Rush hour is the most fun time to ride, though I ride with an air horn and a death wish.

Motorcycle safety training says it's dangerous to trust eye contact too much. Someone can be looking right at you and not see you if their focus is behind or in front of you. Eye contact with a gesture as you have here can usually be trusted. Also look at the front wheel of the car to see if it is rotating or steering, that will give a split second quicker indication of motion or the direction of a turn. Of course if someone is NOT looking at you, they probably don't see you!!!

Man I wish my city had half the bike infrastructure of Lisbon. I ride to work mostly on the side walks and a little on the streets because the drivers are absolutely crazy

You can't win because most of those bike lanes, sorry, most bike lanes everywhere, are badly executed. The only thing that works is physical separation (high curbs, fence posts, etc.). If cars or pedestrians can easily cross into your path, they will.

You have so many bike lane in lisbon ! In france we have 2 or 3 bikes lane on all the country i think 🤣
What are you talking about? When I was in Paris in 2013 there were bike lanes everywhere.
One time, near the Gare du Nord, I was waiting for the green light to cross the street and another pedestrian pulled me back because I was standing in the bike lane and there was a group of "furious" cyclists approaching rapidly. :D
That's odd. I was in Paris back in 2008 and rode one of those free city-bikes in some of the most traffic heavy areas and, since we were in the bike lanes we were fine, despite all the traffic. It was great because we had very little to spend and instead of using the metro to move around, we got to save money while sightseeing :)

palmieres, that was exactly the idea I got from Paris: there were so many cyclists riding around everywhere because the infrastructure was so good. : )

I wish we had more bike lanes in Calgary, Canada. We have lots downtown but getting from the outer edge of the city to downtown is not the safest. There are roads that are just plain scary and unsafe to use and many bike paths have been planned for a long time but have not been developed yet. People have a fuss over any sort of bike development and thus it is delayed. Do you have any tips for a person who is just starting their bike commuting journey? I have recently subscribed and it was your videos that actually gave me the motivation to try biking as commuting rather than just for leisure.
Canada..uau, what a country! I'm glad you are going to cycle again. Be super aware of your surroundings, sounds, people, don't get yourself super confortable, keep a safe distance from the sidewalk and car parked doors and make the necessary signs with your arms. The rest you will figure it out. Don't forget about the traffic rules. Good luck Stackz :D

About the bike lane at 3'52'', the stretch at the other side of Av. Roma is the stupidest I've seen in Lisbon so far. There is still a sidewalk for people, but at the entrance for the train station, only the bike lane exists, cutting the pavement. I think it is ridiculous that a person has to stop to see if there is a ciclist coming to continue his/her track. It's another reason, at least in that street, for me to walk on the bike lane, as I already don't like the portuguese pavement.
The stretch that you took is not so interesting for the pedestrian, although I suppose that near the hotel there is much confusion in the sidewalk because of cars/bus or probably - another problem of Portugal - holes in the sidewalk. I don't agree that bike lanes are constructed to steal space for people to walk. I do however that ciclists be able to ride on the streets, and actually the ideal would be to remove the parking slots in some places...it would make a whole difference. It is already like this in german cities. Don't tell me that they had their cities devastated and were reconstructed...the place where I did my Erasmus didn't have any parking slot on streets like Av. Berna, and streets where the bus goes by, like in Belém, which I think everyone agrees that is a confusion everyday.

I can ride through my own city in 1 minute doing full speed ahead (Aalesund, Norway) Here there are no bikelanes, so it`s easier to get around since nobody is expecting bicycles. Cars (& the people inside them) are very careful towards pedestrians and always stop for people crossing. The best way to get around in this city at least is use full blast and be out of the way as asap as possible.

Well don`t come here. We are one of the worst cities for bikes since there is a total lack of bicycle lanes. I may live in the most beautiful city in Norway but it is not a good bicycle city. Trondheim, Stavanger or Oslo is probably better. Cheers and keep up the fun videos :)

Nice bike lanes. In Iaşi, Romania, all the bike lanes are something drawn on the sidewalk.

Why are there so many of these black cars with green roofs to see in your videos?
That's the compulsory color scheme for taxis in Portugal. There's an ugly beige tone which is also used. And in the Madeira archipelago, they are a bright yellow. :)
In Germany all Taxis are in that Beige tone.
