- Make funky Christmas cards using the "Slice" tool in Cricut Design Space.
These card designs have been inspired by the "negative punch art" technique which is usually done with metal card punches.... but we have Cricuts, so we can use those instead!
If you'd prefer to use my pre-made card designs rather than create them yourself, you can find these two card designs (and over 50 other projects) inside the Craft with Sarah Clubhouse: craftwithsarah...
Happy crafting,

This popped up in 2024 for me. And i love this idea. thank you.... I have been looking for ideas for my double-sided christmas paper.
That's great, I'm so pleased you love the idea! I hope you enjoy making it 😁
Thank you for the most belpful tutorial for new Cricut users!
You're so kind! Thank you. 😃
Sarah that's brilliant. Thank you so much for giving us easy to understand tutorials. I love this technique and you explain things so clearly that it's easy to follow along xx
You are so welcome! I'm so please the instructions were easy! 🥰
I’m in the U.S. and I couldn’t get it to align with control or shift. I cannot wait to make some of the cards you’ve shown. I look forward to making cards and holiday surprises for my family. Thank you so much.
Oh that's strange. Do you have a Windows computer or a Mac?
Love the way you explain things in an understandable way 🙂
Thank you! :)
I made a few of these this Christmas with various shapes but didn't know they had a proper name. I've also done it where I used the piece left over from cutting out snowflakes as a banner on the card.
My favorite free snowflake design is the snowflake panel in DS. Take your card base, cut out a square with a border on one half. Weld in the snowflake panel. Put some glitter cardstock behind and it's spectacular!
That sounds lovely, especially with the glitter card. Great idea to use the shape that's cut out inside the card!
Great tutorial. Thanks for posting. I’m going to try this card for Christmas.
Awesome! I hope you enjoy making it :)
Thank you! I’ve been trying to use my Cricut more in my card making. This is a great technique. ❤
Glad you enjoyed it! This is such a nice technique for card making, and quick to do too! 🥰

Thank you for video, I would love to do the dog card but can’t find it on cricut access.
Hi Paula, the link is design.cricut.com/landing/project-detail/5fc8ecda37b84d0f8874f8f0
I wish I’d found you before Christmas! That same thing happened to me where the drawn letters disappeared but still printed.
It really confused me when it first happened, it was so frustrating! It seems to be fixed in the newer version od Design Space though (6.1.148)
Lovely video, thanks. Issue still not fixed in Cricut.
Enjoyed this, however, I wanted to use my own card stock (like you did) but I had trouble aligning it. Please advise
Please can you email a screenshot of what your Design Space screen looks like (including the layers panel) to sarah@craftwithsarah.com and I'll take a look?
Sarah thank you for a great video. Do you have a link to the dog Christmas tree one. I’m a newbie and can’t find it anywhere.
The image for the dog tree in Cricut Access is #M11AE84D1 - it's called "Dog Christmas Tree" and it's in an image set called "Christmas Tree Magic".
Oh my, I have just followed your instructions step by step, and it turned out great! Only problem, I do not have an envelope ... yikes! Looks like I going to have to attempt that one by myself. Thank you so much for the tutorial, enjoyed it and it was explained very well. Subscribed!
I'm glad you enjoyed designing the cards :) There are some envelope templates in Cricut Access under "Images" but you might need to play about with the sizing to get it to fit your card.
I'm sure you've figured out the disappearing text by now but just in case. Apparently the secret is to click on the card base first, then the text box and then it shouldn't disappear. It has something to do with the order things are selected.
Thank you! Yes, if you select the layers in a different order before "Attaching" them, that can help the layers stay in the right order. It's a shame that it's still an issue.
Found this video, very easy to follow instructions. Can these cut files be used on the Brother Scan and Cut?
Unfortunately this tutorial is for Cricut Design Space which doesn't let you export files, so you can't load them into your ScanNCut software.
I really wanted to try the dog Xmas tree and searched for Xmas tree as you suggested. After about 35 minutes, design space had slowed down so much that I was losing the will to live - then it crashed -as usual. I had to close it down and didn't bother trying again. Cricut support just tells you to uninstall and reinstall design space but that never solves the problem. I wish that after all the years of glitchy software, cricut would have sorted this by now 🙁
Oh I'm so sorry! Design Space can be so glitchy at times and I understand your frustration. I hope you can get going with the project again soon. 🥰
Thank you!
You're welcome!
is there a way of using the negative punch tech on one layer of card, every time I try it ends up cutting down the score line and halving the card... at my whits end 😂
It sounds like your score line is still set to "cut" and not "score". Look at the Operations dropdown near the top left of the screen to check it's set to score. Or, delete the score line layer :)
What size would an envelope be for the snowflake size you made?
It's a 5x7 inch card. I buy premade 5x7 card blanks and envelopes.
Lovely cards
I can’t find the dog one on access though ??
Send an email to sarah@craftwithsarah.com and I'll share the Project with you :)
Hi Sarah, I cant find the Christmas Tree with the dogs. Can you send me the message with the link from the Design Space? Thank you!
It's here: design.cricut.com/landing/project-detail/5fc8ecda37b84d0f8874f8f0 :) The image number is #M11AE84D1
Oh no! I tried but when I went to splice the snowflake it was blanked out... so I couldn’t do it 😭😭😭 I really wanted to make my first ever card and I just can’t do it. It’s so frustrating I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
I’m just about to give up on this cricut thing... everyone makes things seem so easy.
I just can’t get my head around it.
Don't give up!
For the Slice to work, you need to make sure you only have two layers selected. If your snowflake has multiple layers, you need to "Weld" all the snowflake layers together (or delete ones you don't want) so that you only have one snowflake layer and one rectangle selected for the Slice to work.
Hi Sarah I am trying to make the dog one but DS wont let me slice it. Could you help me please.
Hi Sharon. Make sure you are only selecting two layers to slice and that none of the layers are in a Group. If that doesn't help, please send a screenshot of your Design Space project, including the layers panel, to sarah@craftwithsarah.com and I'll take a look :)
@@CraftWithSarah I did away with some of the items so to make it one layer. Then I could slice it.
