  • Edited highlight reel from a recent 2 hour Twitch stream I did where I created a few patches from scratch on the 3rd Wave, with some improv and sequencer recordings using only built in FX (I think there was a tiny bit of Supermassive reverb on the DAW track). I tried my best to edit out the boring parts, including where I was typing/chatting to Twitch viewers.
    I included some previously made custom patches and sequencer demos.
    Everything you hear are custom patches.
    00:00 Patch from scratch
    09:40 Making an analog patch for the 2nd part
    14:32 3rd part analog bass sound
    18:30 4th part making a bell/keys sound
    20:55 Custom patch/sequence made earlier
    22:44 2nd custom patch/sequence demo
    24:22 3rd custom patch/sequence demo
    25:09 4th custom patch/sequencer demo (single measure)
    25:34 Demo of previously made analog pad sound (custom)
    26:37 Demo of custom TD style keys/pluck patch
    28:05 Demo of custom SFX patch
    28:42 New multi-part design from scratch (1st part)
    34:14 2nd part/voice design
    37:44 3rd part/voice design
    40:03 Sequencer recording each part to make a track
    41:20 Recording 3rd part to sequencer
    44:58 Recording 2nd part to sequencer
    45:50 Adding synced stereo delay and reverb to 2nd part
    46:23 Adding FX to 3rd part
    46:48 Improv higher part/bell 3rd part to sequencer
    47:48 4th part design
    51:16 Recording 4th part into sequencer
    52:48 Finished track (this is a single multi-part patch)
    54:03 New sound design from scratch (SFX)
    01:05:43 New patch from scratch (Ambient pad)
    01:14:05 Recording new pad into sequence track (unquantized)
    01:15:22 Creating 2nd part (analog lead)
    01:19:18 Recording 2nd part into sequencer (unquantized)
    01:22:00 Making 3rd part analog bass
    01:25:55 Recording 3rd part into sequencer (unquantized)
    01:27:30 Recording Parameter changes on 3rd part/track
    01:29:26 Finished track

    What I feel sets the 3rd wave apart is having 4 layers of 3 oscillators . Not sure how polyphony gets used but the sound I'm hearing here in your sequences are deep and varied. The analog filters are so nice. Also , being able to construct your own wavetable from various waveforms of up to 64 single cycles, is really nice to be able to do right on the hardware.

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  11 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks! Yeah it's a very powerful synth. The voices get split equally each time you activate a new layer/part, so if you activate the first two you'll be at 12 voices per part I believe. You also have 2 FX per part, and a sequencer track. I didn't even seem to hit any limits in these demos.

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  11 месяцев назад +1

      I've never owned an M, but I've heard it a bunch and I think it sounds pretty nice. It has the same limitation that I dislike on the 3rd Wave though, and that's a lack of waveshaping over the actual wavetables, like soft wavetable synths have had forever i.e. Windowing, Mirror, Pulse, Half-Pulse and tons of other ways to shape and mangle the wavetables. I really don't understand the reason for not having these options, since they existed in very old synths like the Z3ta+ and Serum

      Thanks :) It definitely has a sound that won't appeal to everyone, and the real strength of the synth is when it's doing dirty, gritty, crunchy stuff. It can be very soft, warm and analog too and I tried to show a bit of everything here.

    Ok, miles away, jim danaker AND YOU, have convinced me I can sell three synths and buy this one! I’ll end up with a Waldorf iridium keyboard and the 3rd wave and my Roland FA-08.
    Seriously, The United States is kicking ass with synth companies! The Groove Synthesis guys have hit a home run spanning DECADES!
    You really are a synth genius sir and a genius deserves an instrument like this!
    I am wondering if the Iridium will be redundant next to the 3rd wave.

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  25 дней назад +1

      Thank you! I hope you enjoy the 3rd Wave. It in no way makes the Iridium redundant though, I still own two iridium's (desktop and keyboard), actually there isn't another hardware synth that exists that would ever make the iridium redundant, it simply has too many different synthesis and sampling options. The 3rd Wave and Iridium work nicely together

    Thank you, but the "original" was very interesting because it showed how you managed the synth, also when there where problems.

      The stream where I had problems I completely deleted from Twitch, this highlight reel is from last night where I had 0 problems, I've only really removed the parts where the audio is dead as I'm inputting patch names or chatting to the audience. The 3rd Wave is an expensive synth, but imo it's not overpriced when one looks at and understands the features and just how power the synth is. I think there's been quite a bit of misunderstanding from some as to what you're actually getting for the price. I don't think it's really comparable to other synths when it comes to the sound. The 3rd Wave is very unique, though it can certainly cover a lot of other sonic areas i.e. more modern wavetable sound, VA and some FM etc. You get a lot more synthesis options with the Iridium/Quantum, but if I were to compare it purely on wavetable capabilities I think the 3rd Wave is far beyond the basic wavetable implementation on the Iridium/Quantum, but again, it's not a fair comparison because the 3rd Wave isn't really competing, it's capable of very unique sounds that set it apart from other synths, including the M, and should be looked at like a super modern take on the PPG Wave with the bonus of being quite an incredible sounding VA/hybrid rivalling fully analog synths thanks to its Prophet 5/10 analog filter (plus SEM digital SVF) and an extremely well done analog circuit emulation.

      As I wrote at the live stream, the aoubd remembers me Propaganda and I love it. It'a very direct, with a strong and musical presence. Inspiring.
      I had never this impression with the Waldorfs, for me they sound more digital and discrete.
      The 3rd Wave is like a contrast to the smooth and elegant sound of a Juno or a Super6. The Modwave seems nearer...
      Your free playing is giving an excellent impression of the sound character of this synth and gives me more "the taste" of it as the usual reviews.
      Well done.... you GAS provocator 😂
      The 3rd wave is an excellent add to your setting. I am already looking forward to your next compositions.

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  11 месяцев назад

      @@LagrangePointD I think I probably have too many soft/warm/analog synths in my studio, so more digital synths fit in better for me. Plus, I'm just more of a fan of digital and hybrid synths anyway, that's where the excitement and interesting/unique sounds and sound design potential is and Waldorf have been doing a great job in that space IMO.

  • @sK3LeTvM1

    I am the lucky owner of both a Waldorf XTK and a Waldorf Q Phoenix. Both have respectively 30 and 32 voices. Both are WT synths and direct ancestors of the PPG Wave 2.3 and the Waldorf Wave which can be heard immediately as soon as you play them. (I did own a 2.3 and Wave back in the days) At first, I was planning to sell both Waldorf Q & XTK synths in order to buy a 3Rd Wave. But upon closer investigation (and remembering the mistake of selling the Wave and PPG a long time ago) I wouldn't swap either the XTK or Q for the 3rd Wave. Imho, it is way more interesting to buy those older Waldorf synths (as they probably will go up in price) instead of a single 3rd Wave (which will lose value if offered 2nd hand - check i.e. the first Quantums or UDO's...) Sound wise, the Q and XTK are comparable to the 3rd Wave as they use similar WT synth engines and quality wise I can not say the 3rd Wave sounds 'better'. (whatever 'better' sounds means) But no doubt, the 3rd Wave is a remarkable synth of course. Now the question is what the Behringer Wave will do, and if they succeed, it will be a very strong competitor to the overpriced 3rd Wave... If I wouldn't own the XTK and Q, for sure I would buy either a Quantum or a 3rd Wave.

    • @marcopulega7036

      Sorry but PPG Is the First ancestors of Waldorf sinths . Apart this i think that XT (i have one immaculate), and Q certainly not grow up in price but the inverse. The old analog/digital Monsters likes PPG 2.3 and Wave are now in the Empirium and never fall down. I have sold years ago a perfect CS 80 and now you must pay, If you find One for minimum 60000€. Because these ones are old , heavy , not replicated with unique components and sounds . Instead XT, Q and are only digital , apart analog filter of Quantum( not so good). Best regards

    What do you think of it doing Analog style patches versus a Summit ? Seems much brighter ....

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  11 месяцев назад +2

      So far I feel like, at least comparing the VA/analog, the 3rd Wave to me sounds better. The filter I can say is absolutely better, Summit can't really compete vs a real Prophet 5/10 filter, but I also think the circuit emulation and oscillators on the 3rd Wave are better too, not by a huge amount, but the oscillators are probably going to get better with firmware updates enabling the oscillators to free run. On the wavetable side, not that you asked, 3rd Wave is far ahead there's no real fair comparison. The 3rd Wave can be a lot brighter I think especially with Wavetable smoothing turned off, it has an amazing buzzy/highend fizz that I love...I'm not sure if this affects the analog waveforms though, I didn't test that.

    • @cronenbergj
      @cronenbergj 11 месяцев назад

      @@stateazureyeah....the wavetable is far beyond the Summit capabilities. Curious...because although it has a orophet filter, from the few Va style patches i heard, seems more kinda like a Oberheim ...fizzy, gritty cuttingand bright than something like a Prophet ... i also have a Quantum and the wavetables side does not sound too much like it even using Quantum Analog filters... this seems angrier, mire in you face , but also mire vintage and less Futuristic/experimental. I would never call the Quantum Vintage sounding:)

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  11 месяцев назад +1

      @@cronenbergj The second filter is a state variable filter modelled after the SEM filter, this might be what you've heard. It's the digital filter, but I think it also sounds really great. I was never very impressed with the Quantum's analog filters, which is why I sold my Quantum long ago when the Iridium's appeared. The extra voices and desktop form factor interested me a lot, and those filters just weren't good enough for me over Iridium's very decent analog modelled versions.

    • @cronenbergj
      @cronenbergj 11 месяцев назад

      @@stateazure yeah...doing Analog /va sounds is not really the Quantum strength. The Summit is much more Analog (Rolandy or Prophetty...kinda) sounding than it....and the Analog Drive Gain Distorcions it has helps a lot. The Quantum now however can do 16 voices too, like iridium, even mixing 8 analog voices with 8 digital ones.

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  11 месяцев назад +1

      @@cronenbergj Yeah I agree with you, Summit's strength is definitely analog sounds. I'm aware of the Quantum's firmware that gave it the possibility of 16 voices, I was part of the beta testing team at the time. The Iridium/Quantum is my favourite hybrid synth because of all the different synthesis and options you have for sound design, but it's just not exceptional in any one area, it's a good allrounder and the perfect desert island synth. If I could only have one synth it would be the Iridium or Quantum.
