"If I knew anything about love, I would be *making it* instead of sitting here talking to you guys" He's very honest with his listeners, I respect that.
It was sort of in that weird in between time period. The end of the 80s - the beginning of the 90s. The year or so that didn’t know what it wanted to be, the 80s has wound down, but the 90s had not yet sprung.
It's Generation X immortalized in film. It wasn't ahead of it's time, it had it's finger on the pulse. Singles, Reality Bites, SFW, etc all tried and failed to be what this movie was and would eventually become..
One of the Best movies growing up and was introduced by by a Great friend of mine who died recently and was watching it recently in HONOR OF HIS MEMORY!
Thank you for this movie! I watched in 1994, on cable tv, when I was 22. I loved it because I'm shy and I've never been popular. I fell in love with Mark and I like the way Christian Slater looked in the 90's. Greetings from Chile!
He was so right at the end, the 80's were so cheerful and great. The early 90's were ok, but feeding off the vibe of the 80's... that's why we got the teen angst of the 90's, and grunge, and Linkin Park Hybrid Theory (that album and this movie is what got me through it)
Boxers Austin I saw this at a yard sale but had no idea of what it was so I didn’t get it but then I watched it one day for no reason I don’t know why I wrote thos
Stargirly 12 everyone says it’s at their Walmart or target, not at mine tho. It was so important to me as a teen, but I’d probably not watch it very often now. It is a good one! Did u like it?
"They say this is where the reception is the coolest." Long live WHFS 99.1 Alternative Rock Station in DC in the 1990s! They played this sound bite all the time.
By far one of my favorite movies centering on pirate radio. I have ran my own underground FM nearly 30 years and worked in the business commercially as well as a technical engineer. The whole plot of Mark being a pirate when actually what he was doing wasn't pirate radio. His home was by the school and that was where his signal was listenable the best. Part 15 operations limit unlicensed signals to around 300 feet although can vary significantly. The only time an antenna was shown was on the jeep and that was an old style cell phone antenna that wouldn't work for VHF. If he, theoretically was breaking the law, it would had been hard to prove especially during this period in time. Not exactly sure how other stations were receiving his very LPFM signal to re broadcast across state lines, but hey,--the magic of TV Hollywood can make anything possible even the possibility of Mark being capable of converting a AM shortwave radio transceiver into a LPFM transmitter. Working on actual broadcast exciters and transmitters, as an Engineer I yet to figure a way around that one.
My gf and I have a theory. Mark got out, and his family had to change their names and jobs. Mark became JD, and his dad went into construction. After moving around so many times, his mother killed herself. Feeling pissed that she did what he was too "cowardly" to do, he began to slip into madness. Didn't help that no one seemed to have gotten his message. Mr. I'm Serious's suicide gave him the inspiration for the murders. He did NOT kill himself. Instead, he knew he and his dad had to leave before he was arrested again for "manslaughter" then murder. So they then continued to move. Eventually, he became a writer, figuring it was finally the best way to get his message out. And then he chose the wrong interviewee.
It is both shameful, but somehow appropriate, that this movie above all others is most easily accessed by being pirated in bits and pieces on RUclips rather than being available on a Megacorp's streaming service.
Nirvana actually quoted a scene from this movie on "Territorial Pissings", in this movie and on that song they both sang a sarcastic rendition of "Get Together" by the Youngbloods as a testament to the generation gap and the difference in culture from the 60s to the 90s. The 90s turn the 60s upside down... literally 👻
Simply put...it is about radio piracy by a minor speaking the truths that syndicated stations wouldn't dare. It's a cult classic and definitely worth at least one viewing. Afterwards you'll probably be quoting Happy Harry Hard-on one liners daily. It is one of those films that sticks with you even through and over long periods of time. Give it your full attention and respect for being ahead of it's time, and possibly even glimpses of the future. I hope this helps you to explore this underrated film.
Principal Mrs. Birdwell in 2000 at Paradise Valley High School in Phoenix Arizona expelled students starting day 1 and kept their names on the roster. A retirement check disappeared under her watch. The drama department and all its funds(second only to the yearbook club) disappeared. Justice? None. Made an administrator of the School Board. Rot in Hell, you destroyed kids lives. This movie is amazing
Hilarious, the only place to watch this movie is for free on youtube not amazon, google movies, netflix lol, NICE Job @habibi ... top 10 movies of all time. Completely underrated.
REMAKE TIME!!!!! Arturo is doing a podcast and his pronouns are Princess and Ze and to shock everyone.......he is gonna eat McDonald's on the air----instead of organic Chipotle. And they'll be Hiphop beat - - that same one of the last 30 years in the background. Nobody will be offended. It'll be a hit!
This movie could have been so much more iconic if it had included more popular songs of the time, or at least, better songs. Although I'm sure there are some people who liked the songs. But I don't think it had much mainstream appeal. I was just watching this movie again with my sister and my son the other day, and we were all commenting about how it was a cool movie but the music kinda sucked.
all I wanted was an FM transmitter. Make no bones about it.. I am a conservative in economics, national defense, and upholding/defending our Constitution. I'm also a 70s kid who grew up with Jimmy Carter as my President. The man, bless his heart, wanted to micro-manage everything and it was too much but he taught me to love and accept all. That includes every word ever created for every race, culture, religion, and adult sexual consensual preference. I am a modern Republican and in step with Republicans who wanted to free slaves 170 years ago. In step with Republicans under Reconstruction. In step with EVERY Republican vote against Jim Crow laws on the federal level successful but not on state level in the South. The democratic party controlled the South, created the KKK, and passed every Jim Crow law possible. What it took was a Yankee dem. to gain office.. be President to change things... a leader to enforce our Constitution and Civil rights. His brains were blown out in Dallas, Texas. LBJ signed the Civil Rights law with every Southern Democrat in opposition. All Facts. Martin Luther King Jr. was a registered Republican all his life... FACT and think about it. I have no prejudice against any no matter race, gender, or any who disagree/agree/oppose my sexuality... sit on my lap to agree or disagree. I promise it's only between us and no government involved. signed, Frank Gordon Stoeffler A Republican who supports Trump
5 Civil Rghts laws passed 1860s,1870s,1950s,1960s. All were passed by a supermajority of Republicans (the Dixiecrats voted no) They were signed by 2 GOP presidents, 1 democrat, and VETOED by a democrat (Johnson) Civil Right bills only passed because Republicans pushed them thru
MLK Jr was affiliated with neither party, fact. Democrats did not start the KKK, case in point- which party now flies the confederate flag? Plus southern democrats went republican after the Civil Rights passed in the 1960’s. Pleas stop with your feels and disinformation, it’s tiresome and weak.

This film has such an original plot and what a killer soundtrack. The 90s were a better time.
It was sort of in that weird in between time period. The end of the 80s - the beginning of the 90s. The year or so that didn’t know what it wanted to be, the 80s has wound down, but the 90s had not yet sprung.
90s predict future do whe what this ? not sure
@richlisola1 Exactly this. Not exactly 80's but not yet 90's. Kind of ironic considered we, as Gen X, were also considered voids lol
I think this movie was way ahead of its time tbh.
Is ahead of it's time.
It's Generation X immortalized in film. It wasn't ahead of it's time, it had it's finger on the pulse. Singles, Reality Bites, SFW, etc all tried and failed to be what this movie was and would eventually become..

Pretty sure the HFStival was the last festival i ever went to. 98 or 99 i think.
This movie is what every teen needs.
Agreed
Best 80s movie. Poignant and still relevant, especially in the internet age.
90s
Either way 80s 90s still stands up and got the message spot on
It was filmed in 1989-90, released in 1990. So it’s kinda both 80s and 90s. A bridge
@@slowedndreverb The generation that grew up in that era, relate to films like "Heathers" as an 80s film & "Pump Up the Volume" as 90s....

The focus of HHH was that he was playing music that was counter-culture to the suburban pop of the 80's, before grunge and alternative rose.
Hard Harry was a reprobate and his taste in music should reflect as such.
