I find it interesting that most of the processes involved in the production of the pen could be automated, but the company chooses to make them by hand. I'm guessing purely as a marketing strategy.

Agreed. Anything that is labelled 'handmade' automatically holds a far higher value than that which is not.

Those nibs are Platinum's and they don't market them as "hand made". Only higher end urushi and maki-e pens by Platinum are claimed to be hand made.
