  • This past weekend I was fortunate enough to leave the 2021 Amelia Island Concours in this Ferrari 275 GTB Competizione Speciale.

After the rear engined 250 LM was denied homologation, Ferrari had to modify the then newly released 275 GTB into a more purposeful race car. This led to the production of the Ferrari 275 GTB Competizione Speciale. The modifications compared to the standard 275 included a revamped design, 21 gauge aluminum alloy body, smaller diameter chassis, drilled holes in parts to save weight, various magnesium parts, a 10% reduction in overall size, and a tuned type 213 engine that made it essentially a 6-carb 250 LM engine. These modifications were initially tested on a prototype car before being finalized on the production cars. However, only a total of 4 chassis (not including the prototype) ended up being assigned for these production cars as the FIA was convinced that it was way too reminiscent of the 250 GTO, so they refused to homologate the car as a GT condender because it was 500 lbs lighter than the road-going GTB. This angered Enzo Ferrari, so a middle ground was met where the model could be allowed to be raced mid-season with ballast weight to put the car at 2156 lbs. The first production car was most reminiscent in design to the 250 GTO; the second was similar in design but less similar to the 250 GTO and was in fact the only 275 GTB Competizione Speciale with race history (being successful too); the third car is the car featured in this video and has the design most similar to the standard 275 GTB out of the known built production cars; a fourth chassis was also reserved for a 275 GTB Competizione Speciale but there is no public info on this car other than the chassis number it was assigned, its existence being unknown. After these cars, the more numerous, yet still extremely rare, "standard" 275 GTB/C models were produced to more outwardly reflect the production version, making the Ferrari 275 GTB Competition Speciale the most extreme version of the Ferrari 275 GTB and my favorite car ever made…

Through a precarious series of events, I was given the opportunity to ride in this car leaving the Amelia Island Concours. The previous day, the car was having some throttle issues and was not wanting to idle. Luckily, the car was much more cooperative when I was in the car, whether it was because of the startup sequence, a proper warming up, or some other factors. However, this car was not made for the low speeds of Amelia Island traffic so getting it going still wasn't easy. Yet the engine sounds magnificent no matter what the speeds and especially when accelerating when we had a quick dash through first gear. Although almost more was attained the previous day, I cannot complain given the circumstances. This experience was unforgettable and I still can't believe it happened.
