Thank you for posting this. This is EXACTLY what I've been missing and generally slacking off with. Stretching and flexibility is so important - in so many aspects of our lives. Thanks for the reminder!
A good workout to try once your elbows can touch the ground while on your back is reverse push ups. Use your elbows to push yourself off the ground (it's only going to be an inch or so) and back down again. Really hits the same back muscles you use while drawing a bow.
Was watching a Howard Hill video and one statement he made caught my attention. He said, "Grip the bow. Take ahold of it." This is exactly the opposite of what I was told my entire archery journey, a fifty year journey. So I thought, ok.. let me prove Howard Hill wrong. I started gripping the bow. Not a tight grip. Just a medium grip. DANG. Here is the short explanation. The muscles in your bow arm act differently when you shoot with an open hand grip verses a closed hand grip. Try it. Maybe it will help you, maybe it won't. But it totally changed my control of the shot.
Working in the physical therapy department at the Hospital, I always tell my patients to work on their flexability. Because it makes so much of a diffenence. I am going to show them this video.
@@fulcrum789 yes, I agreed. I am helping my fencing instructor during lessons. We empathise this all along, on each training we show stretching and order to do more at home. And we know who did and who didn't. And I will show this video to the class. Instructor will love it for sure.
Great video. I am a sports massage therapist. You could also probably use some good triggerpoint release in your scapula. Lats, infraspinatus, traps etc
It does not, it only extend the range of motion to create more levrage, if your over bowed your stil gona be weak, but you get to use more motor units. And the follow trough is a reaction based on alignment.
Still say when I got that recommendation on the $107 take down bow that you were reviewing I don't think I would be sitting in my room with my PSE on the wall. (Let me add it's only on the wall because it's raining outside) I bought your bow strings I bought the arrows that you've reviewed. And it has been nothing but honest reliable information , and it has come in handy when I have no one to turn to.
I just tried out the stretch for the first time and couldn't touch my elbows to the ground without tension in my muscles. Great advice, I can wait to gain the flexibility and put it to use in my archery endeavors
There's just something about your videos. I just feel like there is a close interaction with you through your videos. Its viby. Not like a boring archery content. Its smooth. There's just something about archery that is so darn relaxing and like breath taking. I can't explain it. I started archery with an amazing pvc bow I made. I tried shooting with a fibre glass bow and I didn't see the need to buy a fiberglass bow because the pvc bow actually competes with it. It's not better. The pvc bow is probably a tiny bit slower but the PVC bow to me is actually kinda almost equivalent to a fairly good fiberglass bow. It's unbelievable how good a bow pvc pipe can actually make.
You are on to something Kramer. I have been working on the same problem. If I'm not still consciously pulling before I release, the shot always goes left, bad. If I am still pulling, it goes perfect. Wow! Now to do this every time is the challenge. Thanks for the exercises.
I’m new to trad archery but have shot compound for 40 years . I did the same thing tried to force my follow through. Started stretching and what a difference it made.
Very good simple advice and very true... please can pot some photos of that archery range. It looks amazing and we are in the process of planning our new club range

Anywhere you go & everything you do in archery , there’s always going to be some who try’s to critique your stance , your fallow through , your bow , your arrows anything , all you have to remember is to be you & do things your way , yes take advice from anyone , the more input you have in the sport the better off you,ll be . I’ve been critiqued on the glove I use , it’s a old biker glove leather of corse with just the main 3 fingers you use . I don’t like the way archery gloves fit my hand either it’s to big or to small this glove is just right & I don’t like leather pads , I shoot a Martin Jaguar elite 40 pounds @ 28 inches (recurve) I shoot 32 inch Easton 6.5 bow hunter arrows ( carbon fiber) I Prefer a hip quiver over a back quiver or holding my arrows or putting them in my back pocket . Anybody’s going to critique everything you do , you use & the way you shoot . Just go out there & have fun doing so & be you , that’s truly what the sport is all about . I also have bad shoulders & I still get out there & do my thing bad shoulders & all .
Hey Kramer, what bow would you recommend to me and what weight are you shooting? I was shooting a Bearpaw Recurve with 40lbs for three years now and I thought about treating myself to a new Recurve especially for Hunting. Don't get me wrong my current Recurve is alright for Hunting, but it's also very tall and I had problems getting through brush more than once. Greetings from Germany.
My problem was aiming. Maybe I wasn't holding the arrow up to my face enough, but I got a compound sight and peep, and my consistency got staggeringly better.
My Main problem for the longest time from 1997-1998 to 2002 was Using the wrong eye when I have a clearly dominate left eye with glasses on. Glasses off then my right eye is dominate due to how bad the left is. I have shot without my glasses one time since getting them in late 1998 or early 1999 due to a kids summer rec class one time having too many left eye archers 3 of us and one bow I too them off for the day so I could use the other recurves they had, soon after the How-Kota archery got the Genesis Bows, the X for teens and adults and a Kids original as by that time in 2003 the models had split from Genesis 15-35 pounds to the 45 pound max and the 35 pound bows.
I found a similar thing with my bow arm. Couldn’t rotate and get the elbow facing out and had pain when shooting. Eventually found that my range that my humerus could rotate was significantly less than my other arm. A bit of regular stretching and problem solved!
My problem isn't my back. My issue is short arrows. I have a draw length of 33-34" Most readily available arrows stop at 32". Most of the time I am stopping at my forward shoulder. According to everything I have found I should be shooting 36" minimum. I own a 6' long bow (@50#) so I know the bow will pull the length.
Thx for the video, this is so true and essential, a good 'form' and 'stance' make a world of difference!!! Also training at least 3 times a week for minimum 30 minutes and trying to make each shot perfect does it for musscle memory! Kind regards from the Belgian Ardennes and stay healty.
@@yewtreeknives5834 not realy, stance and posture go togheter, but you can stil mess up the alignment. Thats why teknuiqe is more like parts of a form and why form is for cake,
Good suggestions.. you should examine your form on your videos. Your not actually following through until after the arrow is long gone. To pull your hand back after a static release isn't follow through. This is very common. Just needs a little work on timing. BigJim
Have you ever tried using an arrow clicker where you set it up so that in the last 1/8" inch of your draw drops off the tip of the arrow I used to try to use squeeze my shoulder blades together to make the last 1/8" it sounds odd but it works
it's better to do the 1st exercise you do with a resistance band when you are starting out with the movement, gives a bit of flex and pull for any part you may struggle with
I never knew I didn’t have great flexibility in my wrists until my first lesson with my coach. She pointed it out right away and here I thought my whole life I just sucked at push-ups or sm👁
Good tip to keep in mind, thanks for the vid on this. Generally better to stay in good shape, and possibly have good flexibility or whatever too, anyway lol
Yea dude stretching helps literally everything in your life. Tbh it actually will fix most peoples back problems provided theyre young and havent been through any severe trauma. Your spine naturally straightens out the tighter your muscles get. Which leads to back pain because then your back gets less support against gravity. Stretch stretch stretch. Also, proper face pulls and scap retraction.
The only problem I see is your aiming about a second too long you should have your shooting solution before you even draw and the other thing is your muscular stamina is low you twitch too much. I've been shooting off and on since I was 12 I'm 37 now you got to get full control of those muscles don't let them twitch. Another thing get rid of that wrist guard you're not shooting 140 lb longbow you're shooting this 60 lb Max recurve.
It is solo great to hear someone else admit that they are as human as the rest of us . Thanks for the stretch exercises.
