Hey John, noticed the black ipod you pulled out happened to have a black dot on the screen. Pretty sure the internal battery is swelling, might wanna get that replaced before it breaks the screen! There's also a bunch of cool mods to go from the hard drive to flash storage! they're definitely fun little devices to play with

I still have 2 of the Droid 2 sliders, only mine are the r2d2 editions with matching docks. They went on sale when new because people didn't want a star wars phone. They make the most horrendous R2D2 noises when booting and you can't bypass it. Several meetings interrupted by that thing.

That Nexus 5X brought so many memories back. Got one for free from a family friend in 2018 when my galaxy s6 died and used it for about a year. That fingerprint scanner was the best one i've ever seen on a phone and it was so clean and worked awesome. Sadly it died due to water damage later, i wish i had it again.

If we were playing cell phone bingo, I think I would have a real shot at winning… I had so many of those phones. Those old school Windows phones bring back memories. I used to flash all the custom ROMs. When I was poor, I bought a Palm Pre and hacked it to work on Cricket because I couldn’t afford t o pay someone to flash it.
If I remember correctly, the Palm Pre and the newer Windows phones are all but useless now since they’ve shut down most of the servers that basically everything ran on, or the apps are too outdated.
It’s fun to look back and see all the crazy ideas that companies green lit back then. I kind of miss that… Everything now is so similar. Thanks for bringing out the inner geek in me!

The Palm Pre was one phone I loved until if messed up on me, one night it was on the charger and lcd cracked making it hard to use. Then a paid to get it replaced, then after they took my money a month later the issue became a none defect that they would replace under warranty. The next one had software issues, then the 3rd one randomly deleted contacts and apps and they phone out it’s a problem with that one too. That how I ended up with sprint first Samsung galaxy, they let me choose a new Comparable phone from stock because they had to replace it so many time in like 6 month time frame.

  • @matthewdropco
    @matthewdropco 2 года назад

I had/have that 4900 Sanyo. I even had the desktop dock that had the usb port out the side. They quit selling the charging/usb cable at the sprint store when Sprint launched their 3G service. The dock was supposed to be used for people to use the phone as a modem, but like dial-up modem, and use your minutes. However, the 3G service was an always-on thing and although it was a seperate flat rate charge, it was unlimited. (Shortly after I had gotten the phone, Sprint called me and asked me if I wanted to Beta test that service and they would give me a special price that would not change once it went nationwide. I said yes.) The reason they took the charging dock out of the store and that cable is that when they launced the 3G service it wasn't long before people realized they could use their phone's 3G service for, what at the time, was a pretty fast speed. Especially if you were using a Tangerine iBook laptop. It wasnt' as bogged down with bloatware, like PC's were, and at that time, websites were still pretty flat. the iBook from 1999 I got used, the phone was from 2002. It was a good combo for a while. I liked the idea that I was using the phone & the g3 service in a way they hadn't intended the customers to do, but they couldn't stop me. Tethering, before wireless hotspots. lol (btw, I had the Motorola, time port, and when that was stolen, the Q. I hated moving from a physical keyboard, so I went with the Samsung Epic, then eventually iPhone 5, 6, 8, now 12pro)

So here's the real question: do any of those feature phones use 4g? Or are they all basically museum pieces now that they're shutting down 3g? At least with the smart phones they have some utility even without phone service especially on WiFi. (I know most of these are just "classic" nostalgia pieces, not intended to be useful anymore, and I do get that. Just the "ready to go" had me wondering)

The bigger batteries out of the Treo 650 or 700 should work in the 680 or similar that use the slimmer battery. Pinout is identical and back in the day some company even made special back covers that allowed to use the larger batteries for more runtime.
Also check out Dmitry Grinbergs Palmpowerups software.
Palm OS was the best ever.
like 90% of the Palm Pre have a defunct touchscreen today. there is some delamination going on.

Wasn't there a recall on the 7? I can't rememeber if it was for battery or what. Either way, if it was that, it might be eligible for a new battery, which would be cool and the phone would last a while. The thing that sucks is that there's an OS cutoff, due to hardware included in later models that the older ones don't support in the current OS.

  • @PeterBellefleur

The slider Motorola was known as the Droid. That was the first one. It was a huge hit because it finally was something to compete with the iPhone on Verizon, the iPhone being an AT&T exclusive at the time. Android was also exclusive to T-Mobile originally, and went nowhere. Verizon's prior big iphone competition was the Blackberry Storm, which was a collosal piece of garbage, and pretty much killed RIM.
The Droid's success pretty much forced Apple to come to the table with Verizon and work out a deal because even apple die-hards were not willing to leave Verizon's vastly better network (at the time) for the iPhone.
The 2nd one you had was called the Droid MAXX and was 4g and a few years later.
Verizon actually had to pay Lucasfilm a license fee to use the Droid name. After they threaten a lawsuit. But they made up and there was even a Star Wars themed version of the Droid, painted to look like R2D2 with special sounds.

Just came across your channel and immediate subscribe but this video in particular was quite a blast from the past.
The Moto Q you had was my first 'smart' phone and I loved it. I had the Sprint Q9c version. But having the PocketPC style Windows Mobile instead of the touch version was nice and preferred at the time for me. WinMo was a lot more open to tweaking/hacking/etc than Android and iOS are now.
The Motorola candy bar phone you had towards the end was another fun surprise to see. That is one of the last holdouts of the old Nextel/iDEN network before it finally got shut down. Wonderfully slow 14.4k data speeds but being based on Motorola's tried and true two way radio systems, that network was reliable as hell.
And of course can't forget the OG Droid. My first Android device. Long in the tooth now and even back then it had its growing pains (the lack of decent internal storage, relying on SD cards for most of your apps being one of the main points IMHO) but it was still a solid phone. The slider keyboard needs no introduction. The bedside alarm dock that you could get for it that automatically put it into a desk clock mode was a nice touch. Just drop it in.
Lastly, the old school 'double click' camera shutter buttons. I MISS THESE. I wish manufacturers would bring that back.

Think I still have a couple of the first flip and slider phones I finally got. I just originally wanted a decent feature phone with a camera and didn't want to pay extra for a data enabled plan. Eventually it got cheap enough they were offering free Android phones for upgrading. I ended up with a Samsung galaxy S3 and it was pretty good at the time and I used it quite a while till it was finally stolen when someone drove away with my work van while I was on a ladder working. Upgraded to a Moto G5plus and still using it. They want serious money now to upgrade to a really nice phone or pay to lease it instead of giving you a decent older phone like they used to. You can outright buy decent unlocked refurbished and new phones now anyway so why play their games.
