The A string needs to stretch out. It will go out of tune and sound sharp and will need to be tuned up again and again until it settles; just like violin strings. The A string is the highest tension string. The neck will also need to get used to sitting. Apart from that, it sounds immaculate for a cheaper cello. The older the fiddle (or cello in this case), the better the tune. You might get a surprise in a couple of years time. Early days yet!!
No wonder my cello sounded so squeaky when changing pitch and strings. I was trying a variety of budget strings on my student cello. Looks like I found a dirt cheap one that sounds like a toy guitar on my cello. Thank you for this! It's less reaponsive on cheaper/lower quality strings.
Nicely performed experiment. Sometimes with this kind of videos (comparing sounds) it is difficult to hear a clear difference, but here it was clear and I could totally relate to or confirm your comments.
I am a cellist by trade. I teach at a middle school and have been using a Krutz 100 model (new this fall of 2024) to teach in front of the classes. It has already, in @6 months, begun to unravel at TWO points on the D string. Just shows how cheap and dangerous some of these strings can be. I will put a higher quality set on there and anticipate better safety and sound quality.
Very interesting. Glad you tried this out because I’ve been thinking of doing the same thing with my basic cello and seeing the result I’ll give it a go.
Pirastro Piranitos are reputed to be much much better than the typical cheap string set, but they're only about $88 per set in 2024. Maybe add a mellower A string. A is the least expensive string of the four, get a single expensive A string for 40 bucks. Use the C G and D Piranito from the Piranito set. You've now a much improved inexpensive Cello and in your case there's a spare A string.
I've tried the Magnicores, but think I like the Larsen A,D and Spirocore G,C better. Has anyone tried Rondo? I've heard they are nice. I really enjoyed this. I have students with cheap cellos. Always wondered what this change would do.
Don’t buy, many people don’t rent before they buy and when they buy a new instrument of any kind and price they give up learning and loose interest because it wasn’t as easy as the ideal picture they thought was nice 😄 sometimes does t matter so much whether it’s cheap or not, or whether it’s properly setup. It’s the human themselves where they’re willing to learn and advance in playing/learning. I’ve encountered many who buy cheap to expensive instruments to give up learning because it was “hard” and just collects dust in the corner of their house 😂
Okay. I guess it does matter LOL. Second sounds warmer, none of that annoying squeakiness that I hear on my own cello. But tbh both still sound good, especially if your skilled
hi, which intermidient cello would u suggest to buy in ur experiance ? i was looking into the Yamaha VC7SG but just an idea. Hard to chose without being able to try it .tnks;)
I have a little better cello (Yamaha VC5) with Kaplan strings ($200 set). My A string doesn't sound any better than your $400 strings. It's disappointed as I have already put in a new sound post and a Despaiu bridge.
i have done a lot of experiment with my harsh A string. in the end, it was all about the soundpost. buy a soundpost adjustment tool and start experimenting.
I was just looking into getting a second cello (Yamaha VC5) actually. still not sure about it as it would be an amazon order (can't try it first). My main cello is 5K so not sure I would enjoy it as a second cello if the sound is "dry". As for the A string, absolutely. I have made many adjustments with my luthier and it was worth every penny. He will experiment with the sound post and you can try it until you are happy. The whole process took about 30 minutes and he adjusted it about 8 times. Really worth the investment (which actually wasn't much given that they are not changing any pieces, they are just adjusting).
Hi there, i was actually thinking to buy the new VC7SG. Im just a beginner but i dont mind to spend a bit more to have something that ill keep it for long... Till now i was just renting one. Anyway since u have the 5 do u think its a good cello to buy ? or u have a better brand to suggest .. tnks :)
I think that statement about sounding like a beginner could be insulting. As a beginner with one year playing and the first grade under my belt, I would love to play and sound like the first part.
I don't understand, maybe I'm deaf😅, but I don't hear the difference. It's sound really deep for a cheap cello, a lot of obertones for the both sets of strings.
Sorry.. I don't agree with you, the strings 100 dollar are bright and crisp.. and ultimately it is the heart and soul of the individual player that makes the cello sing! Thank you anyway.. I have a Jarger A string and the rest are larsen, simply because at the time of replacement it's what I could afford, I would love to have all new top class strings can't afford at moment.. Jarger is harder on the finger yes! ❤
❓what’s the physical difference between a $100 and $1000 cello❓ Strings obviously. But what else? Nobody ever explains what about the cello is better or “more expensive” Is it made from different wood? Heavier, thicker wood? My daughter has one that is about $1200 it looks exactly like every other one. The 100k ones on other comparison vids look exactly the same.
Mostly the aging of the wood. Cheaper ones, the wood might be baked a bit, rather than naturally aged. That's one. Type of wood is another. Should be spruce top and back minimum .The other is handcrafted versus machined versus some combination of the two.

I hate beeing poor LMAO
That cat scared the crap out of me XD you didn't sound like a beginner, but they did sound very metalic. The $400 strings make it sound much fuller.

One has to also realise that it will take two/three years before a new cello, or a cello that hasn't been played for years to find its voice.
A $100 Cello may not wake up very much. There is likely very little voice to be found.

You’re welcome
@4:20 "strings are important" thanks LOL

Interesting contrast with a distinct improvement. However,, the cello still has a nasal quality.

Agree
Great advice. Danke schön, Herr Merkeli.

I used to own a Cecilio Cello but the A string sounded piercing, now I own a 2007 Franz Hoffman Cello
This was my main question these days thank youuu

Can some cello experts give me some advice on buying a cello for my son, I am debating between Samuel Shen and Samuel Eastman. Which one is better?
@Douglas James Professional Musician thanks
Where did you get a cello for this price?
Ebay most likely.
Cheapest ones on eBay are around $200 now. I'm not sure you could ever find one for $100 in 2021.
@@md93-z5e Amazon has $140 dollar ones
If you don’t mind me asking what’s your intro sound it’s so beautiful?
JS BACH Prelude from Suite 1 in G major for cello
I think it´s a plywood table . Your harmony table is not rounded all around . Thanks for sharing !
It is still mind-blowing how a cello can be made for US$100. I mean...
Well, that cello actually sounded very good for a 100$ cello :D Where did you get so cheap cello?
Change bridge
What is the brand of cello and brand of strings ?
Its probably a set of larson magnacore
Looks like Larsen Magnacore. The price also fits.
Helicore Strings are designed to make bowing on the Cello easier
How?
@@user-ok6ef9zn4f They're a tad bit thinner & they have a Steel Rope Core
Yeah. What brand? I use Pirastro Soloist strings which are fabulous and those are $300.
Looks like Larsen Magnacore They're about $400 and excellent.
@@maddie8415 Try Pirastro soloist
Spirocore C & G, Larsen D & A are my favorite 🤷
What’s the brand of string did you use (the $400 one)?
Oh my God, there's no answer from him...
He used Larsen
Looks like Larsen Magnacore. They're about $400 and excellent.
now put a $50 string set on a Million Dollar Cello......I bet I still make it sound like a cat screaming on a hot tin roof at midnight
Very good
I hope my 1200 dollars cello works out with good strings

Sound post location & the string nut being right height is where it's at 👍

Not much difference but the more expensive ones was much smoother sounding

Ugh, that buzz/sharp sound that the cheaper cellos give just annoy me. How did you even get a cello for 100 dollars to begin with

The expensive strings are better but the cello still has an awful sound.
