    The idea of your companion gaining the supernatural properties of what it eats just made the Ranger an 11 in my book.

    I had the hardest time trying to figure out what exactly a Ranger was when I first started playing, but things eventually clicked into place for me when I made the connection that one could say a Ranger is to a Druid what a Paladin is to a Cleric. They’re the middle ground between a Warrior and a Nature Based Spell Caster, like how a Paladin is the middle ground between Warriors and Holy Based Casters.

    My last ranger in a group I played stayed out of town when the party went into civilization unless absolutely needed.Arranging rendezvous days and points with the party every few days while they were in the city. While the rest of the party went about the normal carousing ect, my gm ran a mini campaign for my ranger to solo

    I think it's very telling of how much help the ranger needs that you can make a better Aragorn with a rogue or fighter with the outlander background.
    Fortunately, as a visitor from the future of 2020, they seem to have settled on a fix via a UA called Class Feature Variants and they look to be making them official in the upcoming book Tasha's Cauldron of Everything!

    As far as Ranger having Nature Proficiencies; I would flip the script in a Custom Sub-Class where part of the Campaign's Theme is having Roaming NPCs that are away from their Normal Habitat that the Ranger would have Advantage against.

    My play style of my ranger is a mixture of Jon snow(single sword wielding and fights mostly with longsword and has animal companion) and Robin Hood (use archery for difficult shots and trick shots) not your typical ranger but still fun for me.

    Great show. In the Realms, Rangers have spells from a Divine Source, (Wisdom casters) Gwaeron Windstrom, the master ranger, and Mielikki the forest goddess. The Ranger represents Gwaeron, and the animal companion Mielikki (re: Drizz't books). D&D took where Tolkien left off, and added the spell stuff. Another inspiration for Rangers is Beastmaster.

    I'm late in this and great podcast but if you want a survival campaign then check out the Dark Sun Campaign Setting. It might give you great ideas that you can pull from.

    I'm currently working on a ranger for my book that I'm writing that I am also creating in a group who is a beast master and is a twin of a Lycanthrope. Currently I am working to prove to my gaming community that ranger isn't a useless class like that claim it to be

    Cool episode, you have a good chemestry and good flow with eachother. Here's some stuff you could work on: Maybe work on the lighting a bit so it doesn't seem so dark in the room. Also I'd love to see a series of unearthed arcana stuff :)

    So I recently heard Jeremy Crawford say in a sage advice column that though they will release the revised ranger it won't invalidate the phb ranger. Not sure how that will work, but he was saying rust there are many who currently play rangers and are happy with them so they don't want to tell them the class you've been playing all this time is now invalid. But he didn't say how it'll all work out, so who knows.

    Isn't the 4e feature you described basically Hunter's Mark? You pick a Target and as long as you concentrate on it, you get extra damage on every hit. And you can change that Target if you kill them to continue doing extra damage without needing to recast the spell

    Speaking of liscensing issues they need to make a dnd online for people to play without having to sit down at a table together it would allow people to find games when they dont have many friends into dnd and friends to connect once a week or a month or what ever anywhere even if they cant come to the table together

  • @Blaze-ku6gf

    Before I got really into D&D and eventually knew what every class was about, I was hoping the Ranger would be naturally good with traps and alchemy and all manner of survivalist thing. Instead they turned out to be a half-caster, which was just strange to me. Totally okay to like that or even prefer that, but a magic-less hunter/trapper mountain man Ranger is more to my liking.

  • @ericpeterson8732
    @ericpeterson8732 5 лет назад

    8:39 If only that was true. Like the other class who was designed poorly, the sorcerer, they don't want to invalidate their PHB so they refuse to fix the problem. The 5e Ranger has the weakest of all 1st level abilities. They nerfed favorite enemies to reduce damage and basically copied mid- level rogue abilities (evasion, etc) to give to rangers at high levels. The hunter subclass makes it playable, but the beastmaster ranger sucks due to action economy.

    2nd edition ranger had no spell casting. And there is such a thing as an urban ranger.

  • @johnathoncrines3198
    @johnathoncrines3198 6 лет назад +2

    Unfortunately, you cannot have a horse as your animal companion. A black bear is medium, but the horse is large, ditto with the elk, or like a ridable boar.

    • @johnathoncrines3198
      @johnathoncrines3198 6 лет назад +2

      And that sucks.

    • @Thedungeoncast
      @Thedungeoncast  6 лет назад +4

      Oh man, you are correct. You used to be able to have a horse as your beast companion in previous editions. I would personally simply allow it. The Beast master Ranger is fairly under powered as is, and the "rule of cool" is my philosophy of choice.

    Can I have a mammoth as my animal companion? It would be super cool and could serve as a mount for the whole party.

    • @Thedungeoncast
      @Thedungeoncast  6 лет назад

      Unfortunately RAW says no. The Challenge rating for a mammoth is too high and would be overpowered compared to other companion animals.

    • @InquisitorThomas

      However you can get an Elephant as a mount in the PHB

    I’m about to start a campaign, and I am going Ranger because it is my favorite as well. I’m more of a role player than a “roll” player, but would you suggest the UA Ranger in place of the PHB? I haven’t ran a full campaign with the UA, I don’t care about not being combat effective but if there are other Rangers that do run it will there be a noticeable difference between us?

    • @Thedungeoncast
      @Thedungeoncast  6 лет назад +1

      There are some differences between the two that make the UA an, overall more competent class, but outside of the Beastmaster rework it won't be too overtly noticeable. That being said, if you are running a Beastmaster Ranger you should definitely go with the UA. Not only is it more capable in combat then the PHB version, but the way the beast companion operates is a bit more realistic to how it would IRL.
