After the Walt Disney Studios began to struggle financially from the expensive and elaborate films following Snow White, the studio decided to create a simpler film called Dumbo. Though it was a cheaper film to make, Walt and his staff of artists continued to push the discipline of storytelling.
The Walt Disney artists sure went wild with their imagination in this film… especially with one of the first sequences the writers conjured up: the Pink Elephants on Parade. It’s a crazy, kooky, clammy, crashy, chaotic, cookoo, jambory of surrealist sights, sounds, symbols and songs magically morphing and moving in a way Disney animation had never been before. I don’t know about you, but this scene definitely freaked me out and made me uncomfortable as a kid and I just didn’t understand its purpose within Dumbo, but today I am ready to dive into explaining this parade.
I post every Tuesday and Thursday, so check back then for more Disney, Pixar, Harry Potter, Star Wars and movie videos! If you have any questions about the Disney universe that you would want answered in a video, please ask away in the comment section!

QOTD: Why do you think Pink Elephants on Parade was added to Dumbo? Let me know below and have a magical day!
I think they where high on something like marihuana of cocaine.
Huluceingting. CAN you PLEASE do a Disney prince week like you did for the Disney princess week. THANKS. Sweet Danceing.
They must be like this hey guys what if Dumbo gets wasted and he starts seeing pink elephants all why being high.
Dumbo was tortured by the other elephants, so being haunted by demonic pink elephants who can contort into things that are FREAKY AS HECKFIRE is a representation of his fear and anxiety towards the other elephants.
I really don't know maybe they wanted to see how drunk Dumbo or they just add the pink elements on the parade instead of delete scene i guess.
We actually discussed this in my animation class! My teacher explained that there was an old saying that when someone saw pink elephants, it basically called the person drunk. This was especially used in with liquors that caused hallucinations. In this extent, they used the animation to show the young elephant and mouse being wasted to the point of seeing pink elephants on parade. Little history for you Issac!
They don’t call them spirits for nothing.
Weren't they a common hallucination
I always thought it was supposed to represent how a child sees the circus. Bright with a lot of patterns, not making sense with what they know of how the world works. It makes some afraid and others laugh, just like the scene did
The live-action version of this film will be weird, especially when "Pink Elephants" shows up. Weirder still, when it's seen in 3D
Agreed! I am excited to see what it will be like! Thanks for watching!
Charles Lee wait, so Disney is truly live-actioning everything?!
Wotso Videos are they really going to have a live action of Dumbo???
Oh my gosh, that will be weird
Next, they'd make a live-action version of "Enchanted."
Oh, wait.
If I can be honest it’s Disney and his animators and crew showing their sheer Technical prowess. And on a technical level it’s one of the most impressive scenes in animated history.
1:05 WHY WAS EVERYONE BUT ME TERRIFIED OF THIS SCENE AS A KID??? IT WAS MY FAVORITE SCENE AS A KID - NO JOKE!
Same!!!!
^
Me too!!!
Brian Jr Spero Same! Love it all! 😁
Same
I love your dancing, Issac. Dumbo is a very relatable to the film's audience but that scene always remained a mystery to me until now. It is funny that Dumbo was based on a true story about an circus Elephant named Jumbo. So maybe, the Pink Elephants were a form of escapism for Dumbo (and considering that the real life Jumbo was given a lot of alcohol to drink in the Victoria era, that absolutely makes sense - though giving an animal alcohol is very cruel).
Keep up the great work as always, Issac. =)
Oh thank you! I really appreciate all of the support on my videos and dancing. Thanks for watching!
actingmylife oh...
Tht dancing was 11/10

To be honest, this scene never scared me as a kid, nor was it a scene I adored. I remember I was just confused because I thought it had no reason for being in the movie, but now it actually does make a lot more sense
Yea I was never scared of this as a kid but I just danced along with the pink elephants and I still do I don't even care about them being drunk and hallucinating and causing it to happen but I'm my opinion who ever came up with this song to in the movie is a genius
That scene always creeped me out as a kid.
why?
That scene somehow reminds me of Fantasia.
Absolutely! Fantasia has a lot of weird and artistic scenes they explored with. Thanks for watching!
I think this movie gave some influences to one of the next disney movies after Dumbo,
"The Three Caballeros".
Anybody agree with me.
The music reminds me of the Sorcerer's Apprentice scene with Mickey Mouse, the wizard, and the multiplying brooms. Very similar rhythm and horns.
I think there are other meanings for the pink elephants. When Dumbo and Tim hallucinated it was during a depressing time and also a period of coldness and neglect. Kids getting hurt while not being attended to was a real life concern. Disney leaving a reminder that the very kids who enjoy these movies should be cared for the adults around them is an interesting point and warning. Great video Issac. Though the real question is why two individuals are having the same hallucination?
Thank you so much! I'm not sure. Maybe Timothy also just was seeing something, but I feel like it was probably the same thing. Thanks for watching!
Personally as a fan of everything creative I always chuckled about the scene. As a kid I always thought it was fun and awesome that Dumbo could make bubbles shaped like elephants. X3
Now I think it is funny and creative and I think it would be hard to see something like this today. Thanks for watching!
You said it! Watch it high and be blown away. If you don't do that kind of thing, good for you. :)
I wish this kind of surreal thing came up more often in modern movies. Not everyone has a short attention span.
MarcMarioMaster Innocence, I miss it.
As a child I was terrified of the pink elephants (along with the song in Winnie the Pooh about Hefalumps and weasels). Thankfully that has changed with age and seeing Isaac dance to it in the background is just the cherry on top of the cake ☺️
@Sunflowers&Lace, you'll actually find that "Heffalumps and Woozles" actually recycled some of the animation used from "Pink Elephants on Parade."
You think the song is creepy in english? You don’t know how creeped out I was with the spanish version 😥
Translated, it starts with a “Who’s it? Who’s that? They’re on a parade, look at them jump, they’re maybe satan’s relatives”
Then “Here they are, going around the bed in reverse, they won’t stop marching, they scare me and want to launch me. What will I do? There’s nothing to drink! I won’t get drunk again!” and “I challenged the devil and cut his tail, the tricolor elephants have made me lose my worth” and “the horror, leave me alone, I can’t anymore, they’re leaving now”...
Dude watching those lyrics + video as a kid CREEPED ME OUT
Because to teache us that we mustnt drink a lot of drink 😅
julia and her co Js *teach
Joshua Ong that’s the only thing you correct?
*It was to teach us that we shouldn’t drink a lot of alcohol
I just discovered that a usual hallucination for shampane are “pink elephants” and blue mice(which maybe symbolize timothy)
Oh man. You found the highest quality version of Dumbo that I've seen. I'd love to watch this looking so clear and beautiful. The scene is trippy, but it's really awesome, and you can tell they had fun with it. The song is fun as well, even if it's all a tad eerie.
On a side note, I just subscribed. Stumbled across a different video and after watching two more, I gotta say, you have a great perspective. :)
Welcome to the party! I'm happy you appreciate my perspective. I own Dumbo on Bluray; it's really impressive how great the classics can look! Thanks for watching!
You see a lot of weird when you're under the influence
Thank you! This pink elephant scene always bothered me along with the Heffalumps and Woozles song in Winnie the Pooh. They actually gave me nightmares when I was really young but as I got older they more weirded me out than anything. Do you think the Heffalumps and Woozles song has a meaning to? Please make a video on it love your Channel
I was thinking about Heffalumps and Woozles while making this and I have to look into that as well... especially since I have never made a Winnie The Pooh video before. Also, I'm happy you're enjoying the content on my channel! Thanks for watching!
Heffalumps and Woozles are very contrundulled. Idk the rest of the words to the song..................................
The Heffalumps are my favorite characters and I felt that way since I was really young
Super Mikuo No. I'm talking about old school Winnie the Pooh when Tigger first comes to the hundred acre woods and makes a bunch of noise and Pooh has scary day dreams about what could be outside, not the newer movie with Lumpy, I love Lumpy. I still have a Lumpy stuffed animal on a shelf in my room.
Gwen Couv I was thinking of that one to, I really like everything involving heffalumps
When you stop what you're doing cause you've been waiting for this video😊.
I'm glad you have been excitedly waiting to see it! Thanks for watching!
omg, Issac, your dancing is on point!
Thank you for much. I do my best! Thanks for watching!
have you ever been so drunk you flew
Interesting theory worth talking of, Timothy’s back Story, why was the Ringmaster able to hear him speak? And perhaps maybe even a backstory as to why Dumbo has massive ears, bigger than an average African Elephant.
CuriousUserX90 Plus Even Though Elephants Are Afraid Of Mice, Since Dumbo Is A Baby One Why Isn't He Afraid Of Timothy? Maybe My Explanation Is That Timothy Must Have Told Him He Was Cute Or Something!
Curtis Davis For some help, it is possible Dumbo has a birth abnormality or that he just has large ears as a child but will grow out of it as he ages. As far as why he isn't scared of the mouse well neither is the mother. He's a nice guy and maybe it is meant to portray the good and the bad and also the way in which ignorant characters view harmless things. Timothy can talk to the Ringmaster because in almost all Disney movies mice can talk to people lol
Pink Elephant is an old skool expression for being drunk. The whole scene was a metaphor for dumbo being blasted into orbit, and thus the reason their drunk asses ended up in a tree.
Your dancing is so funny
Thank you so much! Thanks for watching!
If there is a live action Dumbo, I vote Issac join the cast. He'd fit right with those moves. 😆
I would be game! I would need Tim Burton to cast me. Thanks for watching!
Wotso Videos Channel your inner Depp and Bonahm Carter and you're in.
I have always been mesmerized by that scene. It's poetic somehow. You've done a great job dissecting that.
it's pretty clear that Jumbo Jr. is drunk in the movie. I mean the movie spells it out with the drunken clowns in the background and Jumbo Jr's facial expression and the way his muscles seem to relax almost like he's had a bottle of wine.
I never considered that it could be Absinthe but it makes sense to me. I don't get the sense that the clowns are particularly happy with their job.
Your channel is so underrated
I really appreciate you saying that! Hopefully I just keep growing! Thanks for watching!
Wotso Videos can't believe you replied😱😱😱😃😃😃😃
Its 100% a metaphor for being drunk, beautiful and frightening all at the same time
You think the song is creepy in english? You don’t know how creeped out I was with the spanish version 😥

Cool video as always! But please do Gil’s Backstory!
Definitely is coming soon! Thanks for watching!
The expression "voir des éléphants roses" (to see pink elephants) is an idiomatic phrase that originated in France in the early 1900s. The segment might have been in a way inspired by it!
Since I was a kid, I always loved both the Pink Elephants and the Heffalumps and Woozels scenes. I was scared and confused, but also very excited.
i loved this part as a kid and i like it now. this should be nothing to those who had their fair share of nightmares during sleep. This is ART!!
Since Dumbo is basically drunk during this scene, he's actually seeing this in his mind. It's all of his emotions taking shape, fear, sorrow and anxiety to name a few. It's one big crazy hallucination created by Dumbo's hidden emotions. He's all alone in the world. He's parents are gone, the other elephants have shunned him and he feels lost.
True, but it was never confirmed if he was seeing the same thing Dumbo was.
I've always been freaked out by this scene, too (and still am).
Who was the spirit in the black cauldron, And who is the Horned King?
Great question. I really want to talk about The Black Cauldron at some point. Thanks for watching!
The part with you dancing was hilarious! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Honestly I believe this is the best analysis anyone could have done for this scene. I imagine this must have been a challenge, so kudos to you Isaac for bringing some thoughtful insight to one of Disney's most bizarre sequences.
Thank you so much Lauren. I did my best to be as thorough as possible. Thanks for watching!
The sequence pertains to Dumbo's wish to belong. The hallucination is of a community, a unit of elephants doing all these magical, fanciful things, and the tone of this musical number is menacing and off-putting because Dumbo's been made to feel he doesn't belong. That's the character-driven purpose of the sequence, in addition to the pragmatic reasons Isaac addressed.
His dancing in this video is literally how I dance. At any event. Including my Senior Prom.
Same. You get it Ida!
the scene was more like some animators portofolio, that got him the job at Desney
This scene creeped the hell out of me
All good points, but also keep in mind: The Pink Elephant is a common trope connected to Delirium Tremens (think the Green Fairy and Absinthe). I think Disney wanted to connect the two as it was an elephant focused movie and all too easy to add in this connection, all the while giving the animators the freedom to express themselves with the current creative trends (which, as you mentioned, was Surrealism).
😱 so nice to finally have an answer to this mystery! The Pink Elephants scene always made me want to hide, but you've got me craving a rewatch! Maybe even add a Pink Elephant inspired cosplay to this year's line up 🙈
💜 Also you're dancing @ 2:40 made my day. Marry me.
I'm glad I could answer the question! I'm glad I could also brighten your day.
As for the proposal... I would at least like to be taken out to dinner first haha Thanks for watching!
Can you do Ludwig Von Drake's full story?
I really want to start making content on all of the original characters! Thanks for watching!
"Seeing Pink Elephants" is a euphemism for drunken hallucinations. It makes sense since Dumbo, the titular character, is an elephant.
It really just seems to me that the song is just puns.
I always thought of the nightmare as Dumbo's feelings as to how the world must see him. I did just now let my mind wonder further into crazy town, and am now choosing to believe that flying is only the beginning of Dumbo's reality-warping powers.
Do kaa full story
A lot of people seem interested in Kaa. Definitely will have to make that video at some point. Thanks for watching!
I think this song just went over my head when I was little, I just liked the bright colors. Even when I watched it when I was little older, I think I always attributed it to an alcohol-induced dream. It reminds me of the dream Pooh has about the Heffalumps and Woozles...(even though that one is fear induced)
*_A BIG LIPPED ALLIGATOR MOMENT!!_*
Isaac, please explain the following: In Dumbo, the magic feather is revealed to be a gag to help Dumbo gain self confidence and he no longer uses it at the end of the movie. However, in Dumbo’s Circus during the opening theme when Dumbo is flying, he is holding the magic feather in his trunk
.
It was a sentimental reminder of the talisman “good luck” symbol (much like a rabbit’s foot or four-leaf clover) which initially inspired Dumbo to trust his instincts and use his confidence. Although he lost the feather at the end of the film it can be assumed that he and Timothy were able to find it again and keep it as a souvenir of that life-altering event where he became a star in everyone’s eyes. Curiously, Timothy does not continue to have a role in the “Dumbo’s Circus” tv series made years later. The last we saw of him in the original film finale:the news headlines showed him achieving managerial and contract-making status …he was going to be in the proposed made for video “Dumbo 2” sequel which was initially planned but later shelved during development.
Your dancing made my day that deserves an award 100%
This is one of your best videos so far
Oh wow thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Have A Good Day to you too Mr. Issac, Awesome Videos and background Music By the Way!😂
Thank you! Thanks for watching!
Kid, you are amazing - a vocabulary, research, intelligent conversation - I love it! Most critics bore me to death, buy your enthusiasm is infectious and needed today! Talk about a special moment.
HOWEVER, one thing you're missing is where the concept of Pink Elephants comes from. In the 40's when folks got into alcohol, alcoholism becoming more common, alcoholic running out of booze, caused tough withdrawals, Delerium Tremors, I believe. the PE slang became one of about a dozen usual hallucinations, i.e., to see Pink Elephants. Someone who sawPink Elephants was slang for a drunk and experienced at seeing, among other much more gruesome things, PINK ELEPHANTS.
I'm rarely drawn to anything anyone as young as you has to say, but YOU are special I will subscribe. You picked one of my very favorite films. I was an abused kid, taken from my mom when I was four. I saw Dumbo at 5. I cannot tell you what emotions tightened my throat as a kid watching the "Baby Mine" number. I WAS Dumbo, made to feel worthless, made to be alone, lonely. Even my ears were big and my family taunted me with the nickname "Dumbo". This film, made with Disney's oldest, most reliable animators (the experienced cream of the crop) made this what it was, a marvelous creative extravaganza, which still inspires me as an artist today, as it has all my life. THANK YOU!
Dumbo yesss! 😍 Thank you Issac 😝
And I agree the scene kinda still creeps me out tbh but the rest of the movie is great
My pleasure! I'm glad I could bring you this! Thanks for watching!
Now I know why isaac Carlson never dances in in his videos
Dumbo got some acid, Dumbo opened his third eye, Dumbo bridges the gap between reality and realisation.
Please do Gil’s backstory I really want to see his background
I gotta do that soon! I have some ideas I'm dying to do, but I'm sure I will get to it. Thanks for watching!
Now that you talked about it. That actually made so much sense and yeah I would too agree that seeing pink elephants on parade is much crazier and insane than seeing an elephant fly if you ask me
The Pink Elephant sequence when I saw it when I was a kid, course Dumbo was one of my all time favorite Disney movies as a kid. But whenever it came to the Pink Elephant sequence, luckily I wasn't scared however I was entertained by some parts of the sequence, but overall I thought it was kind of weird.
The Pink Elephant sequence from Dumbo I thought was one of the weirdest sequences I ever saw from a Disney movie, to me nowadays I thought of it as kind of like a surreal psychedelic creation that Walt Disney and his animators have ever done. Way before psychedelic was well known to the world in the 60s, so I fine the pink elephants sequence as one of the first psychedelic creations and that came from Walt Disney Animation.
But later on after its main theme song, it did have beautiful and catchy music when they showed the two pink elephants dancing. And then really catching a Beat to the music, as it got catchy and then oddly enough they turn into exciting trains, race cars, jet skiing and bobsleds.
It was all weird, but I thought it was kind of fun to watch even when the entire sequence turns out really bonkers
Surprisingly that scene was the reason why I was scared of the dark as a little kid, especially with that part "Look out, look out, they're walking around the bed on their head".
As I mentioned in another comment I posted, the elephant who witnesses the upside-down braided paraders is shown in a bed with castor wheels, suggesting that he is even more of a scared victim possibly in a hospital or mental facility!
😂😂 I love your dance moves!!! This part and when he flies in the circus are my favorite parts in the movie.🐘🐘 Can you do a theory on the lost boys from Peter pan??
This was a whole lsd trip with someone very fixated on pink elephants
Your dancing has made me happy! Lol! The sequence totally freaked me out as a child.
I always took the drunken sequence for what we see at the end, where it looks like some of the elephants take off flying. Dumbo imitates them in his drunken state, and that's how he ends up in the tree with Timothy. If he hadn't had the hallucination, he wouldn't have tried what should have been physically impossible for an elephant.
You’re right, and his failure in real life to springboard and soar in the air to the top of the elephant pyramid probably infused him with such guilt, discomfort and anxiety….so it makes sense in his dream that he would try again ambitiously to soar to the top, reach the highest of heights, etc…please see the other comment I posted which mentions this, because I think it might have been an interesting alternate concept to show a “pyramid” of the pink elephants at the scene’s finale, rather than the transportation vehicles, and show Dumbo himself determined to jump to the top or even soar over it. On the other hand, removing Dumbo and Timothy offscreen was a clever story twist as it turned out, because we’re so immersed and distracted by being involved with our own subjective views and thoughts as we “share” the hallucination and the overall unexpected punchline is seeing our protagonists up in the tree is just as much a surprise to us as it is to them, along with the initial surprise felt by the crows whose normal “turf” has been invaded and intruded upon in a most unexpected way!
Dumbo is one of the few leading Disney animated characters that doesn't talk.
Amazing and surprising analysis ... Very delighted, and it keeps turning new corners. This is a breathtaking and original take - and what makes it so powerful is that it’s persuasive and spot on. I’ve never heard anyone discuss this sequence with such insight and authority. Wow! GREAT JOB!
Not going to lie, this video was so hard to watch because the pink elephants on parade still gives me the creeps 😂
I used to watch the pink elephant song every single day as a toddler
Did you enjoy it?
... Am I the only one who WASN'T traumatized by the Pink Elephants as a kid? I actually really enjoyed that scene. I still love the music from that scene.
At 3:20, I think that this scene is showing how Dumbo is trying to blend in with the other elephants but isn't able to. Dumbo is the light pink elephant trying to mimic the elephants movements from under him.
Wrong! As a kid (im from 86), my SUB-conscious picked up something in that scene which my conscious could NOT grasp!
Looking back as an adult i watched it back again and at the exact moment i felt uncomfortable i repeated the part a few times: the part where the piramids appear the camel walks, turns into a serpent(demonology) then into a bellydancer (seduction), then into an eye (which is symbol for "all-seeing")....then i watched the whole scene again and understood this was more then "just some art"
I know people will say/think "ah yess this dude is far gone"....but ask yourselves this question just for logics: *why are these things in a CHILDREN'S animation-movie?? Children who would NEVER understand the meaning of what was shown? What is the use then? Why show it that way?* 🤔
Do Chernabog’s full story
YIKES!!!!! The pink elephants scene still gives me nightmares..
When I saw this film as a kid, the pink elephants SCARED ME SO MUCH. I was utterly TERRIFIED of them.. No idea why, but the hypnotic dancing and the music.. Really freaked me the hell out..
Pink elephants felt like I was on a acid trip
That scene really freaked me out when I was little, just the appearances of the elephants with their soulless eyes, the creepy voices of the singers, and the music.
That was sooooo traumatizing when I was little
Do more Dumbo Theories, this was awesome.
Will do! I'm happy you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
I like how Wotso sometimes acts like a dad trying to be cool like look at those dance moves!
I remember how back then I was not understanding in what is going on here until now I realize that this is suppose to represent how drunk dumbo is right now.
Even as a kid, I was like 'what the freak am I watching!?'
Your dance made the theory 1000x better
I almost wasn't sure where to include that but I'm happy I did! Thanks for watching!
You just made my day😍😁
That s a very great analysis of the Pink Elephants scene, it helps us see what elephants can do and be and help us to believe anything is possible
Thank you! Thanks for watching!
You're dancing is the cutest! Brought a huge smile to my face☺️
I agree with your assessments but there's a bit more. As one of the commenters noted, this is a way of depicting not only hallucinations brought on by alcohol but it is also a representation of what happens when drunks stop drinking and experience delirium tremens. It's part of the withdrawal process. Here, however, it's a hallucination brought on by "bad liquor", as George Bailey thought he'd had after meeting Clarence, the angel.
The significant part was the Disney characteristic of not wanting to be thought of as glorifying bad behavior like overdrinking, albeit by accident. In Pinocchio, the trip to Pleasure Island resulted in paying a horrible price. Here, in Dumbo, they have a little fun but pay for it with a terrible hallucination. It was something many films were careful to do in that era. Even now, in horror movies with teens, who always dies first? The couple that people don't like because they're jerks or something similar. Sometimes, even Hollywood has a conscience. Sometimes.
Yep, you dancing is literally the must fun part of this video!!! Loved it!!
Oh thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
I haven't seen Dumbo in YEARS.. I've got to rewatch it again soon lol
yes I shall always dance like this. hahah nice video as always those elephants did really freak me out as a child!!
Moral of the story: Have an issue? Take hallucinogens haha!
2019: ahaha ahaha it’s a giraffe!
Thank you! Dumbo is my favorite Disney Film of all time! And I figured one of the theories to the sequence concerning Dumbo flying off-screen. Your videos are so great! Keep going man!
it's kinda funny to me how this scene could easily be put next to other 'bad trip' scenes such as those from movies like fear and loathing in las vegas, trainspotting or hell, even climax. i love this kind of scenes though, they are always visually incredible and kind of a flex from the animators/vissual fx artists
This scene made me pretty uncomfortable as a kid and now that I’m older, I feel even more uncomfortable looking at it more than ever.
Oh my gosh Isaac what the heck are you doing
That dancing tho
I just want to know how Dumbo and Timothy had the same hallucination.🤔
I like how he starts dancing to the song.. I once started break dancing to the song while babysitting
Great work!! I'd love to see some Great Mouse Detective theories!!! And maybe some about The Black Cauldron!!
I have only gotten part way through Great Mouse Detective so I'll have to finish it. Both will be discussed eventually I'm sure! Thanks for watching!
I always had a weird thing with all the scenes where the elephants would get bigger and bigger until they'd explode....namely the scene where their trunks merge as one trumpet bell, the scene where they wrap around the whole screen, and the end where they all collide into each other and explode. I'd hate it....but love it at the same time.
