It's Japanese culture, when you are even remotely associated with something that causes inconvenience or harm to someone you apologize, it's kinda funny how it works because in NA/EU the more you apologize they more it seemd you are being disingenuous, where as in Japan the more you apologize they more it seems like you actually mean it, The FFXIV team had to deal with this in Japan they wanted to put out more words of apologies when the servers were bogged down after the great WOW exodus but their NA marketing team kept telling them no don't apologize anymore because they may not and probably will not believe it

I'd recommend reading the manga. I love the series but the anime can slow down to a crawl. Particularly what I do is read the manga then watch clips from the anime about things that I'm interested.
