  • Fall Edition! Grow your woodworking business with "smalls"! Ready for the latest trends??? Let's break down some more builds!
Often, smaller items are looked over by new builders looking to make a name for themselves because they are looking for "that one build" that they can sell for a ton of money. They aren't considering the cost of the build and the time spent making it. Ultimately any business comes down to profit margins. I'll give you a few examples of how selling items that anyone can afford can generate crazy sales with minimal cost of goods sold!
Sometimes we overthink things when the most profitable items we are looking past. Let's change that.

I'm new to the channel. This is exciting and makes me want to cry at the same time. I am a mom, on the downside of that age hill, I've been training dogs for 48 years and still do for my own but not professionally anymore. I have 5 imported longcoat German Shepherds.
But woodworking is my hobby. Over the many years, I've collected a nice amount of wood 🪵, oak, cedars, cherry, walnut, mahogany, and purple heart. I had a friend who worked at a place that made custom hardwood doors, and he gave me boxes of scrap wood. I had some trees die, and I dug up the root balls.... a plum, apricot, several aspens, and several apple trees. I saved a nice amount of the trunk as well....allowed it to dry.
I do a lot of wood turning, scroll work, carving both power and hand, and some burning. I also just like to make ....stuff!!!! I got a job at a hardware store. Once my kids got into high school just so I could use the HUGE discount to buy tools.
Now.....we are moving over 1000 miles. But.....my husband said we are not taking my wood stash. He already tossed my dried tree trunks and root balls. No to my big lathe, big saws, big benches. 🤯🤯🤯 ugggg
I looked at your videos and want to get to work making things, but I'm supposed to be packing. 😢
I promise, once I get settled in my new work shop, I'm going to be busy turning wood into fabulous things. Your ideas are super cool. ✏️🔨🪚 🩹 ⚰️ (the coffin is for a certain husband if he goes back on his promise to replace my stuff)😂😂😂😂 I do really love him, and I get his point, the moving truck will only hold so much stuff.
    Sorry, I vented😊

So I’ve been watching you for a little over a week now, I found your channel after I decided to start making hand router signs, so I went out and bought a inexpensive router, $34 @ harbor freight, and like you like to use, fence pickets are common usage for small sign making, then I found you, you started giving me more ideas for other stuff to make and side hustle, so I went back to harbor freight, and got myself a 10” tablesaw, and a Bauer 20v brad nailer, speaking of the nailer, harbor freight is running a special right now, buy the 20v charger, $39, and buy a 20v 5 amp hr battery, $59 and get the tool free, and the nailer is normally $99. So I really want to thank you for lighting a fire under me, to hustle.

Idea on the pumpkin sitters/plaques: make the back boards into rustic tombstone sitters for Halloween.
Cut them out just the same as here, only difference would be to not attach a stem, maybe paint them up a differently, and the sayings written on them. So if you have any that didn't sell as Fall décor, maybe pop the stem off and repaint, then market them for October. Or just cut out extras when making the pumpkins and set them aside to make tombstones.
It would be really cool if they were reversible, with a somehow detachable stem, so you could display the pumpkin side with stem now, then pop it off for Halloween and flip it around to the tombstone side for next month, pop the handle back on and flip it back around for November.
Hope this makes sense, there's a reason I'm not a writer:)

A good idea for the top of a pumpkin is split up a piece of fire wood into half inch wedges. You can rough up the top part and it looks like kinda real in a way

I made two "towel" racks 20 yrs ago for my parents.1 stands in the corner about 4 ft tall and has towels LOL hanging on it in the kitchen. The other is 2ft wide x 7 ft long and hangs flat from the ceiling above the island as a pot rack made from closet pole and 5/4 x 4

On those pumpkin plaques with the phrases on them,,, You could cut different shapes (like Turkeys or Christmas trees) drill a small hole in the handle and run a piece of cord thru the hole to hang them as different holiday decorations! BUILD CHEAP, SELL BIG!! Can't wait to get my shop together, just moved in last week! The ''electrician'' left me ALOT of work to do, half the lights don't even work!!

I used to build benches almost exactly like that. Couldn't sell them for $25. I made 12 of them and they are all over the house.

I just finished one of those squirrel feeder chairs last night. Made it out of scrap tounge and groove blue pine. Any suggestions on a finish? I like the natural look of blue pine.

How do you get the distressed look and also you mentioned about the pumpkin serving trays food based finish what about the painted ones do they make a good grade paint?
    Thank you
I promised myself I would stick to only watching your videos because I get overwhelmed with jumping around all the other Woodworking videos
You explain everything and have the build list and plans available to purchase.
Thanks again for all you do

Your pumpkin looks awesome and their pumpkins are lame. I'm talking about the one you made for your bench. Super cute. And I love the bench being actually useful as a bench. Why would they make a bench that isn't useful as a bench?? These stores are crazy.

Am I right in thinking that for the first item we would have to do a glue up of a number of pine boards to get the right size of rectangle before traicing and cutting out the pumpkin shape? Appreciate any input from anyone on this. Thank you.

Can you collect some of this into like a document to look at? Loving the channel and videos but its a lot of content to filter through to find the stuff I can do and/or am interested in doing myself. It would be super awesome to have some of this information in a more browseable format.

I'm in the UK. We are still in the process of importing Halloween.
Can someone explain to me what a 'pumpkin sitter' is ? What does it represent or do ?

    • @BethyS13
      @BethyS13 8 месяцев назад +1

Hi John, it's also called a shelf sitter, so just a decorative piece that will sit on a shelf independently. If you have wood thick enough to stand up by itself your possibilities are endless 😁 one thing I make is blocks of approx 4x4x2" and wood burn sayings/baby names/wedding dates on them. I sometimes add a hanger on the back or hanger attachments in a bag with it so people can choose how to have it in their home

@@BethyS13 Hi Beth, thanks for your reply.. I thought it had some cultural meaning in your part of the world, but now i understand its just another shelf 'dust collector' that is purchased on a whim.. Family and friends are always buying and giving us trinkets . In fact out lounge now reassembles a seaside giftshop.. I prefer 'clean lines' personally. I'd like to box them all up and get rid but that could bring political problems with family and friends. .
I'm rather torn about churning this stuff out.. I want the money but I'd be adding to the mountains of the very clutter that I hate !
First World problem Beth ! 😁
      Regards, John
