Firstly, You paper has to be smooth like ivory, bristol or mixed media papers. Secondly keep layering pencils slowly and use a lighter color to blend the darker.

I am having so much trouble with the gradient and where to place the shadows and then transition to a highlight. Is there an easier way to get a grasp on this? I am trying to color a puff sleeve and I do have a reference picture, but it is not working out, because there are so many folds!
