@Midwest Model Railroad Workshop. Hi there! I noticed you are putting double shelf couplers on your 8500HP turbine. I have 4 myself. Also, a bunch of Verandas and Slabs. Are you sure you are putting the right couplers on them? The two 8500HP Turbines laid to rest might have Double Shelf couplers on them now but when they were in service, they had a coupler that resembles a Type H coupler. The H is the coupler used on the UP E8, E9 and passenger Streamliners in the 50's and 60's. The
8500 HP turbine has a TYPE F coupler that is similar to the H. The Union Pacific Turbine Era book by A.J. Wolf shows All the 8500HP turbines having an F coupler in service pics. Even the Veranda turbines have them. The Standard turbine had a standard E coupler. The double shelf SE and SF coupler came about in the 70's but not sure exactly when. I'll check, but the Turbines were all retired by 1969. (I checked and the SE and SF came about in 1975) So turbines never had double shelf couplers.

@bryiansones150 I have the late era version and from some of the photos I've seen alot of the equipment had shelf couplers so I went with that for me later versions! Plus I love how they look on there as well and they are a fantastic coupler that really hold the units together well!

@@midwestmodelrailroadworkshop The Type F and H are interlocking couplers too. I think you might be seeing the release pin at the top thinking it is the upper shelf lock. As I said all turbines were retired by 1969. 8500HP turbines 1958-69. short life span. The F is a pretty cool looking coupler too. It has an Oval Hole split in half on one side of the coupler with a triangle looking alignment pin. The side with the knuckle has a recess to accept the opposing coupler's alignment pin and a lock on the bottom like a lower shelf E coupler or SE and SF Double shelf coupler.
The F and H coupler are wider than the SE double shelf if that's what you are using. An SE double shelf is just a type E lower shelf with the upper lock added but stronger. The SF is a F coupler with the upper and lower locks. The SE and SF double shelf is what you see on hazardous material tank cars from 1975 to today.
Kadee makes the SF and so does Sergent Coupler, also the H and F. They are now produced by prototypecouplers.com. Check them out. The Kadee you do this to make an F or H from the SF (Use a Kadee #118 SF coupler and cut the top shelf off to make a Type F coupler in HO scale. Cut both shelfs off to make a Type H coupler) I personally don't use the Kadee's I use the Sergent couplers so someone I know that uses the Kadees passed this tip to me.
So, I added it to the thread. It's your Turbines so you can do what you want. 😃
I was just letting you know since you were going through all that trouble to make them looke like the prototypes.

@bryiansones150 All the photos I've seen of the Big Blows including early to late show them having shelf couplers!

@pmsteamrailroading Not sure exactly but it could effect how many products they produce and the prices for that stuff going forward.

Do you think you'll ever have them all running at once? The sound will be awesome!

@pleiku887 eventually once I get a DCC system I'll definitely have them all running on my workbench! Definitely going to be loud!

@kenkerber-gl2ng it's not that I can't afford those things it's that I don't know how to use fancy cameras. I have a phone stand somewhere i just need to find it.
