I am pretty sure Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben was the Prussian guy at Valley Forge who trained the continentals. Marquis de Layfayette was a French noble (who also helped out).
Correct on both counts. Von Steuben was the Prussian hardass who turned the Continental army into a British nightmare, and Lafayette was the French noble who the French court sent over to help kick British ass.
Short version: Von Steuben = drilling.
Lafayette = morale boost in Valley Forge (because that camp was _absolute shite_ in the winter).

As a formerly fat American, I can assure you this trend had only started over the last 30 to 40 years.
