Hello from Germany🤜🤛. Cool🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍. Ps. Do you also cook in Dutch Oven? I have a lot of Dutch Oven🥘🔥👍 recipes and more will be shown. Recipes - from regions of Germany, Russia and Asia. Greetings Waldi🤝🍻👍👍👍👍👍
*I do have a what to do question here.* So, Too Late, I did just that. I unplugged my 850 and just as you said, I soon saw billowing smoke in the pellet bin / hopper. Luckily it wasn't on fire and just smoldered out however a few days later (today on Easter just before everyone is on their way over of course) I turned on the BBQ and it started up but only burned for about 10 minutes then shut down all on it's own. No error code on the screen, just shuts down like someone unplugging the unit. The computer screen goes black without going into cooloff mode, but the blue LEDs from the wifi are there so I know it still is plugged in fine. If I wait a minute and turn the screen back on, it will start up again only to shut down in about 1-2 minutes of burn time again with no error message on the screen, it just goes black. In short, is there a thermal sensor or something that could be triggering this to happen. I already know a lot of unhappy guests will soon be commenting. Thanks
So here is just a guess at what is going on. If you saw smoke from the pellet pit for sure you had a fire trying to work its way backward. Thankfully there was not enough airflow oxygen and it died when it got to your hopper. Only issue is now you have a empty auger so when you turn it on, naturally you would have pellets dumping into the burn pot waiting to get ignited, but there are no pellets dumping in (yet) and the ignitor will time out. If I were you. I would dump the burn pot or vac it out. Dump a small handful of pellets into the burn pot and turn it on. That should get a fire going and then fresh pellets should be hitting the burn pot by the time that happens. Hope this helps. Happy Easter!
@@GrillSergeant Thanks brother, I actually did end up working on it for hours trying to figure it out and did something very similar that worked. At first, I vacuumed everything out making sure nothing was clogging the blower, made sure the auger was pushing pellets through, etc but it just kept shutting down where the board would go black as if it was shorting out and the BBQ is only a couple months old and didn't seem like there were computer issues so I started from the beginning and after numerous failed attempts, what worked was going back to the startup in the settings panel to prime it up properly and in short, we finally got it running good and everyone got their smoked ham and chicken for the day (not enough time for the brisket but hey, we did what we could do). Thanks for answering, you were pretty much right on the money with what the issue was. Thank you
I just got my pit boss as an early Christmas gift in the beginning of dec. and your Tip videos have been super helpful since I had no idea what I was doing. Thanks!!!
I've been doing this shutdown procedure since I first started using pellet smokers, except for setting it to 200°. I will start doing this, thanks for the tip.
When I shut mine off, I did not let it cool down. I did have the grate open and the lid shut, but when I went outside about 20 minutes later I could smell it smoldering. I will check the Firebox again and the pellet box. That is my worst fear is the pellet box Catching Fire fear having the pellet box catch on fire.
Hey man I read if you lose power while using your smoker, when power comes back the unit will think it’s empty and run the auger continuously and overfill the firebox. Do you know anything about that and how to remedy that if it does happen?
That won't happen. Once power comes back on you will have to turn on your smoker again, at least that's what will happen if you have a Pit Boss. You can test out what happens to your smoker by unpluging it and plugging it back in.
I just bought mine used it once and of course i didnt do my homework. Unplugged. Now when i turn on i have auger error code. Vacuumed out. Still have same code
Good video. I intend to get a pit boss this week. Quick question for you though, what if there is a power failure during a cook? Is there a way to prevent a fire other than a pellet dump?
Love your channel. Just got my PB Brunswick Vertical smoker. I love how sturdy it is. When checking it for airflow. There didn’t seem to be much, fan was turning though. After burn off, I did what you said and set it to 200 for 20 minutes. When I shut it off the fan ran for about 40 minutes before shutting down. After there was ash in cook chamber especially at bottom. I’m a die hard stick burner and this is my first pellet cooker. Is this normal? TIA
I don't like the way the new PID pit boss smokers take so long to go through shut down. The old ones would only run a set amount of time. I never had the old ones have the fire burn into the auger after shut down, but on my KC combo I constantly get smoke coming out of the hopper after shut down because the fan just keeps going for 30+ minutes and ends up causing the pellets in the auger to ignite. I usually unplug it after 5 minutes. That's enough time for the pellets in the pot to burn out. After that the fan might kick up something that will start a new fire and just keeps feeding it with the fan.
Hey Grill Sergeant! Great channel! I’m a pretty frequent smoker. I have an offset, Kamado, and a gravity fed. I’ve always steered away from pellet smokers because I’ve heard that they don’t deliver much smoke flavor. I heard great things about the Pro Series 4/5 and started shopping around. That’s when I stumbled across your videos and now I’m looking at the Brunswick. As someone who’s cooked on both as well as other types of smokers, can you compare the smoke flavor between the Brunswick and Pro Series as well as other style smokers you’ve used? Thanks!
Thanks for Stopping by Reggie. My next video will cover a lot of the questions you ask and I’m going to compare vertical pellet smokers to the barrel style pellet smokers and go over the pros and cons. What kind off offset do you have?
@@GrillSergeant Thanks for the quick response! I have an Oklahoma Joe’s Bandera. It’s a “vertical offset” ( are we seeing a pattern here?). As you know, those Brunswicks are hard to come by, and I’ve found one in stock… can you give me a quick pull the trigger or hold fire?
@@reggieb.763 The only other option I would look at is the Pro Series 4 V2...they also updated their controller so you have 10 degree increments from 150-420 just like the Brunswick.
@@GrillSergeant Thanks. I’ve watched it and looks and sounds like it’s really just a preference thing. I’ve found them both now for virtually the same price ($2 difference). I like the look of the Brunswick better, but the shipping damage issue may be pushing me towards the Pro Series 4 V2. Slightly more cooking space and 25lb more hopper capacity on the Brunswick is hard to pass up though… time for a coin flip! LOL! Thanks again.
Grill Sargent, I've fallen behind on your videos. I know you've had the horizontal grill style smoker awhile now. What is your recommendation if someone could only buy one smoker? Horizontal or vertical?
I'm about to get the 850 or 1150 pro series. Any thoughts? Does the 1150 use way more pellets than the 850 would? I seen the 1150 has the easy ash removal 850 does not. I will be mostly cooking for 2 to 4 people
I'm sure the 850 would be fine for 2-4 people but personally I would go with the 1150 as I don't think the pellet burn rate would be that much different and with the added space you can fit more food / waterpans...ect.
Brand new to pellet grill/smoker. I understand about turning down to 200 after high temp cooking but should the grill door be open or closed while the temp drops?
You can open the lid to let some heat out but you mainly want to keep the lid closed when turning off. Helps restrict airflow to help the fire in the burn pot die out
So I been watching your videos for a while and I been wonder where you in the service or are you posing as a service man? And did you know there is a company that sells bbq supplies call Grill Sergeant... you might want to check your branding
Thanks for watching my videos. I never served but have the upmost respect for those that have / do. It was either Grill Sergeant or Grill Cosby so I’m glad I went with the first one. 😂 I did see that there is a grill called the grill sergeant and even a Fortnite video game character called Grill Sergeant so I guess it’s a well sought out name 😂 What smoker(s) do you use? 🍻
@@GrillSergeant I have several smokers . I have 2 oklahoma joes stick burners and a Ryder dlx too . My Ryder had an auto shut down on it and it doesn't power off till the fire out. Running a pellet grill is easy . If you can't understand how to read an owners manual then you should own a pellet grill. And FYI the best way to shut down a pellet grill is to empty the pellet hopper completely as it shut down so you don't get any burn back . And to run the auger completely empty too which takes like 5mins on high not Then hit the shut down button and let the pit do it's thing while leaving the lit open so the fire burns out quickly. If you leave your grill on low for 20mins all you are doing is wasting pellets and filling the fire box with pellets where of you have it on high with the auger and hopper empty the fan will pump more oxygen into the fire pot causing the pellets to burn up properly. Of you ever owned a pellet stove you would understand how a pellet grill works.
@@GrillSergeant they make a good product. They a great bang for your buck . They are built to last and if you take care of it you should get several years out of it.

Thank you kindly. Keep going as well! 🍻
I'm kinda surprised this isn't more commonly known. Reading instruction Manuals needs to be great again lol.
Ha! People would be shocked to find how much information is in those manuals!
Exactly, it's usually stated in the shutdown section.
all this info is in the owner's manual please read it people lol
I’d be out of a job 😂
Thanks sarge. Accidentally unplugged mine mid smoke, was able to get the still smoldering pellets out of my auger before a disaster occurred.
Great tips and info! -S
