The most amazing thing about Tara's character is that it actually makes you see the futility of the dream of marrying someone for their wealth/status, while also showing you why a woman might have that dream in the first place.

I loved the episode where the mehendiwali(Pooja) agrees to take the money and keep quiet about her sexual assault, Karan lashes out on her but Tara supports her without judgement... This shows Tara is understandable from where the young girl comes from and at times financial stability can count more than justice

When I first saw 'Andaaz Apna Apna', I really felt odd seeing everyone laugh and relate to the male characters when they were literally gold digging. Yes, the girls do end up falling for their partners... but still if they were women, they would be scripted as side persons- not someone the lead would end up with.

It's sad really how men marry demanding dowry and are considered totally normal but a woman wishing to marry rich to have a financially stable future is seen as a villian, especially in a society where she is told from childhood that her only role is to get a good marriage.

I just love this series so much!!
Especially Tara as a protagonist who is flawed, struggling, manipulative at times, yet morally held down is so refreshing. Lust for money is always symbolised as a negative sign, but still is everybody's guilty pleasure.
My favourite part is when Tara has her moral breakdown, and is walking on the streets of her older neighbourhood, symbolising the lost simplicity and confidence of being good at heart.

I am not sure if protagonist is the right word for Tara's character. It is a leading character and that's all. Protagonist, typically, champions some cause, has a moral arc and evolves. Tara's character is human but not of a hero

Gold diggers (or people who make friends with rich people in hopes of getting some of that richness) do exist, whether male or female. You can't deny it. But judging that someone is a gold digger without properly knowing him/her is definitely wrong and should be discouraged.

Tara is someone I honestly like. Her decision making skill are really good. And like you said there is "falling in love" in the end. The reason I respect her is her lack of judgement. Whether it's who Karan is or the mehendi girl incident. What I loved about the series is the growth of each characters. Tara, Karan, Jazz...the way their characters develop is fantastic.

I love Tara, but she is definitely not innocent. She trapped Adil into marriage, she got a lot from him, and it seemed like she was getting herself into a good place with all that. But her development in season 2 just god rid of all that. 4 years of marriage and she wants half his father's company or the house where he grew up. She did get a lot out of him, but her lust for money and status will get her down. And she even said that she cheated on him too. She doesn't even love him, but keeps playing games because she is so in love with what he symbolizes.
When you said "And perhaps for the first time a gold digger becomes a fully developed protagonist" it gave me goosebumps and also the hope that Indian cinema will come up with such new concepts!

Actually never even realised that men with those traits are portrayed in media because they are not shown in a very negative light like the female ones. In the movie Andaz Apna Apna as well the two male leads are also technically gold diggers but are shown in the light of protagonists and their manipulative traits are shown with a comic tone.

I loved tara as a character. (Spoiler alert🚨) She was caring, giving towards her family but also strong and clever when it comes to her business. She never felt selfish or materialistic even though she married with a motive of getting a rich husband.
The best thing about her was that she acknowledged that her marriage was unfulfilling and that is why they both(she and her husband) "cheated".
Her character touched upon this bigger issue in society where women are forced to be the gold diggers.

I studied in a famous kind of college and most people passing out from there will really have good chance of being pretty monetarily strong in their lives. But one day in our first year, a male professor who was also a student there and is pretty successful in his career was kinda chatting with students and there he told to the boys, "oh you will lead a life even better than mine, you will get a academic or industrial job, get married to a rich girl, command a lot of money and your life is set" and they were very casual about it. This is reality, many parents "invest" in their sons to get him well-established also and also to command huge amounts of dowry and an highly educated woman whose career they will ruin then.
A woman is a mother too and she never wants to raise her kid in poverty , lack of nourishment,lack of sanitation ,education and health! And she herself don't deserve this

Wow now this is a new and such a fresh take on perspective of personality of tara - "the gold digger" i mean within so many layers that her character portrays this gets so wrapped and yet so clear in times but this was so well put!
As someone who experienced this during college life, it's extremely disturbing and depressing to forget & come out of it.
But hey everyone is entitled to make their own choices.
the entire concept of a gold-diggers came because women didn't earn themselves, your entire lifestyle, financial security and everything else depended on how much money your husband earned if you married for love to a poor man then your screwed. you become poor. Love fades away after sometime and then your just poor.
Well it does look like gold digging and social climbing though but yes in the end I understood where she came from.. I don't want to be this woman but I do understand this woman.

Honestly I admire gold diggers a little bit (both men and women). These people are smart enough to be able to enjoy money by fooling others. Yes it's not moral. Nor is it right or just. But since when did we all become that? Every single one of us are tainted or corrupted in one way or will be soon enough, even without the gold diggers. No one deserves it, I agree.
