- As the first and only cosmonaut in the GDR, in 1978 Sigmund Jähn manages to fly into space and back to earth. On August 26, the "Soyuz" rocket takes off in Kazakhstan. On board are Sigmund Jähn and his Soviet commander Walerij Bykowski. Shortly thereafter it is in all newspapers. The headline reads: "The first German in space - a citizen of the GDR".
The archive material shows scenes of his return from outer space. Both astronauts are ceremoniously received. Head of state and party Erich Honecker welcomes them proudly himself.
Jähn receives the awards Hero of the GDR and Hero of the Soviet Union. During his lifetime he will be celebrated as a folk hero.
