The original name of Winnemucca was " Frenchman's Ford". What is missing from the Museum is the History of the Chinese. When I lived there, many of the Chinese built structures were still there. The city destroyed the buildings and sold the property to developers. Criminal act. Huge Chinese history including a web of tunnels under the town. Water Canyon was always known as Water Creek Canyon. Chief Winnemucca's winter campground was up there. No, I won't reveal the location. We used to hunt arrowheads up there, pre 1968 ban. I also found a 1500s Spanish bridle there. Verified by experts. We often went to the Martin, that was back when it was authentic Basque food, made and served by Basques. Originally there were to seatings. The bell rang the doors opened and every one rushed in, often the majority of the patrons were Basque. The food was set out in waves. The large metal pitchers had red wine, the huge bowls of salads and pork and green bean dishes and steamed clams and rice among other delicacies... amazing. After approx an hour the bell rang which meant you are done, beat it. The doors closed.. the place was cleaned up, closed for an hour and then the bell rings again and the second wave of diners came in. There were two such establishments primarily serving the Basques. We preferred the other which is no longer there. PICON PUNCH. The recipe is NOT what he said. Originally it was Amer Picon, brandy, a dash of soda, a mystery ingredient in some older bars. Amer Picon is no longer sold in the US, for whatever reason. Available in France and around Europe, Australia. The recipe for Picon Punch was on the label of the bottle. There are some enterprising souls in Reno who are replicating Amer Picon to get back to the original Amer Picon rather than unsuitable substitutes now being passed off as authentic. There used to be a Basque Bar at the NUGGET in Reno who were the last to serve the real deal.. sadly the Bar is no longer there. There is so much more to Winnemucca than can be covered in 27 minutes. PS. My stepfather was the Controller/Auditor of the Sonoma Inn for 11 years. I believe it is now the Winners Inn. The Sonoma was the largest Hotel, Gaming House in Nevada until the mafia went to Las Vegas. They had a full time band playing anything from pre WWII to current to Latin Jazz. The band Leader was Rudy Rudarte (sp).. The place was rockin'. Owned by Dan Sims and Jack Sommers. He had a private plane and collected Chinese artifacts from the tunnels and abandoned structures; the Joss House and the Temple as well as small houses. . I have some of their opium bottles. Two of my three brothers were born in Winnemucca. There are more home use bomb shelters in Winnemucca than any other town in No Nevada. Winnemucca is in Humboldt County, named after the famed German Explorer. When I lived in Winnemucca there were 13 churches and 13 brothels. A balanced community.
So...in a high desert community you are going ahead with the paper mill? There is a reason why Salt Lake County said no thank you. Water. Who were their original financial backers? Why did they pull out of the project? Water is your most valuable asset.
