- HAPPENING NOW: Late last week, the PG&E-maintained Butte Canal breached into Butte Creek resulting in over three days of extreme sedimentation and turbidity. Unfortunately, Butte Creek was currently occupied with holding Spring Run Chinook salmon at the time. The impacts will most likely result in high to complete mortality for salmon and other native fish.
This comes at a precarious time for Spring Run Chinook Salmon in California. Butte Creek is the last remaining stronghold for Spring Run Chinook salmon, but has experienced three years of poor return due to various factors. This sedimentation event may lead to the collapse of the Butte Creek run and moves Spring Run Chinook salmon to the brink of extinction in California.
Thank you for bringing awareness to Butte Creek. We live in the canyon and witnessed this disaster firsthand. PG&E are evil. First the Camp Fire went thru here and just as it begins to recover…this. Butte Creek is a magical place and deserves protection for its salmon habitat. Best wishes for fishes. 🇺🇸💕🇺🇸
What a sad situation !
PG&E please Restore what you have just Destroyed.
Soooo did the temps rise? We’re there chemicals in the canal? Why is it devastating for this years run?
Thank you, gentlemen for covering this situation. It is devastating, but more people need to know. SR has been on the brink for so long and to have it look like this is the last...it is beyond words.
Just awful, furious with PG&E
What did PG&E do?
Wow I am beyond saddened and imagine all the salamanders.
