Before going to next storyline quest I recommend you to aquire a fishing rod at certain place and win a fishing contest. Also I advice you to open other demon doors before buying new weapons and wasting augmentations on them. Now about armor. There is only one set of armor which you absolutely have to buy, and this is Bright Plate Armor. It takes a lot of time to collect all the pieces. The last piece of this set you can buy from Arena merchant, I think.
To buy chainmail armor is not necessary, but stronger armor might help you through the game, so it's up to you to buy it or not.

There is a demon door near Heroes Guild which says something like "you path isn't lit". To open it you need to buy a lamp at the Guild, turn it on and go to the door and talk to it.

In this game you can find potions which increase health maximum and mana maximum. Also there are potions which give you free experience. The effect of these potions strongly depends on combat multiplier. I recommend use these potions later while doing arena quest. On arena you can rise multiplier up to 40 or higher.

Also you need to collect a lot of silver keys through the game, at least 25 out of 30. Some keys located in the water (you need fishing rod to catch it), some keys are buried in the ground in locations like mushroom rings and flower rings.

Player can obtain one of silver keys by shooting an arrow into hole of certain stone, I think.

About hats. Demon door at bordello contains a beautiful hat. It opens only after you having sex 10 or more times in the game ))). Other nice-looking hats you can win at fishing and chicken kicking contests. Hat from Will's User outfit you can aquire from Mr. Gout if you give him enough books. If you want a Bright Hat, you should give him good books first. If you want a Dark Hat, just give him evil books.

If you prefere melee combat, you should first learn spells like multi strike, battle charge and physical shield. Healing spell is also useful. Berserk spell also useful to some extent.
