The CONTROVERSIAL Origins of Bayon Temple, Angkor Thom, Cambodia | Ancient Architects

  • Often falling in the shadow of the fabulous Angkor Wat, the Bayon temple of the neighbouring Angkor Thom, Cambodia is a breathtaking, richly-decorated Khmer Buddhist Temple built in the late 12th or early 13th century AD.
It was the state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist king Jayavarman VII, situated in the centre of his capital Angkor Thom. Now, there is controversy about the origins of this temple, recently discussed by Praveen Mohan on his very successful channel. Watch his video here: • 𝐖𝐇𝐘 𝐍𝐎 𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐒 𝐀 𝐃𝐎𝐂...
He calls it the forbidden documentary and gives his reason why no documentaries exist on this specific Cambodian Temple, even though there are dozens on the subject on RUclips.
He states that the true history of Bayon is that this was originally a Hindu Temple, transformed into a Buddhist, a true history that is denied by authorities.
Is this correct? Is there a conspiracy? Watch this video to learn more about the true origins and the ancient architecture of Bayon Temple and Angkor Thom in Cambodia.

I have visited Siem Reap twice and I believe these temples are definitely Hindu. The Khmer also built the Sukhothai Temples and I live in Sukhothai. The Khmer used slave labour and it is recorded were very cruel. Eventually the Siamese rose up and conquered the Khmer and set about to destroy the Khmer Empire. By this time the Siamese had adopted Buddhist teachings. What you called a snake is a Nagar. From Nakar and the word root is nak as in snake. Trace it back to Ancient Persia.
I found Praveen’s observations fascinating, his ability to recognise Hindu from Buddhist design most valuable, and while I agree Ancient Civilisations made incredible achievements, using science and technology, some of which is outside our current knowledge, I still believe these things were achieved by humans.
Praveen’s constant challenge to our perception of the past stimulates interest and provokes serious thought. He makes us realise just how great the achievements of the past were. I would argue that Indian Princes played a major role from Burma/Myanmar to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaya, Indonesia and the Philippines than is explained in our history books.
There is much disagreement about the history of the area and the modern governments do not want to resurrect old differences. South East Asia wants peace and the good life, not conflict over old wars. The region is now predominantly Buddhist. 🙏

It's not conflicting if it's both a Hindu and a Buddhist temple at the same time, seeing as The Buddha was born a Hindu, and his philosophy was in fact just a very refined element of Hindu philosophy. The flowers and fruits of Buddhism stem from the roots of Hinduism.

I have been there and had some researching and exchange some words with researchers and you can see clearly the differences between the Buddhist ruins and the old structures that are much much older ... You also can watch how the Buddhist constructions differ in style and technique and. Also most of them are falling apart while the oldest builds are in better conditions . The researchers Set a date for the Buddhist ruins but not yet for the pre Buddhist constructions.. There is also a old story about the son of the king becoming Buddhist and years after making new constructions but I dare to say that these ruins are far older . Another interesting topic is the two Dinosaur carves in the wall that cause so many discussions and the similarities with one Indonesian pyramids that is estimated around 28000 years ....

Another thought-provoking video from Matt of Ancient Architects. What has been noted appears to be another instance of religious nationalism, aiming to rewrite history for self-aggrandizement and ritual one-upmanship. This seems to be an eternal problem at it happened in ancient Egypt and Persia, thereafter seen in various places down to the present. What this archaeology reveals is that one of humanity's greatest faults has very deep roots. Both the Buddhist and Hindu art and architectural work are magnificent. That magnificence is spoiled by the less than magnificent, indeed quite shameful, chauvinism. This must be made known, because Santayana was right in saying, as others have as well, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Matthew - Why you are falling for this theory of it being originally Buddhist instead of Hindu is surprising, and your reasons for it are incredibly shallow. Of course the local authorities are going to claim it as Buddhist, it's their tradition! But, because of the smile? The destroyed Buddha? and the continuous construction? Very weak. Did you not watch Praveen's video on Angkor Wat and other temples, and how many other Hindu temples were converted to Buddhist? And how many more were converted to Muslim mosques! It's striking! Besides, Buddha was born a Hindu and never considered an apostate, but subsequent Buddhist leaders wanted to separate themselves from the lowly Hindu origin, and they often did it violently. It's the followers , the true believers, who do the most damage to history.

From what I remember Buddha’s mother was returning from a visit with a large elephant caravan when she went into labor. That would explain the one depiction. Also to reach total enlightenment Buddha fought with a demon in the form of a snake. He had been fasting and meditating for a long period and had covered himself with ashes as the esthetics of his day did. That would explain another frieze. I don’t know the history of the king who built this temple, but if he was a devout Buddhist it would explain a lot.

The bust at 10.6 is very interesting. The head could easily be based on a cast. The smile is suggested only by the upper lip which looks stuck on like the eyebrows. The rest of the face is passive as it would be during a cast and in anatomical proportion although it is a bit modified. The weird upper lip overlaps the nasolabial folds. The folds should be displaced and deepen as the mouth corners widen and raise with the cheeks. That would be a lot of re-sculpting and a pig to get right- I've done it! I suspect sculptors have used casts a lot for reference in antiquity and we should expect to find this short cut wherever gypsum was available. Or maybe enlightenment does that weird thing with your upper lip?

The real mystery or "controversy" is that if you examine the locations of all the structures (Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, etc.) using archeoastronomy they mirror the positions of the stars of the constellation Draco or (The Naga). As well, how the constellation looked approximately 12,500 years ago. Those sites may have been "built" by some 12th century king but on a much older foundation.

what controversy? Cambodia, Bali and maybe, even Thailand have a mixture of Hindu and Buddhist influences. The kings may have patronized both, just like in early first millinium India. Gradually, over time, Buddhism stayed on as the religion of the masses, and as a state religion, in the far east

Squaring the circle is the basic formula for Ascension. Why? Though the 360⁰ infinite circle is 360⁰ there is nothing to establish coordinates from, or points in which to define its center. Where the square being 90° corners times 4 equals 360°, has the points to gain measure to define its center. So in the finite (square), the infinite (circle) defines its center. The center of all things is GOD (all). In us!

When not able to outshine the complexity and grandeur of other monuments, architects usually turn to complex symbolism and deep metaphysical and mathematical truths. Also, in some cases maps of their contemporary world and thus location of important places can be incorporated as such.

Please examine the foundations. The foundation is built first. Everything is based and built on the foundation. Note the overall foundation position, design and shape. Next note the lowest and deepest structures upon which other structures are built to determine the true origins and dates. Many structures may be built, changed, destroyed, or rebuilt upon the foundations.

See 06:45. Note the foundations align with the cardinal points of the compass. Note the symmetries and especially the asymmetries. Note the position, design and shape of the overall temple complex and of the “central sanctuary”. Both open to the rising sun in the east. Both designed as asymmetrical yonis, with lingams; the outer large, with sharp edges; the inner smaller, and more rounded. Both balanced with symmetry and asymmetries.

Matt, if you are now going to switch your attention from the Nile Valley peoples to those of India and surrounding areas, then I suggest that you read an author such as Sanjoy Chakravorty to gain an outline of the religious concoction of the many religions and beliefs that we have come to call Hinduism today. His book, "The truth about us," is a good read for the uninitiated, and an appreciation of his work can ask those who view India and its multifaceted legacies from a westernised hierarchical and now status quo infrastructure, what human values their understandings actually aspire to .

Im on Kauai Hawaii and I think the same style temples were here too but we're all destroyed in 1819. There are countless thousands of multi ton boulders with the same blackness of age and the same size just laying around. The temples here were destroyed in 1819 by orders given by Kamahumana. I can provide evidence of the ruins if anyone is interested.

i am a massive fan of this channel but i dont think you can mak a definate conclusion that this was original budhist temple purely based on the factors that you concluded with, ie the history of hindu and budhist rulers, theres a great amount of history that we dont know about the area and alot of mystery surrounding the greater site. also it sounds like just speculation when you say the crouded archectural features, you haven't gone very deep or presented any science liek you usually do, i do agree with you about the over exageration of the conspiracy however most of his videos have a slight aspect of this and you also use the same deceptive/provocative marketing tactics with your titles, but you do make some valid points that definately need more research discussion and documentation to provide better insight

It is to be reinvestigated by unbiased archaeologists and historians. Some say that Buddhists don't worship four heads God, but believe they worship, u can see in their 1000 years old monasteries. If one claims it to be a Hindu temple or Buddhist, need to have archaeological evidences not stories.

The thing is either way we do not know factually and history and archaeology always goes with the most obvious, the most obvious may seem factual and rather blatant yet there is wealth of so much more to always consider. To look deeply and deeper into history of Sri Lanka and southern India and anthropology and we may get more answers. Im tending to sway more towards Mohan on this subject as there is a lot more to bare in mind rather than the obvious and religious and political and tourist interested theory. It's still a mystery which is where the beauty of interest lays for me..... Never come to full drawn conclusions on history people, your ruin the future 👍
