Playdead's INSIDE: Shockwave Level (Sound Re-Design)

  • After lots of work, my (partial) re-design for the shockwave level of Playdead's Inside is finally done!
As I have said before, this is one of my favorite games ever, so it was challenging to try and follow up Martin Stig Andersen's incredible sound design work. However, I'm pretty satisfied with the end result!
I tried to approach this re-design in a way that would convey not just a dark, threatening atmosphere, but also the sheer power and mystery of the shockwave itself. For the latter, I primarily used the tried-and-true formula of the metal slinky (which has to be one of sound design's greatest discoveries); I wanted to make something hard-hitting, but not overwhelming to the point of player fatigue. As for the atmosphere, I tried to add a menacing group of sounds for whenever the player is in danger of being taken out by the blast (one needs to hide behind something in order to be shielded from it). Everything else was pretty much a mixture of library recordings and my own material.
I hope you enjoy it! Be on the lookout for more re-designs in the near future!

1:18 sells it. would add some buzzing for the flood lights that snaps in and out when the wave takes them out

This one sounds more scary, when you're without protection of the shockwave and how a beat starts playing indicating that youre in danger its horrific and anxious. Good work

The orginal sounded like a powerful shot being fired. This one sounds like large machinery colliding.

Holy cow dude this sounds just as good, it fits so much better, and sounds more like a mining machine than a weapon like the original sound design.

Oh my god, thanks! Spent a good couple of days trying to get the blast sound right (I think I used my own metal spring sound pretty heavily in there).

Did you guys find the original sound design unfitting? I think it was the most important factor in convey the metaphorical meaning of the scene. (But yeah this is seriously impressive for such a hidden away video!)

I'll never stop wondering what the origin of this shockwave is. Wish it was explained.

Fr man. It is my favourite part of the game also because of it's mystery, I wanted an explanation as well

likely mining charges. it's a tunnel-shaped cave, so it's likely a relatively small explosion but all the pressure from the explosion is sent down the tube. the area just before the shockwave is called the mines, so it's likely a larger part of the mines. here's an example of a shockwave like that happening irl: ruclips.net/video/oqSJhrRY-Pc/видео.html

Honestly the shockwave never being explained makes it 10x better.

@@ariabritton9669There was also distant flashing and constant electrical humming, if you will.

Sounds like a reactor or something, I saw an image of it functioning in the background...its like a piston that smashes into the ground

this is more realistic how a shockwave would sound like...but gameplay wise nothing beats the original

It's good work, but I honestly prefer the original and think that this version takes away the mystery of what the original sound created.
