Came to hear your solo as guitar master Tom Bukovac said your solo was his favorite. And as I listened I realized I've been here before. You are a great story teller.
Mic drop! Bar none, this has been 'my song' since my days in high school when it came out. Kinda my own personal anthem. I played in a garage band back then, two school talent shows to my credit, then off to reality...college, a real job, building a family, and playing guitar fell by the wayside. A hiatus for almost 35 years. Fast forward, and we're having a 80's reunion back in 2018. Two years prior, I'm dusting off my guitar, and reaching out to old friends I haven't in 35 years, and we assemble a band to play at the reunion. I'm rusty as can be. We all live hours and hours away from each other. Time isn't on our side, but my drive to make this happen is. RUclips helps in so many ways. That's how I came across your channel. I had no idea you were the talent behind the guitar on that song, until today. It all makes sense, though. You've been one of my favorite 'teachers' since I discovered your channel, because it's so easy to connect with both your passion and your sense of melody, and the historic songs that have been a fabric of my life for decades. My proudest moment that will live forever with me from that night playing the reunion was our cover of "Change". I can't say "thank you" enough for all you do for so many of us...but for me, this is the mountaintop, so it won't stop me from trying So, thank you, Tim!
Ignition by John Waite is one of my all time favorite albums. I had been watching your channel for months before I realized you were the guy playing those amazing leads. Fantastic album and amazing guitarist!
Ignition was the first album I ever bought, almost forty years ago...It is still after all these years one of my favorite collections of music, every song on it is great. I appreciate your playing on that album, Tim - Thank you!
Are you kidding me!!? I've been watching you a while now and this is one of my favorite solos ever! I tried learning it by ear tonight and struggled to get what i thought was a bend, but that slide part on the high strings. So i looked it up on youtube and found out you DID IT!! You are incredible
My favorite very early Tim Pierce solo is "Affair of the Heart" by Rick Springfield. The first six measures of an eight measure solo are one extremely evolving and interesting note! Genius!!
Do you know if he did Jane Wiedlin's "Rush Hour"? I heard him tell Rick he worked on all the GoGo's solo albums, and that guitar work seems exactly up his alley. So good on a pure pop song.
Amazing stuff as always, Tim. I still remember those 25 cent beer, wine and well drinks Wednesday nights at Ned's at Albuquerque in the 70s --- watching and listening to you play --- and knowing you were destined for bigger things. You always had that same big smile on your face -- just doin' what you love. Thanks for taking me back, man!
@@timpierceguitar Dude...Tim...THANK YOU! You put the music into everything. That living ,breathing soul that is alive...I can't thank you enough. And fwiw: Ive been playing 30 yrs and play professionally..but I still can't figure out How you did the solo in "Love Somebody" by R.S......That last run is Killer! Maybe do a vid on that. Thank you, forever.
Since I first heard this song at 15, I always loved the intro and the solo, even listening to it over and over just to hear all the little movements and gentle bends and beautifully choice notes and composition. It figures you did that one. Absolutely brilliant song in all ...
Probably have said this before but got to know all about you back in the early 80s when I was 12 and a huge Rick Springfield fan. Was taking guitar lessons (6th grade) so as much as I loved the tunes on Working Class Dog and Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet, I saw you playing lead on the tours. Have followed you ever since which certainly has become easier with RUclips, internet, etc. Became a John Waite fan off of the video on MTV for Change. John's next album blew up but I still have Ignition on vinyl. Amazing to now realize you played guitar on that album. I am a proud member of your master class as well. Being 50 now, I am fortunate enough to have more guitars and amps than I will ever need and have played in the same cover band for the last 20 years (but we still look good). Looking at a Kahayan on reverb to link all my stuff together. You should get the commission. Thank you for all you do. This video made my day especially during these challenging times.
Holy crap, been trying to research various bits about this song off and on for the last 3 months, you've just given me more than I could get in that whole time. Thank you!
I am constantly amazed by all of the songs that you played lead guitar on, Tim! The Babies are still one of my all time favorite bands. I feel blessed to be able to learn guitar techniques from you. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us!
I'm beginning to think Tim had a hand in like, every pop rock song of the last 40 years! Seriously he's played on everything and once he points it out you can't unhear his style of arrangement for solo's or other melodic parts. Ha ha ha. It's crazy.
GAWD. I've been watching these videos on and off for quite a while. Mr. Pierce is not only a legendary guitarist, but a cool dude willing to share his methods. Way above my pay grade but I appreciate it none the less. Thanks, Mr. Pierce!
Tim. You never cease to amaze. It's nice to see a true craftsman honing his craft and the pleasure that comes from it. Thank you for helping make the day a little bit better and brighter. Have a great week and be safe. Peace!
Several years ago the band I was in at the time opened for John Waite at a festival in Fort Lupton Colorado. Great show, really great guy as well. We talked all night after the show at a restaurant in the hotel we all stayed at. Sorry, sounds like I'm bragging. Just one of the moments from the past that stands out... Thank you sir... Love and light to all...oops, it was Fort Morgan, Colorado... 🎸🤓🎸🇺🇸☮
I've read some comments...but imo, hes a guy who's just so into good guitar, and what's great to see is a guy so involved and enjoying his life. I've much to learn from him...a lot more than guitar tricks....
I was only 13 when that song was released and here I am just shy of 40 years later and I still love that song as much as I ever did. Such a simple and perfectly melodic solo... Not all the gems from the old days stand the test of time but this one absolutely does!
I always loved this solo for so many of the reasons that Tim stated. I learned it years ago from another tutorial that had it pretty close, but it was great to get the full breakdown from the man himself. The extended versions played throughout this video are what I always hoped for. And, man, I can't imagine what it must've been like to have Tim Pierce and Neil Giraldo in the same studio... magic!
You are a very talented guitarist. I would be a happy man if I could play even 1/10th as well as you. I love your stories from the past I could listen all day. You have had quite the interesting career.
I was a junior in HS when this came out. I remember really liking this song which is odd for me at the time (was into heavier rock, soul, funk and early hip hop at the time), but this really hit a pop rock sweet spot for me. Tim you have not lost a step my friend -- you still crush that solo and all the other runs you were doing. Fantastic brother, thanks.
Tim as I started my journey with guitar almost 40 years ago there is handful of stuff I listened to that stuck with me, three of your solos left an imprint with me that when I hear them today they still make me feel they way they did 37 years ago when I heard them for the first time, Change, Runaway, and Affair of the Heart. Thanks for all the great playing over the years.
Have you ever done a video talking about all the albums/songs you’ve played on? That would be one helluva video to watch. I immediately looked up CHANGE to listen to it and it was cool to now know “hey Tim did that!!”
Your solos have always been very tasteful and balanced. Just the right mix of melody, passion and burning shred. Great tone as well. I remember when this song was a hit for John. Great singer.
This has always been one of my favorite songs, and I love the guitar playing in it :-). I didn’t know that it was produced by Neil Giraldo… another one of my favorite guitar players! Thank you Tim for making this video. It’s so cool to see you play it and hear the stories behind the making of the music.
The first thing that strikes me hearing the solo he played on the record and his playing now: somehow, Tim is an even better player now. My head exploded seeing the thumbnail. I said, "holy shit, I've been listening to Tim Pierce my whole life." Just goes to show, it doesn't matter how great you are, you are always learning.
Tim Pierce gives us an amazing musical legacy to appreciate! So many hits where the solos and tasteful guitar backgrounds made the song! Awesome guitarist!
Awestruck, Tim! I have always loved this album, song, and solo, but this particular version knocks it out of the park! I am especially thrilled to know that you did it on a B.C. Rich, whom I used to rep for in the 90s. I wish I had known that then, as all I knew about were the heavy metal players, who were definitely passe' at that time.
Thanks Tim. I've always loved that solo. And every time you post a video indicating you were the guitarist, or at least one of the guitarists, performing on the song I'm amazed. I think to myself, "that was you?!" So many great contributions and solos to the music industry! What a talented artist you are! Truly gifted and blessed. So now I'm going through all the old Rick Springfield concert videos on youtube and see you playing a white Strat and wearing a derby in almost every video. What a blast you must have had in those days. Well done! And thank you for breaking down the solo in this song. I've always wondered how you created it and made it fit so perfectly.
Tim...you are one hell of a player! And, you give hope to us "older" guys out here...not that I think a YOUNG guy like you, is OLD!! Thank you for the great videos, and playing.
Sir, that solo change a lot of our lives! And all those fiery solos you played on Rick's records? That entire Living In Oz album? I go back to your Hendrix-y chordal playing on "Me & Johnny," again and again. I really loved hearing that you used Neil's B.C. Rich to play that brilliant solo. All that early work of your's was being released during my most formative years as a player and music fan. For what it's worth, I can't get enough of you revisiting that period so, please, take us back to those sessions as much as you'd like. You're such a generous person. Thank you!
Embarrassed to say that as much as I love this song I never knew who played on it. Absolutely smashing solo. Thank you for sharing , I’ll never hear this song the same way again.
I was the one who asked you to talk about the JOHN WAITE first solo album IGNITiON. The album was excellent, all the songs are awesome and so is your guitar work and Frankie Larroccas drumming.
Tim, your exquisite playing on Change and really the whole Ignition lp changed how I approached playing altogether. I would definitely like to have you as a guitar teacher. Thank you for inspiring me, as well as millions of others! 🎸🎼🎶😎
i dont even know why youtube started recommending Tim's videos to me? i mean i wasnt watching or looking up guitar videos or anything similar on here, and so i kept ignoring the recommendations of his videos. then one day the video said something about playing on "Crowded Houses - Dont Dream Its Over" and i clicked on that because i absolutely love that beautiful song and its been on regular rotation on my mp3 player for YEARS. then like a week later it recommended a clip of Tim on "Bon Jovis - Runaway", ive never been a big Bon Jovi fan BUT i LOVED that song years before i ever even knew who Bon Jovi were when i was just first getting into music in around 11/12. then a few weeks later it recommended a clip of Tim on "The Goo Goo Dolls - Iris" which has been on my mp2 player for YEARS, now in the very early 90s, actually the very late 80s i stopped listening to new music i couldnt stand it anymore. and i absolutely hated grunge and mainstream alternative rock when it broke through in the early 90s and i completely sunk back into early 80s new wave, post punk, and goth or that is deathrock stuff. but "Iris" was one of the very very few 90s songs i had genuinely loved. NOW a few weeks later it recommends me this clip, i f**** LOVED this song back when i was like 13. i had actually bought the "Vison Quest" soundtrack just because of this song AND this song is still on my god damn mp3 player today and has been for YEARS. JESUS Tim, how many more of my absolute favorite songs through the decades have you been on!? now im watching your videos and i havent even touched my guitar in 20 years. from 15 through my entire 20s i played and i practiced every day for hours and i sucked, i mean i just legitimately did not have the gift and just never ever improved past fairly beginner level. some time in my early 30 i was just so disparaged by my own ability, and frankly i sort of felt betrayed by the guitar and my own failed teenage wet dreams of playing guitar and escaping my poor white trash neighborhood that i just stopped playing. now im 48 and can barely even do technical stuff with my hands after a lifetime of manual physical labor. but yet here i am watching your videos, and loving seeing your joy at playing and hearing your stories about playing on all these songs i have loved.
Oh my God. I have been trying to figure out this solo for ever. Thank you so much Tim. Not only did you show me how but the story and to learn it from the very person who played it. You deserve to look so happy while you're playing. I see you on Norms channel a lot and you always seem like a nice and humble man . Thanks again . I like that you're playing 9s as well . I don't feel so lite now
What’s amazing is how many of my favourite songs and artists growing up, have Tim Pierce playing with them. Crowded House Don’t Dream It’s Over, John Waite Change, Goo Goo Dolls Iris, etc….
That's a beauty of a PRS! The flame and coloring remind me of an old violin with a highly articulated tone and, yet, still mellow when needed. Oh, and Tim's playing doesn't hurt either... Great video!
Yeah you guys rocked ! Neil with Pat, blew the doors off the wagon. DYNAMIC GUITAR. I never realized how many great leads or parts you created . Bravo.
Maybe Tim has always been this Old Wise Sage....he was never young! (lol). But Seriously, I LOVE Tim Pierce..since I first him take a solo o Rick Springfieled record.
Thanks for the video! I wore the grooves out of this record in 1982 when I was 16!! One of the best albums of the 80’s - every song is great. Even better now that I know Tim Pierce played on it...and just showed me how to play it!! Thanks, Tim!
Tim I kid you not that solo changed my life as well!!!! It's got one of the best tones and it's one of the most perfectly phrased rock solos ever! I also the solo in Benitar's Presious Time. Both still stop me in my tracks to this day....it's SO AWESOME you gave some light to this solo thank you!!!
Bought the album the week it was released. Still have my original copy. From White Heat on...the charge, the kick, the surge of energy, put me on a high every time. Was so proud as a Clevelander Neil produced it. The first three songs are on current playlists of mine. First impression, reminded me of New York City.
This guy is sooooooo Awesome . tim pierce has had the life, we always wanted. He's really put the hard work into learning his art before, jumping into playing professionally.... I learn so much just listening to tim talk, & play Guitar. Tim Pierce has much to teach the world!!! WONDERFUL GUITARIST....
Yeah, I HEAR Spider in that ,as well...and If memory serves Tim may played a BC Rich Mockingbird on the solo..a guitar that Neil often used on the classic Benatar recordings. I still want a vintage Mockingbird!
Loved that one. I remember liking that back in the day, way before I had any awareness of who played it. There were a lot of solos done by the same half dozen guys back then, including Neil Giraldo and Lukather, in addition to your work, obviously.
If social media is good for anything, it's that I can find a video of the artist who wrote one of my favorite solos to one of my favorite songs describe how he did it and even give me the info on how to play it. Amazing!
one thing for me going for twice around now is the descending clusters without climbing up the vertical path, but within the treble strings, it is truly inspiring to hear them that crisp and refreshing with an impact each time an onset opens up...that kinda makes me to think as if it was somewhere in my mind as the first fragments of this artistry, the thing i was really digging up for...this time appreciated consciously.
Thanks Tim! One of my all time favorite songs and the guitar including the solo is a huge part of that. Love the way you talked through each part of this solo. Great stuff.
I want to be as happy as Tim Pierce looks when he plays guitar
If I could play like that I would be fucking stoked too!
Got it! Getting there is half the fun! Rock on everyone!!!
If I couldn't play music everyday, especially during this covid-19...I'd go full blown lock me up padded room crazy!!!
Hahahaha :D
😁🤘👍🤘
The Coolness of;
Calm, Cheery Confidence & Casually Complete Competence,
Cannot be OVERRATED 😎
Thanks Tim
Bukovac mentioned this solo in newest Beato vid, watched the original video and said oh i rememberthat one, John really belts it out, man I watched a lot of MTV back when they played music its crazy how much Tim I consumed, so glad your doing these vids to set the record stariaght.
I just looked it up from Tom's comment on Rick's interview👍
Not only mentioned it but said it was his favorite of all time! Love all those guys & tim not exactly hearing that though
Came to hear your solo as guitar master Tom Bukovac said your solo was his favorite. And as I listened I realized I've been here before. You are a great story teller.
That’s what got me here! Though I’ve been subscribed to Tim’s channel for a long time, I’ve never seen this video. Cool stuff.
You should be proud Tim. It’s an iconic solo that resonates with so many people. Thank you for sharing.
its the drums for me the song just rocks

John John Waite !! The Babys!!
Ignition by John Waite is one of my all time favorite albums. I had been watching your channel for months before I realized you were the guy playing those amazing leads. Fantastic album and amazing guitarist!
They joy on Tim's face when he's playing is priceless. I wish i enjoyed anything near as much as he enjoys playing music.

I am still amazed after listening to Tim for many years and finding out that he played another one of these classic parts. There are so many.
Tim, you are such a legendary and inspiring musician to all of us. Thank you for your work

AGREED!!!!!!! I saw Tim with RS in 1984 and got hooked right then and there!
Wow, he did that too? Damn, this dude played on almost all my favorite songs. Haha
Tim's Rick period was brilliant. Living in Oz has so much good guitar
Great solo with feedback

Geez, you are so friggin' good. Not just skill, but taste. The right note/sequence at the right time. Remarkable.
There's in the pocket rhythmically , YOU LIVE in the pocket MELODICALLY ...execution an craft needs no introduction.👍

I've waited for this tutorial for 35 years. I taught myself to play this but I only got it about half right. Now I can do it correctly. Thank you.
This solo has haunted me for years, never could get my mind around what positions this was in. So perfect!
You did that lead?? Holy Crap! That's one of my favorite solos!! Great feel and emotion! Thumbs up man! This solo stands the test of time for sure.

He is still out there playing, and still the guy you knew.

16 going on 17, but she acts like she's 21!!!😁
chills!
I thought it was the Baby's
Probably my favorite song of the 80’s And John Waite is criminally an underrated singer he’s got an absolutely phenomenal voice!!
You are a thrill.....love you smiling with joy and glee revisiting this awesome creation!!
I loved that song when it came out because of the guitars! It doesn't surprise me that you played that awesome solo back in the day. Awesome job Tim!

Tim, thanks so much for bringing immeasurable amounts of joy into our lives.

I love how you show your winding path through chord tones. I only wish I could think that fast. You’re a master.

You are The Man !
What a body of work !
Everytime you hear these on radio it must be just a natural high !
Studio Cats like you are my heroes !
I love the pause in the solo about 8 seconds in. Genius!
Best song. Best solo. So pumped to discover it was you on that classic track,Tim! Perfect mix of melodicism & intensity!

This song was all over the radio when I was a kid. Your musical DNA is ubiquitous!
Tim...you are one hell of a player! And, you give hope to us "older" guys out here...not that I think a YOUNG guy like you, is OLD!! Thank you for the great videos, and playing.
I'm a guitarist. I remember that solo. it's beautiful, it contours the song perfectly
Always fascinating hearing the stories behind these classic solos
Sir, that solo change a lot of our lives! And all those fiery solos you played on Rick's records? That entire Living In Oz album? I go back to your Hendrix-y chordal playing on "Me & Johnny," again and again. I really loved hearing that you used Neil's B.C. Rich to play that brilliant solo. All that early work of your's was being released during my most formative years as a player and music fan. For what it's worth, I can't get enough of you revisiting that period so, please, take us back to those sessions as much as you'd like. You're such a generous person. Thank you!
OMG! That solo Tim plays starting from 04:46 But in fact any note he plays in any of his videos give me energy and happiness.
Incredibly versatile and tasteful musician!
True legend you are Sir!🤩
Thank you for sharing the breakdown of this classic song/solo!🙏
Didn’t know this was Tim’s solo. Now it makes sense. Just saw John last night and he rocked this with his great band.
Embarrassed to say that as much as I love this song I never knew who played on it. Absolutely smashing solo. Thank you for sharing , I’ll never hear this song the same way again.
When I heard this song in "Vision Quest,", it blew me away, buddy. Had no idea it was you rocking on this song!
I was the one who asked you to talk about the JOHN WAITE first solo album IGNITiON. The album was excellent, all the songs are awesome and so is your guitar work and Frankie Larroccas drumming.
Wow! It's the guitar sound of my life and why? Because it was you doing it...............just loving the Masterclass too.
Your playing is so fluid and smooth, it looks so easy. I dream of achieving such an efficient and fun playing. Thank you for your videos
Oh my God. I have been trying to figure out this solo for ever. Thank you so much Tim. Not only did you show me how
but the story and to learn it from the very person who played it. You deserve to look so happy while you're playing.
I see you on Norms channel a lot and you always seem like a nice and humble man . Thanks again . I like that you're playing 9s
as well .
Bravo.
Tim when you’re showing us pictures of guitars used in old songs, you need to show us photos of you from the same era!
Maybe Tim has always been this Old Wise Sage....he was never young! (lol). But Seriously, I LOVE Tim Pierce..since I first him take a solo o Rick Springfieled record.
I loved his white Strat during the Rick Springfield tour..
@@Scottocaster6668 Yes, I remember that well. Damn, what a sound in Tim's hands. I knew right then and there..I wanted to try to be that good.
@@georgebarry3153 - This is how I remember Tim in the 80's: ruclips.net/video/vSduTkklPvM/видео.html :-))
Thanks for another great video Tim, your touch on the guitar is of the finest quality, I've yet to see anyone better. Stay safe ya all.
Thanks for the video! I wore the grooves out of this record in 1982 when I was 16!! One of the best albums of the 80’s - every song is great. Even better now that I know Tim Pierce played on it...and just showed me how to play it!! Thanks, Tim!
I played this 15 times in my car today. What a guitar gem from the Master🙏🏼
❤❤❤ YOUR WORK WITH JOHN WAITE AND PATTY SMYTH ARE CLOSE TO MY HEART. I LISTEN TO THEM BOTH DAILY AND I HAVE 1000s OF CDS
Love that solo… and most solos from Tim actually. A monster is an understatement. ❤
5:27-5:33 great line! Love your story telling Tim
Bought the album the week it was released. Still have my original copy. From White Heat on...the charge, the kick, the surge of energy, put me on a high every time. Was so proud as a Clevelander Neil produced it. The first three songs are on current playlists of mine. First impression, reminded me of New York City.
I always loved this solo Tim! I knew you played on the track but did not know it was your solo. Thanks for sharing!
The joy on your face Tim is AMAZING!!!
Mike, Thanks....be well :)
You should be proud of it Tim. It's a fantastic solo. Perfect for the song
Interesting you talked about what Neil taught you, I can hear him in that solo. What a great teacher to learn from
Yeah, I HEAR Spider in that ,as well...and If memory serves Tim may played a BC Rich Mockingbird on the solo..a guitar that Neil often used on the classic Benatar recordings.
Amazing!
one thing for me going for twice around now is the descending clusters without climbing up the vertical path, but within the treble strings, it is truly inspiring to hear them that crisp and refreshing with an impact each time an onset opens up...that kinda makes me to think as if it was somewhere in my mind as the first fragments of this artistry, the thing i was really digging up for...this time appreciated consciously.
man, I love that song and the guitar solo is such a strong identifying piece to the puzzle.
Thanks Tim! One of my all time favorite songs and the guitar including the solo is a huge part of that. Love the way you talked through each part of this solo. Great stuff.
One of my favorite riffs of all time, sir. Great, to know who you are! Thanks
