Wilhelm is so impactful for how little screen time he has and all the cliches in his romance. But it's all in the execution and JUST enough trope breaking (doesn't want his girl to give up sword because she's a pretty girl BUT because she doesn't love being a swordsman). I also think a ton of the side characters are put in the spotlight because they are meant to be foils to Subaru, especially when it comes to love (in all it's manifestations). Also, we're waiting for S3! Plus you'll have 2 OVAs to watch before S2 too.

@kale7600 it does not add more context. The only thing Directors cut added was the end scene that is fully available in the beginning of S2, as well as uncensored some scenes. It didn't add additional context nor dialogue just some animation improvements and the scene that's at the beginning of S2
Some context that might help in the next episodes. This was explicit in the novels but was made more subtle in the anime The reason Julius fought Subaru and beated him to a pulp was to save his life. Subaru had insulted the knights publicly, and some of them were planning on killing him. Like grab him in an alleyway and cutting his throat. As a result of the public shamming, Subaru was deemed not worth it. And Julius was seen as going too hard on him and hurt his own image. As of right bow he is being punished and isn't allowed to work as a knight (temporarily)
The first half was fairly surmisable for a non-LN reader just from Reinhard and Felix's context clues. The 2nd half with Julius acting as Juli the Mercenary I thought was just him being quirky. So nice to know there's an actual reason for it.

Important cut content from this episode: Subaru confessed his love to Rem after the battle. He loves Rem as much as Emilia, so much so he even confessed to her twice.
I will add context that Subaru had tried to avoid admitting it because he felt like an indecisive douchebag. Rem managed to get it out of him by pretending to be hurt after the battle, and convinced him to try and talk with Emilia and try to see if things can work out for the three.
I also like to add that was also forced out of him and their voices sounded like joking. And ever since. He only talks about 1 girl he likes and 1 girl that likes him. And even if he did love rem the same way. The author is a fan of true love and not love triangles. So subaru will only get with emilia. Also, if that was important for the story, the author would have asked it into the anime. Its clearly not important enough.

Wilhelm and Theresia Van Astrea's flashback is my favorite thing in this anime, everything is perfect in it, the emotional moments, the music, the romance, everything is freaking perfect in that flashback. That flashback in the English dubs is equally as good too, The English voice actors did an amazing job in that flashback and I'm someone who dislikes English dubs but I have to praise it this time.
Everyone still focuses on Subaru when the story is more than he is, it's sort of amazing really how well the story is written when people fall into this trap of only focusing on what Subaru is focusing on because we're with him. But it's far more than that.
on GOD, people need to stop just appreciating subaru's story and appreciate the story of re zero itself. it's rare to see a story with so SO MANY characters written just as well as the main character, who himself already has phenomenal writing. there's so much going on in re zero's world and subaru is just a tiny fraction of it.
@Senpafon why? The outcome is the same except it makes for a worse viewing experience since it repeats the scene and also doesn't give the same experience as watching S1 when it was thought to be the whole packet
Despite how good the side characters are, Subaru is easily the best character in the show, and even more once you've read the novels and took a peek into his thought process, felt his terror, agony, anger and desperation. And also his love, strong enough to overshadow the Hell he's walking through. The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world.
Honestly even just based off Anime I think Crusch wpuld be my last pick because her plan is actively to cut of the pact with the Dragon. The same Dragon that they said helped seal Satella the Witch of Envy and is one of the biggest defences of the Kingdom
The thing is, other parts DO raise suspicions about the dragons and heroes of lugunica and Crusch's story is decently sympathetic. But I still feel like her way of reaching that goal was so shallow. And it makes sense, because in ex 1 while we know who she's doing this over, she really didn't grow to recognise her actual desires and have the authentic relationships they deserved before what happens. Her growth is stunted and I hope we'll finally see her fully open into a great person herself in later arcs. I can imagine a "that's not what I wanted!" sort of moment with her same as Subaru if something bad actually IS revealed about the dragon, because she'll finally confront that this ambition of hers really isn't including the effects on every other person(at least outside of nobility imo she's biased in a very classist way). I expect her to become more interesting.
