  • This video is about 10 years too late, but I figured it might be helpful for those still interested in Micro-Four-Thirds cameras. Today, I am filming in Cinema 4K on my Panasonic GH5 (10bit) outdoors with no color correction applied. I am shooting in Cine-V
    In this video, I test out the Autofocus performance, background blur (bokeh), and which lens is best for different situations. I also throw in a vlogging test.

      @@GeekyNerdyTechy I ended up getting the 25mm 1.8f 7artisans lens. Fully manual only lens but it's doing great for most of my shoots. Only have a GH3 I don't tend to lean on the auto focus anyway :)
      A 12mm would be great though as the 25mm comes out at 50mm with Mft so I find that quite restrictive.

      I have a feeling the market has shifted too much. A lot of those pre-release S5 reviews kept pushing the term "the new full frame GH5". It sounded to me like Panasonic was encouraging that narrative (possibly). I hope I'm wrong. I dig the MFT. :-)

Bring it on; the MFT system is still a winner for those who know how to get the best from their cameras and lenses. The one area box is a great tip and works well. It's never too late to share practical information about these great products and their use.

    Thanks for the video. Can you plz help as i got my new 25mm f1.7 lens and it just cant do simple straightforward manual focus pulls. I attached a focus level on the lens ring for accuracy during testing. 12pm position to 3pm position is a quarter turn right. SO its easier to repeat with the lever that too. Heres the problem in a nutshell. The quarter turn does different focus pull for each time i repeat the quarter turn from 12-3pm. Completely off, its focusing somewhere far away once and the next turn somewhere closer. Example 12pm its on my wall painting and 3pm is on my pen stand. Repeat from 12pm-3pm. And the pen stand is now not in focus, in fact completely blurred. return to 12pm position and the wall painting is completely blurred. Found that its jumpy and will do different focus ramps for the same amount of turn depending on the speed with which your turning the wheel. WTF, is this a sane lens they designed ??????
    PS: LCD one touch focus, quick auto-focus by tapping screen etc works, snap movie focus works at least 80% of the time. Full Manual focus ring turn, zero working. Tracking focus, zero working.

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  3 года назад +1

      This lens is very inexpensive compared with more pro-level lenses. The focus by wire won't give you the same reliable results as the alternative type of lenses. I usually don't do massive focus pulls with this lens while filming but it works fine for subtle changes with product or close up video shots.

    Your video may be 10 years too late, but my comment is even later than that! I recently got a 14-42mm with a used camera I bought and didn't really think much about using it. I was going to use the 12-32mm pancake lens on that camera for street photography. Then I noticed that when the 14-42mm was at its shortest length (it trombones a bit in both directions) it was right at 25mm! So, turn it on, take off the lens cap and *BANG* you're all set up with a "nifty fifty" for a quick shot. I'm going to give this lens a try on a walkabout.

I'm on a tight budget. :P What lens would you recommend? Looking to spend no more than $300. I was looking at potentially buying a used 42.5mm f1.7 or 15mm 1.7. I currently own a 25mm f1.7, fwiw. I like it, but feel like I'd like to expand. Any help is appreciated!

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  3 года назад +2

      the 42.5 is way too zoomed in as you would need to stand bak a mile. The 15mm is great for close up work but it's far wider than the 25. I really like the 25mm for product shots. Maybe see if the 20mm is a good choice? The 45 will give you great background blur but you'll be standing twice as far almost away from the subject as you will with the 25mm. If that's what you are going for then see what you think.

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  3 года назад

      The kit lens does not let in much light compared with the 25mm f/1.7. The easiest way for you is to be in video mode "A" = Aperture priority mode and make sure you're at either 3.5 if zoomed all of the way out (wide) or if you are zoomed all of the way in it should be set to 5.6 and then walk way back from your subject. I cover this in the video but that lens is not fast. You want to get a 1.4 or 1.7 prime lens to get the best background blur (as seen in the video)

    I'm definitely leaving the the M43 system, will switch to either Fuji or Sony this year. The Leica 15mm is totally useless unless you are going to use it inside in lower light, note I'm not saying low light when taking about M43. If you are into landscape and you have only the 15 mm or the kit lens at 14mm, and it's sunny, there is absolutely no advantage to use that 15mm. By the way, decent landscape photography is never blurred, so the wider aperture of the 15 mm is totally useless when outside in sunny weather. As far as the 25mm, it's just a waste. I guess, you might find it marginally useful if you need a lens to shoot inside, but 50 mm, which is the field of view of that lens is a pain and too tight. Again, outside, in sunny bright weather the 25 offers absolutely no advantage compared to the 14-42, which by the way the statilization can actually let you open much more than what you'd think. I do share your view, the M43 is dying, not so much because it's small, but after renting the A73 and the Fuji Xt3 I now realize how awful the dynamic range of those M43 cams are. Dynamic range and color science is what matters more to me and Fuji totally destroy Panasonic or Olympus.

      What m43 camera are you comparing those to?
      Em1 iii is what you should probably compare them with and i think it does well. Colour science is very good on that particular camera.
      25mm 1.7 is a good lens. Not one i need often as i'm a landscape and wildlife man but there are plenty of times it comes in handy. Fast moving objects for one. No its not really a landscape lens.
