LA NASCITA DEL SACRO ROMANO IMPERO GERMANICO

La formazione di una nuova e grande entità statale, dopo la fine dell’Impero Carolingio fondato da Carlo Magno, possiede delle caratteristiche storiche, culturali e geografiche del tutto uniche e diverse dall’Impero dei Franchi. Impero germanico, legato alla personalità di Ottone I di Sassonia, è un dominio laico per formazione, ma allo stesso tempo religioso per la continua intromissione del potere imperiale negli affari della Chiesa. Una scelta che segnala il tentativo di rendere il ruolo del Papa subordinato a quello dell’Imperatore romano, come del resto avviene in Oriente e a Costantinopoli, in cui il Patriarca è soggetto da sempre ai voleri del Basileus. Forse il dato di fatto più interessante di questa vicenda storica è legato alla interazione profonda e protratta tra la Germania e la Penisola Italiana, che inaugura una vicenda di rapporti inestricabili, a volte cordiali, spesso conflittuali, destinati a durare per secoli.

The formation of a new and great state entity after the end of the Carolingian Empire founded by Charlemagne, had historical, cultural and geographical characteristics that were completely unique and different from the Empire of the Franks. Germanic Empire, linked to the personality of Otto I of Saxony, it is a secular dominion by formation, but at the same time religious due to the continuous meddling of imperial power in the affairs of the Church.
A choice that signals an attempt to make the role of the Pope subordinate to that of the Roman Emperor, as was the case in the East and in Constantinople, where the Patriarch has always been subject to the wishes of the Basileus. Perhaps the most interesting fact of this historical event is related to the deep and protracted interaction between Germany and the Italy, which inaugurated a history of inextricable relations, sometimes cordial, often conflictual, destined to last for centuries.
