(Y + 8) = 3( X + 4)^2 and look the value of X and Y that would make what is in the brackets equal to zero, hence Y=--8 and X= --4 (Y --5) = (1/2)( X --3)^2 and look the value of X and Y that would make what is in the brackets equal to zero, hence Y= +5 and X= +3

Oh my gosh this helped so much. Algebra 1 is coming back to bite me in the butt this year in Algebra 2 so this helped clarify a lot of things.

in my book, it says that if |a| (absolute value of a) > 1, then it's stretched. if 0>|a| >1, the graph is compressed
Yeah I think so, it makes more logical sense as well. I haven't really looked at the definitions in my textbook, but I'm pretty sure you're correct.
The compression/stretch is vertical, not horizontal. The compression squishes the graph down, making it wider. The stretch makes it skinnier.
