- Building with bamboo is a little different than building with conventional lumber.
In this video, I go over the process of making a modified fishmouth joint, an even stronger joint than the traditional fishmouth joint.

Aussie tape measures have metric down one side and ft and inches down the other.

I grew up with bamboo, have always had a big love for hamboo architecture/building..... I live at 6500' in the mountains above Lake Tahoe, I grow bamboo for added beauty on the Āina, but have been creating with cedar, willow and aspen for decades. Your fish joint & extra support is beautiful, thank you for taking the time. Inspired as im building a trellass of sorts and you sparked memories of my father, his craftmanship and love of bamboo too......

It is hard work. I’ve found a better method with hole saws and jigsaws

Greetings from Ecuador! I'm making some bamboo trellises at the moment, and just starting to learn about how to join the bamboo. I just made one part by similar to the fish mouth but straight instead of curved like this |_| on the top part of the post, and then shaving the beam a bit on the sides to fit into the groove. Ended up quite nice. I really enjoy your videos so far!

Hong Kong still puts up Bamboo scaffold 50 stories tall with no joint cutting. The Bamboo is just lashed together.

I will be combining two different mediums in building my home, the main body of the house will be built using aircrete and I will be incorporating bamboo as decorative, and structural components. I really want to use the bamboo for the most part in the roof, if you have any quick tips for doing this, It would be great if you could touch on this subject in future videos. If you use a Hole saw there will be no carving necessary and you can match the size of the bamboo to the size hole perfectly. Thanks for the video! :)
That’s what I use. Plus a dremel to shave it down a bit after using a hole saw. I should make a 21st century version of this video

Your “fishmouth” joint, in the pipefitter world we call that a saddle joint. And you're going to put a lot of effort into carving out that joint. Now in your video you demonstrated your use of forstner bits… Okay so I'm going to take you to the next step. A large forstner bit or better yet a cheap hole saw the same diameter as your bamboo. Just take a length of bamboo and use your hole saw to drill a hole all the way through it. And since the bit is the same diameter as your bamboo pole, it'll effectively cut the bamboo in half and create the saddle for your joint at the same time.

Thats a very complicated way to cut a fishmouth joint mate, to 45 degree cuts, then scallop out the surface to flat is the easiest way by far and much much stronger. the way you show it you have such a small bearing surface....

Please do not use a circular saw on rounded objects . I am a professionel woodworker and most powertool accidents happen with circular saws. Not wearing shoes is another mistake.. for bamboo cutting i always use a japanese pull saw. just as quick and a lot saver. Keep up the good work
I need to get me a japanese hand saw. Not only is the circular saw unsafe but it cuts rough too. Itʻs what I have for now I guess. Mahalo for the warning.
the handsaw also has the advantge of not using electricity. So its a win win.
