  • Learning to Swim: Grandpa Mel’s Story Time
Carton story reminds me of wanted to learn to swim when I was a kid growing up near the ocean. So here's the story:
Carlton wanted so badly to learn to swim. Even if he wasn’t so afraid of the water, his family didn’t have the money for swim lessons. So Carlton just walked, wondered, and dreamed about all the things he could do if he knew how to swim.
He imagined all the possibilities. He could spend long days at the beach relaxing, watching the water, and floating casually on an inner tube.
Learning to surf would be so much fun. Just getting into the water, catching that first wave, and then moving on to the fancy stuff. Wow, and what about cliff diving? I would love that, he thought.
“I want to parasail and ride a jet ski. How fun and fast that would be! Sailboarding would be calm and restful. And what about water skiing? How would I ever have the strength to stay up on those skis?”
He imagined becoming a lifeguard at the pool. How fun it would be to jump off the high dive and zoom down the water slide.
“I could safely go on any kind of boat, go down the river like Tom Sawyer, or even be a tugboat captain,” Carlton thought.
And he also dreamed of all the things he could do underwater. Just being under the water would be a thrill. Finding treasures, discovering lost cities, and exploring the deepest parts of the ocean. “I would feel like a hero. I might even be an Olympic swimmer and win first place.”
One day, Carlton finally decided to talk to his mom about his dreams.
“Mom, I really want to learn to swim. Is there any way we could afford swimming lessons?”
Mom smiled happily. “Carlton, I’m glad you brought this up. I just sold one of my oil paintings for a lot of money. We can go down tomorrow and sign you up for lessons.”
The exciting day finally came, and as Carlton started his first swim lesson, his dreams for the future kept him working hard at learning to swim.
