Saints were minutes away from implementing a ground breaking four-qb system where all four stand shoulder to shoulder in the shotgun and whoever catches the snap is the qb for that play
Legendary comment
All the other QBs go out for a route. The defense would never know what's going on
The flea flickers would have been crazy with only one wideout
I would be terrified of an offense that featured Brees, Winston, Mahomes, and Hill. Say what you want about each of them individually, but altogether that’s a big yikes
Smh🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️😂😂😂😂
This was the biggest gut punch ever. I wish I never knew
same
Well the saints could of drafted Brady....or Rodgers
i bet mahomes wouldnt have minded the extra money he’d get by trucking and injuring defenders, oh well same old aints
@@johntruxal432 bruh literally every team could’ve drafted brady at least five times over, that’s not saying much. and who’s to say he would’ve developed how he did under anyone other than belichick? he definitely wouldn’t have under the paper bag era saints.
@@neilflack1756 Literally every team could of drafted mahomes... he could of had a career ending injury last season. Isn't this comment section completely about could of ? 🤔😂
That Alex Smith, almost MVP season with the Chiefs is the most overlooked season ever.
Alex Smith and Teddy Bridgewater will never get the respect they deserve
26 TDs isn’t MVP numbers. He wasn’t good the last half of the season
@@jamesfagan5694 we had best record in football Alex Smith led In qbr and passing percent and completions... just no-one is winning mph with check downs lol
He was only an “MVP candidate” for the first 5 weeks. The rest of the season he was regular Alex Smith.

Saints pass on Mahomes
Michael Thomas... Cries in Slant
Chiefs traded up. Saints didn't have a chance to pass up
@@raunchymangos7468 yeah they traded way up since they were just in the playoffs. Pretty much caught everyone by surprised except John Gruden. When it was announced they traded up he said, "I think they're gonna go for Mahomes." Then fist bumped Mel Keiper when he was right.
Saints passed on Watson
The Bears though.......😭😭😭
I just want to say "Thank You" to Alex Smith. He knew his time was up in KC but he still took PM under his wing and taught him so much about the NFL game. He is a true Professional and a great person.
Go KC!!
Go KC and Go Alex Smith.
Cmon pat. Chiefs had to trade up with Buffalo at 10, whereas NO had the 11th pick. Houston traded up to 12 also for Watson
THANK YOU! So irritating that people forget this.
Teams trade 1 spot for that exact same reason, it has happened before (example: trent richardson)
It’s easy to remember Mahomes is #15 he wore 5 in college and was drafted with the 10th pick 5+10=15 I don’t know if that’s why he picked it, but it’s interesting either way.
@@Lastclerk3 yoga stretch
Exactly, everyone knew the Chiefs were gonna get a QB..
Meanwhile Ryan Pace had both Watson AND Mahomes available at No. 2, and picked Mitch Trubisky.
**cries in Bears fan**
Ski Ben the Poetry God I’m old enough to remember when KC took QB Todd Blackledge in 1983 & passed up on Hall of Famers Jim Kelly & Dan Marino. KC didn’t draft another QB in the 1st round for another 35 years, until Mahomes.
All we know is pain
The Chiefs were the perfect place at the perfect time. A wise and skilled veteran willing to graciously pass the torch and coaching staff and offense that could support the young man. Couldn't have set the table better.
Mahomes is a Saint, he's just a Chief.
Can they interview the Bears management on how they passed on Mahomes 😂
Unfortunately they almost took him. Pace told Mahomes that he was their number one QB prospect when the bears had him for a private workouy and would take him. But then I don't know what the heck happened and as a bears fan, I don't even want to think about it. I personally though Watson was the best College QB I've ever seen. Can't believe If Nagy was with the bears in 2017, they would've taken Mahomes. Or Watson. Definetly not Trubisky, as Nagy "hated" Trubisky when he initially evaluated him but Mitch slowly grew on him after talking with him for some hours. Crazy and depressing when you think about it. Unless you are a chiefs fan
@@donsolos Allen was actually taken one pick ahead but I get your point.
@@donsolos You can't really count Josh Allen since he was drafted the year after and the Bears had already invested a #2 pick on a supposedly "franchise QB" the year before.
Must we continue to rehash this failure?! 😭😭😭😑
@@donsolos And by that logic, then the saints passed on Mahomes. Allen went a pick earlier then when the bears picked roquan smith
Bruce Arians wanted him at 13 but the Cardinals weren't willing to move up.
Exactly what I was gonna say😭😭😭
They also wanted Watson and he got picked at 12
Same thing with Ben McAdoo at the Giants. Mara family said no cause they wanted to keep building around Eli hence the Evan Engram pick. Ben was a joke but one thing he got right was the Giants needed to move on from Eli much earlier than when they did.
@@TheJoker-mr9rp To be honest Eli didn't have much of a team for most of his career
Now Bruce is coaching TB12, against PMIII.
Mahomes in a Dome Stadium. Let that sink in. He Would’ve SHATTERED Drew brees passing records
As a saints fan, I feel so much pain in my spirit right now.
I feel you on that 😭🤧
chiefs had 27th pic they moved up
1) this isn't the first time he's said this
2) Payton also evaluated Tom Brady and said he would be great and should be drafted in the Top 3 Rounds but nobody listened because he was the "new guy" at the time.
3) Sean Payton played QB and knows how to evaluate a QB like no-other
That's a shame - From a Panthers fan. 😂
😂
Same Im a falcons fan so we both dodged a bullet there😅
Everybody from east tx knew pat was a star played against him in high school dude was a baller
It was rumored that Brees was going to retire if the Saints missed the playoffs in 2017, if the Chiefs didn’t trade up and the Saints picked Mahomes instead of Lattimore the Saints would’ve missed the playoffs in 2017 for sure.
Lattimore was a difference maker
@@RASTAGOOB he never shows up half of the time acting stupid against no names which hurt the saints

@@jrr9035 Yeah you’re right... you guys have Drew Brees who’s going to play many years to come. I’m shaking in my boots just thinking about it. Oh wait...
@@jrr9035 yeah, but a young patrick mahomes would mean a longer losing streak. Drew brees is about to retire so the saints are no longer going to dominate the division.

He would have sat behind Brees for 3 years
Chiefs was the better option

As a panthers fan I’m so glad he was drafted by the chiefs
In another interview a year ago Payton said he’s not sure who he would have drafted if Lattimore and Mahomes had both been available at 11.
I remember that too, I think they were taking Lattimore either way
This is old news. Kansas city jumped ahead of us and took him from us
Fake story
He would have looked pretty sick in a Saints uniform! The all black sleeve black pants and gold helmet!
But that red jersey... -chiefs fan
It's funny how this story has changed. Initially, Payton said he had Mahomes and Lattimore on the board, and that Lattimore was rated higher than Mahomes for them. According to Sean, after Lattimores DROY performance, they would have taken Lattimore if both were on the board at 11.
As a chiefs fan I'm soooo grateful we traded up for that tenth pick
Any Texas Tech fan knew what they got. Its solely the reason why i won my football pool all year long.
The Bills ownership wanted Mahomes, the front office did not. The Chiefs traded up from 27th to 10 to select him. The Cardinals also wanted him, and Houston, who ended up trading in front of Arizona to get Watson. Crazy draft with some teams being aware of what others were thinking while others took their chance, stood pat, and lost out.
When Brees got hurt the first time then Mahomes wouldn't have given him his job back.
this like 3 years old news bruh
Thank you!
Almost a Cardinal too. They wanted him or Watson, but no one expected the Chiefs who has a great QB already and the Texans who just gave a big contract to a QB the prior year to move up and draft a the two QBs they wanted.
Olds news if you followed this draft in 2017.."they were likely very interested" saying for sure he was 100% taking him is how memory's fade.
It felt like i was the only one who wasn’t surprised as if this wasnt said in 2017
@@Himatan10 Drew Brees even said this in 2017. He said Payton called him and told him they were gonna draft him. And he gave them his blessing.
Saints fans the next 40 years: Who dat baby 🙂🔫
It was a big deal on draft night, so we've had time to get over it.
As a KC Chiefs fan......you guys are in good hands with Justin Herbert. Its gonna be a battle for years to come.
So Andy Reid and Sean Payton was the only 2 that saw the talent of Mahomes and that 9-10 teams passed on Mahomes including the draft experts.
There was some info at the time that came out that basically said the Chiefs started looking into Mahomes because info had leaked with how high the Saints were on him and they would be drafting him.
Top 2 coaches in the NFL hands down
@@xJ0LLYR0GERx damn did themselves dirty
@@xJ0LLYR0GERx I dont think that’s true. Brett Veach and the chiefs current GM (he wasn’t GM in 2017, John Dorsey was) was all over mahomes and showing Andy Reid clips of mahomes all year 2016-2017 season and thought he was the best player he has seen EVER.
Actually Matt Nagy was the one who identified Mahomes on the Chiefs.
Knew this story as a Saints fan for a year or so, but this coming back up today makes me so much more sad since our future is so unclear
For being a feel Good Friday Pat, really making me feel bad
As a Falcons fan THANK GODDDD the Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes
I knew Mahomes would be great watching his college highlights. I believe Sean Peyton did too
As a Saints I'm very disappointed this didn't happen lol.
Because they would've let Pat sit for 4 years. Suuuuure.
Pat Mahomes basically sat a year... nobody knew he was going to be this good.

Hey Pat! In New Orleans that story is LEGEND. We knew about those plans on draft day😄😄😄
Thank god we got Mahomes in KC
As Vikings fan I’m glad this didn’t happen because they deserve the next 20 years of bottom of the division
Yeah its been bad enough on the other side of the Favre-Rodgers transition so I hope the Saints go back into the basement where they came from.
As a falcons fan thank sweet baby jesus
Mahomes at wildcat...just WOW
If mahomes was a bust then Sean Payton would’ve never mentioned this lmao
I mean yea, I doubt all the teams who said they had interest in Peyton Manning wouldn’t have talked about it as much during his career had he been a bust...that’s usually how it goes
He said it before mahomes even started his first game that mahomes was their pick at 11. I rmbr ian rappaport even tweeted the saints wanted him.
There were rumblings of this on that draft day. Lot of analysts said the Saints were picking Mahomes if he was still there.
Saints have major leaks in the scoring department. It happens so often that teams will trade ahead of them
I thought Pace was tight with Payton and part of the reason we made him our GM was because of how helpful he was with the saints. 🐻 😪
John Dorsey gets zero credit for this, but trading up for Mahomes basically cost him his job: "We had a pretty good idea who was interested and who wasn't," Reid said in advance of his team's appearance in Super Bowl 54. "(John) Dorsey was in charge of the draft at that time and he maneuvered up to get him, knowing who was out there and who the threats were" - Andy Reid
I’m moving to New Orleans next month.. I wish this happened😂
Welcome to the cresent city.
Denver needed to win, the Chiefs had nothing to play for and started mostly 2nd team guys. Patrick went into Denver with the Chiefs second team and blew everyone away. There was talk in KC like, you need to play him in the playoffs over Alex. His downfield vision was off the charts.
Mahomes in his 1st start led the team down the field with game winning drive.
He was saying this on draft night at the time. This is pretty common knowledge for most Saints fans, this story broke in New Orleans local papers the day of the draft
, that the Saints settled on Lattimore after Chiefs leap frogged them and took Mahomes. Perhaps they should of been more aggressive, but Mahomes was considered by most a late 1st or early 2nd prospect at best, the Saints expected him to be available.
The Chiefs also knew the Saints were going to draft Mahomes, which is why they traded one spot ahead of them.
Brady probably never goes to the Bucs if this happens.
As a Falcons fan I would say I’m relieved of this but this draft is also when they got Lattimore. Saints with no Lattimore=Julio and Gabriel or Sanu (later on Ridley) combining for 400 yards and 5 TD’s
Hihi,nicetomeetyou
If Mahomes went to the Saints and sat behind Drew for 3 years, we potentially would not have seen Mahomes start until last week.
The Patriots favorite QB once said "Hindsight is 20/20"
Imagine Mahomes skill set and offense in a dome. Be like the Greatest Show on Turf part II
Thank god! - Falcons fan
Old news. He said all this a long time ago. This was brought up last year too. LOL
Sean Payton is lying. If he really thought Mahomes was the "best qb prospect ever" at the time, the Saints would have 100% moved up to get him.
his ego won't allow him to claim different. I hate that smug prick
Why would you move for a player that nobody else is high on? That’s just dumb.
As a saints fan....damn
As a falcons fan, I am thankful that Mahomes did not become a Saint
As a panthers fan I’m right there with you, that would’ve sucked for both of us for years to come lol
@@braxtonandrews4047 Exactly. Now I hope Mahomes can beat Brady and the Bucs on Sunday
@@Pokemonfan12498 for sure me too, them bucs are LOADED though
it's going to be tough with their tackles hurt and the tampa rushers feasting. This is the toughest super bowl in recent memory to pick IMO
As a saints fan, I feel so robbed but the chiefs made the perfect decision. gg
Technically Pat it wasn't Veach, it was Dorsey
As a Saints fan this really makes me sick Patrick Mahomes is my favorite player & you mean to tell me he could’ve been a Saint such horse you know what
All the people that try and say Mahomes is only good because of the weapons around him but if that was the case why did Andy Reid and Sean Payton who are QB experts say he was the best prospect they’ve ever seen? Go watch his college highlights he was making the same crazy plays and amazing throws to receivers who were nobody’s.
He’s the truth when I watched that comeback win his rookie year against DEN I said to a lot of my friends he is the truth & he was S L A N G I N G the rock making the best throws I’ve personally ever seen Peyton Manning Aaron Rodgers Patrick Mahomes are the best throwers to ever play
Its because youre misunderstanding the point. Nobody is pretending like mahomes would be BAD without the chiefs, but he would simply be a likely top 5 qb and wouldnt be on pace to be the “greatest qb of all time”
I’m a chiefs fan, I’m glad we drafted mahomes.
The real headline should read, the saints had an opportunity to draft Deshaun
Corner was a massive massive need for them though so Lattimore was a solid pick for them.
That's why the Chiefs knew to move to 10. They knew Saints (11) or Cardinals (13) would take him.
It’s hard to believe any coach/front office personnel that says they were going to draft Mahomes. Of course now they would say they were going to draft him
Payton has been saying this since before Mahomes was a starter. Its well known ⚜ were taking him, thats why Chiefs traded one pick ahead of them.
Nobody talks how Andy Reid was gonna draft Russell Wilson when he was back with the Eagles. If the Seahawks hadn't jumped up and taken him, instead we took Foles.
At least he learned his lesson.
I don’t buy it cuz if he was the best college qb they’ve ever “evaluated” why wouldn’t they move up from 12 😂
I'm a chiefs and saints so I would be happy with either team lom
As a Saints fan, I remember that SAME off-season the front office was throwing leaks/rumors left and right up to the date of the draft. Still salty we didn’t make the move because I’ve been off of Drew since 2018.
hes MVP year ubcwas off of him tf
Minutes away from being a Texan
I honestly hope that New Orleans trades up from the 28th spot to draft a QB this year. I know we have Winston, and Hill, but I don't know man. Maybe I need to see more of Winston to know if he's corrected the INT/Turnover problem, but his passing yards with TB was pretty damn incredible. Hill is our gadget man, but I just can't see him being our "franchise" QB. He's great for trick plays and even to toss in as a receiver, but as far as being in all the time, I just don't know. I doubt we get high enough in the draft(unless they pull a Mike Ditka ofc) to get ahold of Fields or Wilson, but if we could get someone like Mac Jones, Ian Book, or Kyle Trask I wouldn't be against it. I guess it's possible that Fields drops low, but not 28th pick low. If he did though..surely..just freaking surely Coach Payton would step in and grab him.
If the saints had Watson from the Texans they would be the favorites from here on out. Too bad there’s salary caps.
Brees made the franchise a winning one, there’s no way in hell you would of ever changed that. He deserves to go out on his own terms.
If Mahomes went anywhere other than the Chiefs I don’t think he’d be as great as he is now, sure he’d still be good but nothing close to what he his now. The Chiefs were perfect for him
He would’ve been really good on the saints.
Its often overlooked but, before the Chiefs traded up to 10, Buffalo was projected to select Mahomes at 10. They did not have Allen yet and their starter was Tyrod Taylor. I think sitting behind Smith and learning from Reid was essential, he would not be the same if the Bills or anyone else drafted him.
He threw for 700yds in a loss at Texas Tech....Bruh 🤯
He had to
Their defense was twice as bad than the 2018 chiefs defense
We could’ve had the future goat 😭😭😭
He is a Saint. He just plays for the Chiefs
As a Broncos fan this makes me want to buy a delorean to make this happen lol
As a saints fan, i do not care if we go 0-16 with drew next year. This is his team and his city. If drew brees ran for governor of Louisiana he would win by a landslide!
Sean Payton pulling an Arsene Wenger...
I'm from india where can I look the match I love Patrick mahomes
Saints fans feelin bad they couldn't get Mahomes, meanwhile us Bears fans are laughing in joker because we had the #2 pick and deliberately chose MVP Mitch
As a panthers fan, thank God
Sean Payton and the new orleans offense is another team that mahomes could replicate his kc production with and would have been another great fit. They may not have the deep threat in tyreek, but they got one of the most physical toughest recievers in the game in michael thomas, best O lines and if the saints still keep the rest if their draft slots consistent alvin kamara out of the backfield to throw and check down to.
It's no coincidence that the Chiefs traded up to 10, one spot in front of the Saints. They knew Payton liked Mahomes and was a threat to take him.
Niners passed on Watson and Mahomes because Kyle Shanahan was way too in love with Kirk Cousins (who the Niners planned on signing the next year in free agency)
How Pat talks about Payton is how all of Louisiana talks about Brees
As a saints fan I wish he was a saint
I cant thank john dorsey and brett veach and andy reid enought for drafting our qb
Let's be real... as far as KC is concerned he already is a Saint!
Name a better start to a career dude... He’s a legend already at 25. It’s insane
Garth Brooks is the greatest Athlete ever. Fight me!
It's easy for Peyton to say that now after the fact seeing Mahomes success.
Nah we would’ve drafted him Brees was getting old anyways
