Second they use 18 dogs for 1200 sheep that is 3 dogs for each pack of 200 sheep which is not going to be enough in the shephearding system they use = "couchade libre" meaning the sheep spend the night in the wild. (Also in der Nacht sind die Schafe nicht in einen Nachtpferch eingezäunt) As the guy explain 3 dogs to protect 200 sheep at night in presence of a wolf pack is equivalent to no dog, they admit it but what do they do to that? Nothing. Hence the toll of 150 sheep for a 1200 herd. Dogs reduce predation, yes, but don't prevent totally from attacks in absence of electrified night fences. The only system that reduces predation to almost zero in the combination of dogs in sufficient number (7 dogs by 200 sheep), electrified night fences and human presence. The place where they apply it (like in the Abruzzis) they have attacks but almost no predation. (bei freiem Weidegang in der Nacht braucht man bei 200 Schafe mindestens 7 Hunde). A problem could be the type of protection dogs, they have to be very agressive, chasing the wolf and working like a pack AND confident with tourists. Not easy, in Italy they do it well. France has the second highest toll (number of dead sheep / wolf) in Europe mainly due to a too much relaxed and unefficient protection system (and sometimes no protection at all). You may also think of the curious combination of free night shephearding in wolf presence inside a shooting field !!

The dogs looked like cheap investments, do they have spikecollars? 4 or 6 X 50m electric fence is enough for 1200 sheep and a military field is big enough, without the farmers or puplic traffic. No problem. It only takes about one hour to put up the fence, when there is a complex terrain. I have worked as a shepherd a few years in a military field in Bavaria. Now there are wolves. My 100 sheep and 100 goats are protectet from 5 dogs and an electrified fence. Mastin Espanol, Kangal and the mix of them are a very good team. 3 Dogs for my 4 water buffalos and 3 dogs for 1 horse, this is how I do it. The wolves are next to me, but I startet to breed my own dogs 2011 before the wolves startet to breed in 2017 for the first time since150 years in bavaria. It was also a mix between a wolf from the East German/West Poland - population and a wolf from the south alpine - population. The massive body of the Mastin Espanol is not build to hunt the wolves, they will stay between the sheep while the Kangal goes for a wolf hunt. And the half-breeds, I call them MASGAL, help where and how they can. The dogs need spikecollars. They didn´t talked about dead dogs or dogs (heros) who killed wolves, in the video. This is what real lifstock guardians will do, they would fight to death and not go for a sleep under the bush. Do they feed the dogs fastfood or real meat? I prefer meat from the butcher or hunter for my dogs. No wild porks. A group with the best dogs(adult females) have to sleep on a savety place (inside the empty fence) at the day and at night they stay in front of the fence. You can´t think, that the dogs don´t need your help. They will protect your animals, if you have understood their system. If you want it you can have it! Dogs or wolves? Das kann ich mir gut vorstellen, daß die Wölfe durch ihre ständigen Angriffe stärker sind. Wie kann man sich noch schützen?
