Their mission is to help their students with college preparedness, readiness, access, and to support them throughout their college journey and beyond. They provide a sense of direction, necessary support, and guidance for their students to achieve their goals.

Destination College is a volunteer organization, we're a 501c3. We work with the student-athletes of the three high schools in Mount Vernon and we help them with their college preparedness, readiness, access, we help them get into college and we track and follow them and support them even through college. Our mission is to try to help our student-athletes find a college that's best suited to their academic, financial, and athletic needs. Destination College is more than an after school program, it's a program to help kids really reach their full potential, help give them a sense of direction, help give them the support and the push that they need. The entry to our program is through participation in a team, it's not through a GPA, it's not an application process. So we have students at the full range of academic performance and the goal for Destination College is persistence. We want them to get to their end goal, whatever that is. We have three overarching programs, it's a three-legged approach. Starting in 9th grade through 11th grade we work with the student-athletes in Team Reeds. We have close to 70 volunteers and each team has a group of dedicated volunteers who work with them. Mount Vernon is a financially challenged school district. It's a city of 77,000 people and 100% of the students who go to school here are on federal free lunch. It's challenging for kids who want the extra help with the tutoring or with the SAT prep. It's expensive so we're trying to level the playing field. They kind of help the students in the mornings with reading comprehension, trips to different organizations, different places like courthouses, movie trips, just things to kind of cultivate a culture of understanding, you know, there's life after high school, there's life after basketball and that's kind of how I kind of joined the program and I kind of took that and just tried to run with it honestly. I remember sitting in the SAT class, I got like a 690 on the SAT math and I remember looking at my SAT score and just knowing like Destination College did that. Sitting with the tutors and talking with Mrs. McKenna and she's like, hey, I think you can really do this, I think you can get straight A's, like just that positive reinforcement that's not coming from your parents, that's something that again, you want to take that and kind of run with it because you know, you don't want to let anybody down. The second leg of our programming is the CUNY College Center. In the CUNY College Center, we help the seniors work on their college essays, their applications, financial aid, resumes, scholarships, educational opportunity programs, and everything that's involved in the whole entire college process. And we do this over the entire school year until they put the deposits down May 1st. We are here to be able to make college affordable to the students and show them how it can be affordable. They were there from beginning to end. They helped my daughter with all scholarships and financial aid, and that helped tremendously because it's a whole process of applying for school, and I didn't know what that process was. I was the first one in my family to go through the college application process. Being a kid from Mount Vernon, you don't think that you can make it to an Ivy League school...
