I was able to buy a used one a couple of years ago and I love it. I have a friend who plays at a Silver Dollar City in Branson who has a 24 fret model with a metal tone ring and when I got mine and he played it, he was blown away by how great it sounded. I play sixties folk music and tune it down to E flat as John did because it suits my voice better, and the tone it has at that tuning is pretty amazing. Have tried a lot of different banjos since I started playing back in ‘67 and I know I’ll never have to buy another, because this one fulfills my needs perfectly. Thanks Deering.

Thanks for writing and we are happy to hear that your Hartford banjo continues to perform so well. It is truly one of the banjos that get better and better the more you play it and the longer you have it.

I bought my Deering John Hartford back in 2008 and it still surprises me. The volume and tone that comes out is beautiful, especially when I learn new tunes and jam with other people, my John Hartford stands up very well against other bronze tone ring banjos, and I swear the more I play this banjo the louder it gets. It was truly an investment well spent! Thank you Deering Co.!

Jens is just an amazing artist and I really respect his impressions and opinions on the various Deering Banjo's. I own a Deering Black Diamond banjo, which I don't believe is produced anymore, but have received compliments on the sound whenever it is played.

That Hartford has a unique sound, reminiscent of very old banjos many are looking for and sometimes heard on studio recordings.

I wish they would explain the price increases for each model, such as "this is the goodtime entry level.......", When you get to the $2000 models, what are you getting?

My 34th birthday is coming up and I'm ready to finally pull the trigger and buy myself a Hartford. My wife's going to kill me but I've had my eyes on one for a couple years now and feel it's time I get myself a high end banjo and this is it.

    Hi Richard,
Thanks for your interest. Unfortunately the tooling for a Hartford tenor is not in place.
We will work on that. :-)

Iv been playing a Boston 5 string for many years. I put a thicker bridge on it and it runs with the big boys in a jam.

I'm curious what the difference in sound is between the 24 fret wood ring and the metal ring. That'd be an interesting video to watch and listen to.

Would you folks ever consider making this in a tenor banjo model?

the first thing you should have said at the begining of this video is that john hartford was one of the best banjo pickers to ever walk the planet earth, not only that he was a supper good guy, he wrote one of the best songs in the history of music,{ gentle on my mind } i miss him every day, now go on with the rest of the video and i will listen.. my 2 cents worth..
