No one "hones" their craft in their 20's or even their early 30's. During that period you learn the basics of your business, learn to deal with the world, look for mentors, books etc, make your mistakes, especially people mistakes. And now, if you're bright enough you've got the raw material. It's at the point where you're comfortable doing what you're doing that you can start the honing process and not until that point. This is the point where innovation should comes in. You try things that have never been tried before in your industry. You eliminate what doesn't work and keep what does. That is the honing process.
