see you.
    You were essentially playing singleplayer and you wouldn't have any idea. It was chalked up as "desync" and the creator had a great time browsing complaints about it on forums before just putting cheaters in Gay Baby Jail.

      Those words literally were never said in the video. They implemented Epic Anti cheat not because it was better, but because of the negative backlash cheaters were causing by posting these clips and telling everyone the game is buggy. Even with cheater Island, the good hackers would also find a way around, so like Pat and Woolie said, sometimes its just better do the ban method of anti cheat.

    Honestly, in situations like this i think that a good way of dealing with it is having the Cheaters allowed to play. But. They are branded as cheaters in game. They can get to the crown and take it, but if they are marked as cheaters, it's revealed to be a fake cardboard crown that doesn't count to the win. Like, make it damn clear it's a cheating punishment so they can't pass it up as a bug.
