I am starting out in this new hobby of photography and I have to say that this is about one of the best channels on youtube that I have come across this far on the ins and outs of photography. Thank you kind Sir for sharing all your knowledge. God bless. You have another subscriber :)
Finally a thorough and pedagogical explanation of how the histogram works. Thanks! A very good series of films overall and I would love to see one the subject of composition if you haven't made one already.
A video on ETTR would be great and please keep on giving us assignments or challenges... it really helps to give me ideas on what to take photos of or what technique to use
Thanks attilio great videos yes ettr great idea I've learned more over the past few months watching your videos than the last year trying to read and understand various magazines. Graham
Please, is there an episode that shows the possibility of moving the exposure in Photoshop or Leitrum as shown in the histogram...... thank you very much
I wish you had posted this a week ago, I have photographed sunsets the past two evenings that were spectacular and I did not expose to the right, because like a fool I was afraid of not being able to recover the colors in the sky. Now that it is to be cloudy for the next several days I will have to wait to try your suggest out.
Hi Attilio. This is a great video - thank you. I think the conversation about ETTR is very important, especially for people shooting on something smaller than a full-frame sensor, where it seems like an almost constant battle to limit introducing noise when recovering details in the shadows. I've only recently begun to realize the benefits of ETTR , without clipping. I'm looking forward to a video that goes further into this subject.
Nice with a little explanation on the histogram. Could be a good idea with an ETTR video, showing how to check and correct for a new shot. Looking forward to the next video and tips for choosing focuspoint doing landscape photography. Thanks for sharing
I have grown to prefer more contrast in my images, which sometimes results in minor clipping. It's not always a bad thing. Thanks, Attillio. I look forward to this assignment!
How does one get such extreme black/white contrasts on some of the 'bad historgram' photos. I honestly love the look of those images but always wondered how you capture these? What camera settings ?
Hi Attilio, thx for the video and explanation. Great to see that “bad” histograms have an amazing result too, but indeed one has to know the basics of the tool before bending the rules. About ETTR, I bet you know already my answer 😀 I missed your poll on Instagram... I guess I follow too many people and miss the important ones.
Hi Attilio! On your Nikon d810, do you use the "flat" or 'neutral' picture profile? I read somewhere that it matters for the accuracy of the histogram!
Thank you again for another greatt video Attilio, this time for a simple view and explanation of what is the histogram. I for me would love to see a video about ettr, and please place it together with a tutorial on how to work it on lightroom. But I would very much like to see a video about composition also. Keep up the great work, you are a great teacher.
Grazie a presto. Mirko
I agree with others - very informative. The part of this video that i really appreciate are the examples you showed with histograms shifted far left or right that looked fantastic. I realize I need to trust my judgement more.....I was torn between what I am "suppose" to do with the histogram in post-processing versus what "effect or look" I want to achieve. I suppose i thought I was processing incorrectly if it wasn't balanced. Thanks for clearing that up.
Hi Attilio: Another great video! My son is just starting his journey in photography so I have sent him your link so he can subscribe. Also, I got the histogram T-Shirt last week and I love it. Can't wait to wear it when we can travel again. Any plans to produce more merchandise such as ball caps? Cheers, Keith
Very useful video, as always!-A bit off topic, but for a proposed black & white shot do you actually shoot in B&W or simply adjust everything in post processing?
I get confused by the ETTR and ETTL techniques that I’ve seen posted by various people. It would be great if you could talk about both and WHY your preference is to the right.. I think that this might help people to consider how their style might be helped by these approaches to exposure.. I am in the early stages of learning and developing a preferred style. I really enjoy what you do with your images and always learn something from your videos , but want to do my “thing”, just not quite sure what this is yet. So yes, please some ETTR would be great, some ETTL to provide a balance would be outstanding. Thanks for your videos, I look forward to seeing what Lake Tahoe has to offer on focus.
So I take it the colors on the histogram show what colors (yellow, cyan, magenta, green, etc.) fall into what range of the exposure (shadows, mid, highlight)? I'm very much enjoying these learning videos. Thank you.
Thanks! Actually the colors represent the color distribution in an image. If you look at black and white histogram, it will not show all those colors...
So you are often over exposing your shots to get the info shifted to the right?just trying to get my head around why if to the left you would create more noise...that confuses me a bit the noise.? Thanks as always
Yes Jane, I slightly over expose to keep move the histogram to the right, I generally do this when I take long exposure photos in low light conditions, so when I bring up the shadows in post, LR is not adding any noise. But I will make a video about this in the future to clarify things...
I am starting out in this new hobby of photography and I have to say that this is about one of the best channels on youtube that I have come across this far on the ins and outs of photography. Thank you kind Sir for sharing all your knowledge. God bless. You have another subscriber :)

I am glad to read this Eileen!
Really liked the stuff on not necessarily going for a “perfect “ histogram. This had puzzled me as I had liked some of my shots clipping to the left.
Thank you Frank!
Qua ci vuole proprio un esempio pratico sul campo!

@@AttilioRuffo Alright then. Looks like it could be an interesting video.
Hi Attilio. Great video. ETTR mean the photo is over exposed? and is more better to slighty over expose?
Thanks! With ETTR you will have a slightly over exposed image...
Added four (iczemi) image from Niagara, two as is and two processed.
