Mr Ambigious is originally for Quincy Jones, Mamamoo performed it for him when he visited in SK. Their jazzy early days are so good. 👌 Pre debut song is the birth of the Angel Line. Hehehe
the only sad thing about "don't be happy" is the lack of moonbyul and hwasa, but solar and wheein absolutely killed it. the audio version of the song is longer and has a lot more bumkey on it (he's an amazing r&b artist and you already noticed has an amazing voice. one of my favorite really early mamamoo live performances is a rendition of "all of me" they did with bumkey on the show 'yu huiyeoul's sketchbook') and that snippet at the end as an intro to all four members, you can tell at the start they were wanting to push the whole 'moonbyul and wheein are the dancers' thing that wound up never really going anywhere since they all preferred to focus on 'look, we can all sing!' i always forget just how much i love "peppermint chocolate" until i hear it start up again. again, sad that there's no real byul in the mv version, though she does do all the raps in most of the lives they've done for that song. at the time, though, they were still trying to find the 'voice' for byul since what she did do was such a high pitch. glad they let her use her natural tone by "mr ambiguous". and again, you could kind of see a bit of pushing wheein as a dancer here k.will is an other amazing male singer, as you could tell there. i don't think there's been any real interaction since "mr ambiguous" but wheein's "goodbye" frequently gets compared to k.will's "please don't" because of a similar twist in both mvs (that were many years apart) in "mr ambiguous", their ceo had called in a lot of favors, getting many artists he'd worked with to appear in the mv to hype it up. some of them you'll recognize as singers in their predebut tracks (bumkey and k.will) but others were just people kdh had worked with. the idea was to showcase mamamoo as 'musicians created by musicians' and funny about your 'maybe this one will be '60s' comment when it wound up being so. just know they don't actually hit the '70s until several title tracks down the line, but their early 'retro' style really does jump between multiple decades, basically anywhere from the '20s to the '70s seemed to be their playground early on
Perfect timing. In between comebacks I always go back to the beginning and revisit their retro era. They came out firing live bullets from day one and that jazzy style is right up my alley. The male dancers at the end of Peppermint Chocolate are VIXX's N and Hongbin. MMM & VIXX have stayed in touch tho you never seem to hear about it. Mamamoo has a lot of amazing songs and what I've found is that some songs, even though they have official MVs, performance videos, or live videos, are unknown. Like when I was listening to their Memory EP and came to really love I Love Too. It turns out that it has an official live video and it's an important song to Mamamoo AND Moo Moos. But I never see anyone talking about it outside of the deepest parts of stan Twitter. The woman who did the prank is actually super sweet and recently did a show for female idols from disbanded groups to make a comeback. I watched it because Sera Ryu, one of my fav K-Tubers, participated in the show and was like "It's the woman from Mr. Ambiguous!".
