Xbox 360 Custom Mod - Game console restoration

- In this episode, I'm going to fix, restore and customize a Xbox 360. I found a listing on Facebook marketplace, somebody offering two xbox'es 360. One with serious overheating problems and another with cd/dvd hardware problem. Maybe I can make one fully working from two defectives, just using the working parts, I thought. Well, this was a fun modification, took me like 3 weeks to complete the job. Like every new project, I learned a lot with this one. Used in this restoration/fix/customization/modification two colors, pearl white and rose gold. Gold led light to pop up the internal and cut a custom window on the side. The colors are gorgeous under the light. Beating the infamous Red Ring of Death

I don't know why But I'm finding it more pleasing to see others taking older systems even broken ones and bringing them back to life and giving them new meaning. Plus the awesome paint job helps a lot. Thank you for sharing this with us.

If you are mechanically inclined you can do this its very common for car mechanics to do it

Dope video. If you weren't doing the glass cut out I would say to go with the penny trick plus fresh paste. I did that and my 360 has been going for an additional decade now thankfully

DVD drive problems and bolt mods are my favorite 360 problems to find. Usually, in my experience, with the DVD drive, it's either a drive belt replace, a cleaning, pot adjustment, or replacement (all very easy). Then, with bolt mod consoles, I find that 90 percent of the time, just taking the bolts off, replacing the heat sink and x clamps, and reflowing will fix it. Nice video!

I tried to change a CD drive and I realize that I can't because the DVD key that is paired with the motherboard... so hummm what the hell did you just swap these drive and just start successfully a game ????????

Xbox 360 uses SATA II would not make a difference since the bus speed is a limitation on the xbox 360 motherboard design itself.

Xbox 360 was locked with some HDD firmwares. It is impossible to put in an SSD. I had to flash a new firmware in a 250GB Western Digital HDD to emulate a Hitachi.
@@badger1331 The Xbox One still uses SATA II, as well.
It's actually faster to buy a USB 3.0 SSD and connect that to an Xbox One, than to run games from the internal hard drive.
I'm so glad the next consoles are launching with internal SSDs. Console players aren't going to know what to do with all their spare time when they load up their favorite games and the loading times are less than half of what they were.

What is the penny trick
@@antoniolemus1117 you stack bunch of pennies on the gpu so when you close the xbox the case pushes the gpu down and makes better contact. Pretty temporary fix.

My first games console was a Super Nintendo and from time to time I like to go retro and revisit the good old days of cartridge gaming.
My next console was a PlayStation and I've stayed with Sony PlayStation ever since. My nephew on the other hand prefers Xbox, he would give up his Apprenticeship in Motor Mechanics to own an Xbox like that!
I will of course advise him against such a fool hardy move and share this video with him in the hope that the skills involved will transfer both ways.

This brings back so many memories of my 360 which I had to fix a bunch of times! Now its a memory piece on my room but man did I play the s#it out of my Xbox.

Wow dude nice job I recently got my old Xbox 360 elite out of the closet it worked when I put it in there but having open tray issues and tray opening issue ordering parts for it...it's nice to bring an old friend back to life.

Thermal paste wasn't the issue. The cause of the red ring of death was the solder that connected the GPU to the main board. Microscopic cracks developed over time eventually leading to bad contacts and ultimately failure.
Cooling was quite poor for the cpu and gpu, fans were weak and the heatsinks weren't that great either. The slim model has combined cpu and gpu with much bigger copper/ aluminium heatsink and a big ass fan compared to the "Original" 360's.

I never done an aperture mod to improve the ventilation for xbox 360 case mods that was pretty neat to include. What size bolts and nuts did you use to hold them together? Lexan polycarbonate seem to be a lot more durable versus plexiglass which is easier to break.
Never! Not once did i treat my Consoles like that! This is just a Shame how People treat them.

Count yourself lucky.Alot of us went through multiple consoles because MS rushed the console and it always suffered from thermal degradation.
@@SPEEDFREAK6988 yeah i had that happen to me, I bought the day 1 360. it lasted until last year, i bought another one and it broke within a month. thankfully the one i have now has lasted great

Very nice job as usual but I think it would look better with green LEDs so it matches the power button and the Xbox logo as well but still awesome. Great idea of removing a piece of metal and adding that glass (or acrillic) with some space for better air flow.

Fantastic job by the way, considering that console was on its way to landfill aye, I am surprised the disc drive worked when you swapped them over because you usually they are serial coded to the board (which is why we would of needed to swap drive main boards around, however this may of only been applicable to ps3). FYI if you come across xbox 360 drive that does not eject, 99% of the time, there is a small motor with a rubber band, if you remove the band and wash it with soapy water, then dry it, clean around the pulleys, then fit the rubber band back, it should fix that problem. Great job, I love it.

I think there will be dust on optical lens inside drive after this mod. It's showily but not practical.
