Haydn is the father of the symphony. His music is amazing in harmony, grace and elegance. Viva Haydn a true genius of music that gives us unforgettable moments of pleasure and haunting music. Bravissimo.
@@patrickwells4014 The symphonies are consistently at an outstanding level; the piano sonatas are not - many of the early ones were turned out simply as exercises for students. That said, providing you pick and choose, the better ones such as the ones in A flat Hob. XVI:46 (1768), or c minor Hob. XVI:20 (1771) are on a level (arguably greater even) with Mozart’s best ones.
I've listened to Haydn for many decades now, but I still take great pleasure in filling gaps in my knowledge such as this delicious symphony of the early 1760s, with its typically Haydnesque fusion of early classical elegance reinforced by late baroque contrapuntal tang that raises this music above less talented contemporaries.
LDC
