Love the show. I’m a 79 year old Scot living in Canada and have been a fan of motor sports all my life. My uncle was a Rolls Royce aero engineer who started life as an apprentice motor mechanic, was drafted to build Merlins during the war, and never left. Needless to say he was a huge motor-head and always bought obscure cars which never really ran properly but were intriguing The discussion about starting old cars brought back memories of my youth in Glasgow where no one ever had a decent car and there was one guy in our group who could start anything. The deft manipulation of choke, gas and obscenities muttered in a particular cadence were guaranteed to eventually triumph (no pun intended)
History story: My old lorry used to transport a pre-war GP Alfa to hillclimb meets and so on post-WW2, when everything was still very "make do & mend" etc. One evening while returning home to the south coast from Prescott, they went off the road and became intimate with a large tree, to the extent that the front axle was badly bent. So they removed the axle at the side of the road, hoiked it to the nearby village where they got the local blacksmith out of bed. He straightened the axle, they dragged it back to the forlorn lorry, re-fitted the axle as best they could, and limped back home. Fortunately the car in the back didn't unduly suffer during this episode. The Alfa sold for quite a few £m at a Bonhams sale 10yrs back. Lots of stories like this I uncovered from the two team mechs that drove the old lorry in the late 40s, early 50s. Sadly they're not around any more but I'm so glad I tracked them down, this in the 1990s. An old gent came over to me when we put it on display at Race Retro (2011?), he pointed at it and began reminiscing about catching a lift in it to London in the 1950s. But yes, the back story of these old vehicles is very rewarding to dig up.
This is such an event. The calibre of the co-hosts is just top notch. I'd like to say "hello" 👋 to Manish. A fellow Doctor, I thought I was a petrolhead, but you sir are my new hero! The stories and anecdotes are incredible, please keep this going!
For 2023, this is quite a rambling and low production quality podcast but with every episode I love it more and more. I’ll watch every one you blokes make.
I love the banter between you all, but Neil’s expression when he gets interrupted by Chris (again 😂) is priceless This podcast makes me chuckle so often, keep it going
Car research topic - latest addition to the addiction is a 1973 MGBGT in teal (good topic -favourite car colours) Had to buy it when I found out that the car was supplied new locally, owned by two people from new who both lived within a few hundred yards of the supplying garage before I bought it and had only covered 34k miles. That and the orange cloth interior sold it!
Fascinated to hear that you have the ex Chris Meek 512 BB, Neil. I remember seeing this car many times in the paddock at Snetterton in the 70's including when it was still very new. I still have a photo of the car somewhere. Huge character, always dripping in gold and beautiful women, and regularly in the Snetterton Bar with Lanfranchi, Marshal and 'Whizzo' Williams Ironically his reg number was 175 MPH, and the BB wore that number in my photo!! Probably befitting the car given the discussion around wild top speed claims by Maranello😎
i have the first ever series 5 morgan 4/4 It was delivered to a lady who was english but was moving to Australia to for work. From what we can work out this was the only car they had available so it is what she was sent. it was raced and passed through many hands until i found it in a front yard after 27 years. Now it is my toy.
I just read that Goodwin story in EVO. I think the driver got in the back first and as the passenger was getting in the back he clicked off the cruise control and it started to lose speed. "Cabin was a flurry of activity to stop 250K pounds going for a burton" I think were his words LOL
Another brilliant podcast! Talking music, one track I could not get out of my head was featured on the Type7 video 'Shakedown'. Its called 'Velvet Sky of Dreams' by Tiga & Hudson Mohawke
I got a Smart Roadster Coupe for the weekend to replace my RR Classic on oldtimer plates just because I wanted something enjoyable to drive but that did not cost me a few hundred euros every time I get in it because something needs fixing. I also needed a small engine for the road tax here. It was also something I've been wanting to get as a first car, and second. But I couldn't afford it at the time. When I researched the car I learned that the previous owner was actually crushed to death in a machine at work that went wrong, where he got in to fix it, and an temp employee started it while he was still in it. I read the 10th of this month the court is ruling its verdict. He actually was a massive Smart fan and head of the enthousiasts club in Belgium of something like that. So his sister found his collection, had it auctioned off and I got one of them. It also turned out he was gay, like me. So I've been trying to enjoy the car for the two of us while keeping it in top shape. Truly enjoyed the chat as always.
I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that people are starting to leave the Ferrari F1 team. They need some new blood and new ideas, because they seem to have reached a point where they think if they keep on doing the same thing over and over the outcome will somehow be different. Hopefully Vasseur joining will shake things up sufficiently and I reckon if a bunch of people leave it may have short term impact but in the long term they will benefit from it. I recall Binotto saying last year, despite horrendous cockups in strategy on numerous occasions, that they did not need to change anything. I found that astounding and at the time I said that was likely the beginning of the end for him, so I wasn't surprised when his time was finally up.
Listening to this in my 1993 Mini and I have just pulled the choke out of the dashboard just as Neil was explaining that this could happen. Couldn’t have asked for better timing
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bump up the Audio Gain - It's far too quiet! The content is Incredible, I love it so much, you guys are fandabidosey ! But you have to pump it up!
Future subject suggestion: steering wheels. 60s/70s/80s and Modern (?). BTW. I could watch one of these episodes every week, like waiting for the Beano to arrive as an 8 year old in the 50s. Thanks guys, it’s worth staying alive when you are making these. David
Fantastic show again:) Challenge for your 2 car garage - budget £450pm for both cars - 1 from the 90's and 1 from 2010 - both suitable for family life but either one you would take out on a Sunday, after spending all morning washing and polishing it, for a blast around Elan valley
Loving the eclectic musical collection that is slowly growing every week on Spotify! If one of you wonderful chaps could recommend ‘Something Else’, as sung by Sid Vicious of The Sex Pistols, from the ‘Great Rock n Roll Swindle ‘ album, I would be forever a happy chappie… ( my top tune while driving my F Type with the roof down )
You all missed a beat on the 4 seat sportscar going 911. The answer is Lexus LC500 (coupe or convertible). Gorgeous styling, incredible interior and build quality, and one of the finest V8 engines, and probably the last NA one youll find in a new car
As a Ford Mustang owner (2020, V8 Manual), there are zero other cars for the money that are as a cool and as fun. 2 small seats in the back, my 8 year old fits fine. Yes, it's not perfect, but its sub 50K, sounds unreal and is capable of shredding tyres. Plus, as a car nerd, the clubs and comradery is up there with the best.
This comes from someone who was born in '06. 2000's trance and indie rock is the best. Ever. The day-roygan chy(only available on yt), sandstorm by darude are my favorite trance mixes and for indie rock, gotta give it to 9 volter-colour of fire and back again-boy kill boy
Speaking of cars doing speeds they can't do.. In Aus there was a Datsun 120Y done for speeding by a speed camera doing 150+ kph back in 2003. They fought the ticket and tested the car and found that it could only do 117, the kicker is the speed camera was still being used for months. The sad thing about Harry's Zonda hearing the story about the smoke coming off the back bodywork from the tyre is the person that bought it converted it to left hand drive...
Great work chaps. Great 2 car garage (as usual), particularly Manish's choice of the Maserati khamsin. Also, on the driving tunage, what about This is the Day or Perfect Smile by The The? Cheers
Question for the panel for the next one : What noise comes into your head or do you make out aloud when you see a certain car? For example, for me the Morris Minor is 'boooooorrr' as that's the noise it makes every gear change lol.. Plenty in Yorkshire and I have to do the noise every time I see one
Brilliant guys… First time I’ve watched… Oh my god… here’s 5 guys on social media that I can identify with…. One potential suggestion - what about choosing a decent pub somewhere in the country, get around a table, order the first 5 pints and then switch the cameras on… Then for each podcast, choose a different pub somewhere else, and repeat…. And repeat…
Bang on with the first choices for a 2 car garage. The Taycan for the electric car (which is the best looking EV out there) and then a 992 911 for the Sports car. Porsche have it wrapped up.
Loving this series and a big fan of the driving tunes. I’ve had my mk7 golf Clubsport for a few years. It came onto my radar after Sabine went Supercar hunting in the Clubsport S. When I got the car I saw there was a build number (650) and I was interested in how many were left and how many were built. So a google searc found me a website that told me there was only little more than 530 built of the uk’s 1000 build allocation. I was confused. How was mine 650. So an after some hunting for info and some emails it turns out that VWUK decided they would put these build plates in the cars. So they got these plates made and put random ones into boxes and posted off to dealers. So that when. Car is delivered to a dealership they would just grab a plate and stick it on the car. Which is weird because dealers still say the cars are XXX/1000 when there’s little over half of that brought into the uk. 😂😂😂😂
If you want a dance music track to drive to, try ‘Escape Velocity’ by The Chemical Brothers. It’s long enough to cover the whole trip to the shop, or to pick up the kids, and you’ll feel like you did the whole journey in warp speed.
All well and good, but thanks to Dr Pandey, I now have impure thoughts and visions whenever a current BMW comes towards me. Sorry, I mean approaches. Manish, how do you see VW Beetle bonnets? Asking for a friend.
I do currently own a car purchased new in 1933 by the owner of The Golden Fleece Hotel on the A1 in Thirsk (still in existence a 600 year old coaching in which had stables for 60 horses pre motor transport) a Mrs Ellen Lee.

Love this PodCast :). Please please please ask Chris Cooper to buy another microphone - he sounds so incredibly muffled and I really want to hear what he says. Oh and if Manish could actually turn the lights on so we can see him that would be awesome. Love you guys and love the banter
48:26 Car history Story I bought a 997 911 which was purchased from new by Richard Bacon who described this “an awful decision” Which my partner echoes every-time it requires preventative maintenance.
£120k new Sports car....how about a MST full group 4 Escort (mark 1 or 2). Performance and top speed which is usable in the UK, and the children can swing from the roll cage in the back (like baby Orangutans).
If you had an eye on John Elkann you’re not surprised how bad Ferrari is run. He (with Marchionne) just ran Fiat/Lancia/Alfa (w exeption of Giulia) down in the ground the last 20years. He’s NOT a car guy, Lapo might be but not John and he’s the brother w the power.
Re F1 team figureheads and leadership. I think it's hopelessly optimistic to expect a kid (F1 driver) who's had anything but a balanced childhood to be able to lead a team. That's what Team Principals are for, or maybe a consultant like Lauda.
Okay lads it's time to ratchet up the 'what two cars' Questions. It's 1976 you've just been made a junior partner and you're looking to upgrade two cars one for you and one for the wife. The wife's has to have back seats for the 10 and 8 years old. you've got £21K (1976 prices). Are you up for the challenge?
Company Electric w/250 mile range: VW ID Buzz AWD. Reason: SoCal is already lousy with pretentious, mute-colored tycans. A 40+year-old theoretical executive is quietly dying inside. To survive, he nees to loosen up and let his freak-flag-fly. Mommy-sports 2+2: Chevy Camaro SS convertible. With $50-60k left over, build the kids an awesome tree house complete with golden retriever puppy. Reason: Kids will soon outgrow 911 back seats, and 911s are common as dirt here. Theoretical wife calls them “Newport mini-vans”. Seriously, what pair of 10-year olds would choose a 911 over a sporty, growling, bright orange V8 convertible, mega-tree house, and a golden retriever to tow their skateboards around the neighborhood? I mean, the Camaro’s interior was even STYLED by a 10 year old . . . We are . . . a theoretical American family.😋
Did you guys really think people would care about vague questions about EV selection? And no, as usual because all info given to us relating to EVs is always fraudulent: even if you would have 251 miles flash on the range estimator or official specs, it won't actually do anywhere near that...even at normal temperatures. Then at cold temperatures or when doing proper long-distance motorway driving you'll be lucky to do more than half that. That is the reality.
Do you know that I grin like a Cheshire Cat every time a new episode pops up.
Me too, best part of Friday mornings

What content, fantastic, ratarossa looking at Neil’s BB as motivation. What a story with Neil’s machine absolute magic
Another brilliant podcast! Talking music, one track I could not get out of my head was featured on the Type7 video 'Shakedown'. Its called 'Velvet Sky of Dreams' by Tiga & Hudson Mohawke
A suggestion for driving songs - The Shamen "Move any Mountain". Old as it is, put it on, turn the volume up and....
If you stop doing these, I'm gonna have serious withdrawals
Remember pulling the choke to get some extra speed when you were going flat out 😂😂😂 ah yes...... Love the podcasts boys great work..
Absolutely love this stuff and format.. Can we have some more mic volume please to cater(ham) for the older listeners 😆

So I wonder will we ever get to see the film Manish made of Rossi & Hamilton ??.
Sleeper is a great movie
I remember the scene with the VW , brilliant !
Daryl Hall & John Oates 'She's Gone' def a winner on those sunny days

Ratarossa is restoring a white BB512. One of my all time favourites. I preferred the Ferrari to the Countach.
Great work chaps. Great 2 car garage (as usual), particularly Manish's choice of the Maserati khamsin. Also, on the driving tunage, what about This is the Day or Perfect Smile by The The? Cheers
This is top shelf!

For example, for me the Morris Minor is 'boooooorrr' as that's the noise it makes every gear change lol.. Plenty in Yorkshire and I have to do the noise every time I see one
Fisker Karma...look amazing, however 10mile shy of the 250minimum range

I wanna come back to listen to this for the millionth time.
And I want couple of cars in my man cave while I do so.
Very much enjoying these podcasts, however the worst part is not being able to chime in and be in the conversation!
Adrian Newey down massive offers from Ferrari. Could have been the greatest Ferrari era of all time.
Alternative to the porsche for the 2 car garage....lexus ls500? The taycan does the sports car job.
If you want a dance music track to drive to, try ‘Escape Velocity’ by The Chemical Brothers. It’s long enough to cover the whole trip to the shop, or to pick up the kids, and you’ll feel like you did the whole journey in warp speed.
30:50 futurama did that joke as well, a few hundred years old air cooled VW, starts on the first turn.
Where can I get the cap Neil is wearing??
Cannot disagree more with Neil on Manzoni’s design at Ferrari.
He brought the heritage into the future, looking at the past without being nostalgic like lazy designers often do.
He has evolved the brand image into the future with brave designs, some less fortunate like the 812, but some are just peak form like the Roma and the 296.
The Roma is just pure beauty.
The Monza SP1 and SP2.
The Daytona.
The Purosangue, as controversial as it is, it’s a beautiful sculptural approach to the SUV, like no other on the market.
It just feels like a design from 2050, the headlight-missing front trick is genius, it totally changes the look of the car, and they are the first to do it in production.
It’s astonishing how far ahead of other OEMs they’ve got as far as experimenting.
But the special projects are what sets Ferrari Design apart from all the super car oems, the whole SP series is a master class in one off design.
McLaren could only imagine and dream to have such design capability and bravery when designing cars, in fact they design the same car every two years, just scaled up or down a bit.
No wonder they are bankrupt, there’s zero excitement in a McLaren design (while they are superlative to drive).
There’s a personal taste factor of course, if you don’t like it it’s not for you, and that’s ok.
But to say he “ruined” Ferrari Design, that’s highly debatable, especially when Ferrari and Manzoni are unanimously praised by the design community, winning awards on awards judged by world leading design masters.
As usual another outstanding episode. However, I feel short changed, at only 48 minutes.....
best car thats from the 90s that you can buy for £1500 max, nothing older than 89.. GO!
Love this PodCast :). Please please please ask Chris Cooper to buy another microphone - he sounds so incredibly muffled and I really want to hear what he says. Oh and if Manish could actually turn the lights on so we can see him that would be awesome. Love you guys and love the banter

I bought a 997 911 which was purchased from new by Richard Bacon who described this “an awful decision” Which my partner echoes every-time it requires preventative maintenance.
What about Gear Nobs as a name? 😂
Alice in chains - nutshell should be on the playlist.
why not a Panamera Sport Turismo instead of a Tycan?
We know Edward Lovett is the proprietor of the website and related to Dick Lovett Sportscars in the Swindon area - but who are the others ?
There is a small visible dent in the underside of my 911 frunk because apparently a bottle of Laphroaig doesnt fit under there standing up.
Audi E-Tron GT is forgotten?
I finally realised who ChaussureCowboy is.
Any chance Manish can run the NHS? Such a good bloke
I haven't been reading the comments so sorry if this is a double up for possible names, how about Carholics Council (or Councillors)
£120k new Sports car....how about a MST full group 4 Escort (mark 1 or 2). Performance and top speed which is usable in the UK, and the children can swing from the roll cage in the back (like baby Orangutans).

I allways think a m5 comp with alot of money left over to play around with power, suspension etc… to get it similar to a cs
A cs is not worth 50k more
The new name of the podcast should be Collecting Dust.... seems like some classic British self deprecating humor... haha
Re F1 team figureheads and leadership. I think it's hopelessly optimistic to expect a kid (F1 driver) who's had anything but a balanced childhood to be able to lead a team. That's what Team Principals are for, or maybe a consultant like Lauda.
Top fuel tank bearding
Okay lads it's time to ratchet up the 'what two cars' Questions. It's 1976 you've just been made a junior partner and you're looking to upgrade two cars one for you and one for the wife. The wife's has to have back seats for the 10 and 8 years old. you've got £21K (1976 prices). Are you up for the challenge?
Can you please buy a bunch of good microphones?
Please improve the sound quality … the content is wonderful but too soft.
Neil Clifford is Shmee150 in 35 years time.
Shmee is a plonker
Except he made his own money at Kurt Geiger and has pretty good taste (he has a 205 t16) now that's good taste
Tangled up in C-Tech chargers…
They are worlds apart. Neil has true passion and doesn't care what others think...
how dare you haha
A Taycan sounds laughable! 200 mile range on bad day. For all the hate they get, buy a long range Tesla and get over yourself 👍🏻
LOL
