I remember I'd convinced myself that the ring Martha had in the Doctors Daughter was the Master's when I was younger 😂, little me was disappointed at the time but still loved watching this at my grandparents on Christmas day.
I simply enjoyed the drama in this episode for the most part. I love the scene where Wilf and the Doctor are talking in the cafe. It's cool bc it's like two war veterans talking to each other. I love the dialogue too. They couldn't have described regeneration in a more gut wrenching way and it also emphasises why the Doctor needs a companion. There are other scenes that I love but that one is a highlight for sure, it really sets up the next episode.
I loved seeing wilf on the tardis! I believe the senior citizens finding out where the doctor was, was a wink at the fans of that time who had the same sort of teams digging up shooting locations and showing up. I found the master’s return really interesting in light of how the journeys end doctor, who seemed to be really the doctor, grew from this doctors hand. So a bit of the master was all that was needed to bring him back. This ep showed sort of the energy entity time lords seem to be, in a renewable physical case. Lots of cool ideas in here. Lots more hints about how bad ass time lords can be. But the writers show us hints and bits and that’s cool. I thought multiple masters was kinda dumb but when the time lords showed up at the end….wow! That was amazing. And Timothy Dalton (James Bond) playing that final Time Lord….that got me. There are some things in this finale that are there for the classic fans but they are not essential to know (stuff about time lords and the Doctor/Master history). I loved parts of this finale but not other parts. More later 😁
I kind of love how critical you are of his dress sense in this story. Lol Most of the time The Master does dress appropriately, especially as a Master of Disguise. Although this particular story he doesn't exactly care how he's dressed.
I really like the master. I’m not entirely sure what it is about him. But he’s a really cool villain to me. And Wilfred I think is my favourite character that isn’t a doctor or companion.
just thought I would mention the Time Lord person we see at the end is called Rassilon played in this by Timothy Dalton who played as James Bond in the late 80s, just a bit of trivia for you. another thing to mention Bernard Cribbens who plays Wilfred actually died last year which is sad.
Mate I’m 1 minute in and your reaction is priceless. Your reaction when he transformed 😂😂😂 I agree the jumping was a bit excessive and not needed but it was just another WOW kind of reaction thing. Loved the time lords coming back
I've always thought that Part 2 of this story is better than Part 1. There's something about this particular episode that feels off to me, but I think that Part 2 fixes it. Judging by what you've said about the Master, I think you'd like the original, played by Roger Delgado. He's a lot like what you've been saying you want to see, in that he feels deserving of the name, and that he properly feels like an evil counterpart to The Doctor. Don't get me wrong, I love John Simm (although I'll agree there's a lot of nostalgia talking lol) but Delgado is my favourite. I'm incredibly excited to see what you think of Part 2, since it has some of my favourite moments in the show.
you'll see some different regenerations of the master later in other stories but I think the best version of his character was portrayed by Roger Delgado in the classic series. Maybe try the 3rd doctor story "The Daemons" where he's like this satanic cult leader and its brilliant. (either this or terror of the autons, the first master story ever, or the sea devils... all three stories are great, maybe do a poll to see what people would prefer) the 3rd doctor is often compared to James Bond because he's very suave and "cool" and with that analogy, Delgado's Master is the doctors Moriarty, being again very cool but like a moustache twirling villain
@@sallyatticum it’s hardly a spoiler to say that the master will come back and will be played by different actors… I didn’t even say which episodes they’re in… get a grip lmao
I'm sorry, but I feel like people in general really underappreciate wilf when the woman says to him, "You never killed a man." His reply is so undervalued "Don't say that like it's shameful"
10th: I’m going to die. Wilf: Well, so am I, one day 10th: Don’t you dare Wilf: Alright, I’ll try not too. That scene still hurts after Bernard Cribbins who plays Wilf died last year. 😢
If you have not already seen it, Bernard Cribbins once appeared on a show called Fawlty Towers as a salesman. You should watch the series, only 12 episodes, but they are all brilliant :)
Although the cafe scene is great, this episode is basically all about various characters navel-gazing. Very little actually happens until toward the end; but even then, it's incredibly silly (although the return of the Time Lords is a great cliffhanger!) It basically feels as though RTD was told to take his hour-long storyline and expand it to 2 hours 20 minutes.

In my personal opinion the big 2 parter with the daleks was better then this final but the ending for the 10th doctor is soooo good you’ll love that part. Don’t get me wrong these 2 episodes are good too but I still prefer the dalek 2 parter
The whole Master Race thing is goofy as hell but it's the one thing that isn't amazing IMO when you've seen the two episodes together - Part I's definitely all setup for the finale, I wasn't sure how I felt the first time I'd seen Part I too.
Wilf is just brilliant. I'm so glad they brought him back and he got to have an adventure of his own. I thought this master was good at the time, but the next one, in my opinion, is SUCH a step up from John Simm. I hope that's not too much of a spoiler -- the master has been recurring and changing, like the Doctor, since classic who.
At the beginning of this episode, as the Doctor is stepping out of the TARDIS, he mentions he got married to “Good Queen Bess” aka Elizabeth the 1st but then left her - which now finally explains why the older Queen Elizabeth shows up & is mad at him at the end of The Shakespeare Code 👑
I know people don't always get on with this Master (though he isn't hated overall in fandom... most do love him) ... for me it makes sense why he's the way he is... the Master can be very campy and crazy...and the best ones are those that feel like an actual opposite to their Doctor... hence why the first master was brilliant cos he complemented his crazy campness and sauvness with the 3rd Doctor's james bond scientist... 10 is a bit manic, but good chaos... and so the saxon master is evil chaos... but there's an element of of both wanting to be each others friend again but having different ideas of what it means to exist... and this crazy master also has a reason to be the way he is... while Ainley and Robert Masters of Classic Who were just plain crazy for the sake of it... i also love the chemistry of the DT and Simm ... especially in part 2... (i see from comments you have seen it) you can see at one point that they were friends who went the opposite way. Regarding the name... its like the Doctor said in series 3 "its a psychologists field day" 😂... for him the "master" means to rule... so this master turning everyone into him ...well that's the ultimate narcissistic win isn't it 😂 its also a win against the Doctor... becoming the very people that the Doctor has a fondness for... he's also desperate to have his home again... so while on surface level there's a lot of cheesy stuff... it makes sense in regards to this version and his motives and experiences... lets not forget he was also involved in the time war.... and ran away cos of the trauma... while the Doctor killed his own people to save everyone... again perfect mirroring This first ep is more about setting up the second part... but i love so many character moments... like the cafe scene... it hits even more now that Bernard cribbins died... 😢 ... but also a great set up for you what u obviously know happens in part 2... The way the master comes back is crazy and cheesy as hell... i like it and hate it at the same time... And there's loads of star wars references as u will now know throughout the two parter 😅 I hope part 2 was better for u... I absolutely adore this two parter for how on the surface it looks so crazy and action to get mainstream attention on Christmas day... but theres a deeper darker character story of a man who initially tried to run away from death...but then decided if hes gonna go... he's gonna go epicly....and well ... only to realise where his reward actually lies...
Oh I forgot to add to my always long paragraphs 😂 that re politician Master... was also a political shade at New Labour by RTD... I guess that's why I love that too... ofcourse it's not the main focus... but the "popularity" of Saxon was a commentary on the Blair obsession back in the late 90s and early 2000s... having grown up in that time... it was very resonating satire ... we all hated Blair by 2007 😂 Hence why we also get the Obama stuff as well... cos he was gonna cure all the world's problems... oh wait... he's the Master now... whoops 😂... again it's making fun of that political landscape we were living in at that time and clinging out hopes on these self serving politicians

I’ll be honest. There’s some great Masters in the show. But I think Classic Who did probably the version of The Master that you’re thinking of. Like a Moriarty to The Doctor’s Sherlock type stint. They hardly emphasise that here.
Wilf finally onboard the TARDIS! I agree that the homeless feral Master is a lot cooler; a bit more Voldemort or Heath Ledger's Joker than just "Evil David Tennant". Also fun fact: the Time Lord narrator we see at the end of Part 1 is Timothy Dalton, known for Hot Fuzz and Penny Dreadful, among other things, but especially as one of the earlier James Bonds!!!
