Here's an interesting fact that I was taught in a neuroscience lecture: sound is a percept and without something to pick it up (like ears) there is no such thing as sound, just waves vibrating in the air. Therefore, if a tree falls and there's nobody around, it has not made a sound.
Shalan Sharma hmm, well technically a percept has to be perceived and a microphone does convert sound waves into electrical energy - so yes, if it’s picked up by a mic, then it has made a sound :))
Shalan Sharma to perceive something (in terms of neuroscience at least) is to interpret sensory information - surprisingly, microphones do work in quite similar ways to the peripheral auditory system. For example the tympanic membrane (eardrum) vibrates in response to sound waves, much like a microphone does (I think it’s called the microphone diaphragm). Of course there are many differences, but fundamentally they both receive mechanical energy in the form of vibrations and go through the process of transduction to convert this into a more useful output.
Such interesting questions, wow, I love it! In class we just call them mechanical vibrations that disrupt the medium they’re travelling in - so we call them sound only after perception, but others may define it differently
Shalan Sharma aha, keep them coming, it’s very thought provoking and I’m trying to procrastinate revision ;). I guess I would argue that it’s similar to if only one person hears a particular sound and then dies. A sound was made as vibrations were perceived - we have no way of accessing that information, but we can’t say that it was never there.
Of course it’s different if we have no way of knowing whether anything was perceived in the first place. So to answer that, I’d personally say there is no conclusive way of proving there ever was a sound.
I’m curious though, what are your thoughts?
@@shalansharma443 I'd agree with that, although the mechanisms are vaguely similar, the actual perception part is influenced heavily by things that only a being with consciousness can have, such as knowledge of prior experiences and the ability to attend to certain stimuli while ignoring others.
In which case, my answer to your very first question should've been related to how if a tree falling is recorded by a mic, then it did make a sound because we can see that data, I really don't know what my answer would be if the scenario was that the mic picked it up, but didn't save the data.
I feel as though I'm behind my face because that's where I view the world through my eyes from, personally I don't think consciousness is necessarily located in our brains (though brain activity may aid our awareness). I haven't looked into the philosophy of all this, but maybe I should!
I'm open to changing my mind on pretty much anything I ever write, so I'd love to know how you view consciousness.

Ooh I hadn’t thought about it like that before, it’s an interesting concept. I wonder if there’s been any research into it on the neuroscience side of things - I imagine philosophers would be publishing about those things (but maybe not).
Perhaps it depends on when the person lost their sight. I’m curious as to where a person born without sight would feel “they” are in their body, compared to someone who lost their sight only a few years ago. Now that you mention it, I just realised that, bar skin, all of our sensory organs in our head so it’s probably not because of my vision alone.
Non-duality - I know what I’ll be researching tonight, it sounds very interesting. I’d like to say that I really enjoy how critically you think, it’s quite refreshing. Most people just nod their heads and act like they agree which won’t do much to stimulate growth in learning.

@@AitanaB-s9v I think it was a comment under their "Curry Farts and Melodrama" video and while discussing their beginnings on RUclips in a video much later, Rosie admitted to being kind of sceptical at the beginning/not liking it because comments were like "The brunette's hot, can't understand what the blonde is saying", and we picked it up from there. I can't remember in which video they discussed that though
