      Keep it positive and actually celebrate when your dog makes a mistake because it offers you an opportunity to train your dog. The more your dog makes mistakes the more you train and the the better the dog gets.

      It's not a world recognised approach because of what is taught to trainers, they're taught the to follow the four quadrants of dog training, this is the problem basically but there's more to it, traditional methods and protocols are shared from trainer to trainer and these days RUclips videos show them how things can be done, but it's all based on the same principals. I started out helping horses & moved over to dogs around 25 years ago, I didn't take a single course back then, I was naturally talented at reading a dog, I understand facial expressions, body language, different vocalisations, tail movement and environmental context. This helps me to learn about a particular dogs needs & the things he doesn't like too. I worked out for myself how to find what a particular dog loved to do & would encourage it so the dog feels fulfilled. I'm a bit daft, I'm always happy and calm, dogs copy me & become happy and calm too, That's when we can start to play our interactive games, that's when the learning begins. When a dog does what I want, I praise at varying levels, when a dog doesn't do what I want (yet they know), then I take appropriate action, that might be me becoming a physical barrier, I might say 'no', I may place them on a leash to help guide them or just simply end the game and do something different for now. I think that building on trust and relationship is very important, it's my first step toward helping any dog to learn what's wanted from them, yet this step is ignored by most trainers, it confuses me why, because it makes life so much easier when a dog actually wants to work with you. I think Saro dog training & probably only a handful of trainers in the world train this way, so unfortunately it's difficult to spread the word which is a shame because it works so well. This year alone I have helped more than sixty dogs that where about to be put to sleep due to aggression issues, all had worked with other trainers, behaviourists & vets over quite long periods. What they all missed though was relationship, trust, fulfillment of needs & fun. All of those dogs are no longer 'aggressive dogs'. simply because their needs are now met in full. No punshment, no treats. Maybe a bit of flooding to help resolve reactivity.

I've trained dogs and you would fins issues, bad behaviors and so on, but with foundations comes clarity so you can do what he show us in pretty much any situation. But, if you haven't trained them you can't expect to snap them out of a trigger and use obedience as "punishment." And this is why more than 90% of owners fail and have just terrible dogs, because of 0 training or proper training. Is like if you send someone to defend from someone that would attack them but you haven't teach them how to.

    This is not at all correct.. think of it, best way to see how to train a dog is to see how mother dogs train their puppies. it's not all lovey, lovey sometimes the mama dog bites and barks harshly
    human beings cant know how to train more than the mama dog
    when my puppy was small it had a habit of growling every time i gave her a bone.. was so severe that at one point she even bit me just for stroking her while she was eating
    i tried this 'calm, non harsh methods in such videos for months.. nothing worked.. " eventually i had had enough, i once took a towel wrapped it around her eyes, she couldn't see me, took the bone from her forcefully and then took her out for a few minutes away from the bone.. closed the door behind her.. she wimped and wimped after about 10 minutes. Then i allowed her back in and gave her the bone
    the growling never happened again - like kids sometimes positive reinforcement will not work

    • @SaroDogTraining

      Great question. You don't just punish the dog for that reason. This solution in this case would be either confined the dog or do not let it get into the garden first of all. Prevention is the key here. Second, make sure that your dog knows the correction process before you use this method. Third, try providing other forms of stimulation so the dog is not focused on the garden.

      @@SaroDogTraining First, You’re making assumptions about my experience because you don’t have a valid response. Second, there is a difference between and excuse and a reason. Do you know what that is? A genuine attempt to resolve the issue. Which, either way, is irrelevant to my comment. I made an objective statement. You’re pushing this positive only stuff and because of it dogs will die. And people, too. When an owner tries the be positive only with certain dogs, and it doesn’t work, what are they going to do? Send them to the pound and they’ll more than likely be killed. Which is far more inhumane than a little buzz when they do something wrong. The tools make them think twice about acts that could be catastrophic. You positive only people demonize e collars and prongs when those tools save dogs and peoples lives. These aren’t your babies. They aren’t helpless little children. They’re animals. And some breeds are more than capable of killing people.
      If your positive only stuff worked so well, why are there so many dogs in shelters? Why are so many dogs attacking and killing people? You can’t blame everything on abusive owners. I have two 130 pound male Rotties. And they’re not my first. Balanced training, E collars, prong collars and the like have saved their lives at points. Every day I see dogs without prongs or e collars get out of control when another dog walks by. My dogs don’t do that. I don’t appreciate people making other people feel like they’re bad owners for using these tools.

    • @SaroDogTraining

      That in my opinion is human error and that is the punishment that the human gets. When a dog is in a state of the mind that can destroy the sofa, it means that the dog is being very clear about it's mental and emotional state of the mind. Your dog may have been telling you about how it felt for months or years but you have not listened to it so your dog is being super clear and is showing or communicating it to you physically so you can see it. So, now, you need to ask yourself. What can I do to help my dog? What is causing my dog to have such a negative emotional and mental feelings and how can I help it? It is not a time to punish a dog who is being so clear to communicate to you.

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  Год назад +1

      Here are a few tips to help address this behavior: Teach the "Leave It" Command: Start by teaching your dog the "Leave It" command. This command teaches them to let go of or ignore objects on command.
      Divert Their Attention: Instead of approaching your dog with the cloth directly, try redirecting their focus onto a different object or activity. For example, use a toy or a treat-dispensing puzzle toy to engage their attention. As they become engrossed in the new object or activity, slowly approach them with the cloth, rewarding them with praise and a treat for staying calm.
      Positive Reinforcement: Use positive reinforcement techniques to reward your dog for appropriate behavior. Whenever they remain calm and do not bite at the cloth, offer praise, or playtime to reinforce the desired behavior. Consistency is key, so be patient and reward your dog consistently for their good behavior.

    I know a guy who had a little dog and every time it barked and growled loudly at new people he would either smack it (not break its jaw or crack its ribs) but hard eneough to hurt definatly not make it bleed or anything deplorable because then aside from him being a POS the dog would be afraid of him. Or he would more commonly grab its body and face so it couldnt bark and hold it down on its side until it stopped growling. The dog is the chillest small dog ive ever met. It could partially be that it matured but dogs are relativly smart animals and will lern from punishment. I think its dumb to say dogs dont learn from punishment because there intelligent animals capable of doing so and they all have different personalities. Maybe you think that because your dog has the type of personality that makes punishment less effective or your punishment didnt hurt eneough to bother the dog and it just thought you were playing.

      Punishment is something that humans do to get results right away. It is something that humans have figured out to use but dogs and animals do not relate to that mindset. They see it as getting physical. Dogs respond to physical activity differently than humans. Dogs have teeth and they can use them to defend themselves. Once they do that, humans feel pain get more aggressive and use more physical punishment. This cycle continues until someone gives up. The better idea would have been not to start it all. If you feel that dogs are intelligent, then why do we have to rely on physical punishment in the first place?

    I agree that hitting your dog or yelling at your dog is not the way to go by punishing them but I don't agree with playing with them every time they're bad because what that teaches them eventually is all they have to do is act up and you'll drop everything you're doing and spend time with them, dogs like to be commanded, so I don't agree with this..
    I have two dogs and the way I discipline them when they act up is I separate them and I chain them up separately on their leash in two separate rooms and I give them timeouts... At first it was pointless but after a week or two weeks doing it they know by the tone of my voice that they're about to get put in time out...
    Now this may not work for every dog but I feel like it's something to try😊

      Firstly, you are not playing only with them when using this system. You are retraining them and teaching them that if you misbehave, I am committed to address it. That is what responsible and committed dog owners do. Invest in teaching, training and addressing their dog's wanted or unwanted behaviours.
      Secondly, the reason, you are using this system is to emphasis on training and make your dog better so you don't need to correct them in the long term. Once they learn the correction cues plus you invest in providing your dog's daily needs, dogs won't make anymore mistakes. I hardly correct my dogs now because they don't do mistakes.
      And finally, chaining and punishing a dog by isolating it, is has a very psychological negative effects on dogs which in long term can cause other unwanted behaviours to develop.
      There is a reason why I suggest this system because I have done my research and have studied dog and human psychology for over 20 years. Solutions like yours are very outdated and not scientifically proven, unfortunately.

    I'm not sure if this would actually work for a puppy who pees in the house who already knows the schedule we go out to pee for. My 4 month old puppy would get excited if i ask him to sit and stay because he thinks there's a treat coming. And correct me if I'm wrong, I don't really want to give my dog the impression that he's about to get a treat after he just peed inside.

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  Месяц назад +1

      The idea here is that if you have an energetic, rebellious, large Pitbull dog, you need to be more preventative and not allow a strong breed of dog to get to that level that you don't have control over. Most dog owners wait to deal with dog-related issues when the situation is out of control and is too late. Then they start looking for quick solutions to fix a problem that they have created and blame it on the dog's size or energy. In any case, I suggest you go back to the basics if you need help and start pretending that your big dog is an 8-month-old puppy and start building the basics. As mentioned in the video, this is ideal for dogs who have some basic training and are familiar with the basic obedience commands. Don't feel bad going back to basics. It is not a matter of pride. It is a matter of making the wrongs right as no one will know this other than you.

      It appears that you haven't established clear word associations with specific actions for your dog. With the right approach and a clear understanding of dog behavior, your dog can respond better to commands. By taking precise and consistent steps in training, you'll avoid common mistakes and achieve desired results. While dogs and humans are distinct, they share emotional commonalities, and it's essential to recognize that dogs have been selectively bred by humans for human companionship and cooperation.

    I used to be really calm and took the time to see things from my dog's perspective. But lately, I'm so stressed and I got a new puppy last august. He is sweet, crazy, and also has awful behavior. He pulls trash out all the time. As soon as the trashcan starts to fill up, he tips it over and pulls every single piece of trash out and strings it across the house, including his old poop. (He also is just absolutely not picking up potty training, no matter how patient I am. I've tried Kennel training, Treat training, potty pads, letting him out on a frequent schedule.. it just will not click for him). He also has successfully managed to remove the couch covers, pull out every one of the cushions and had the entire living room covered in cotton and foam. Sometimes I just lose it and start screaming at him. I feel so bad after I calm down and take a step back. I just wish I could see things through his eyes. And when I say he is sweet, he really is. He loves giving kisses, playing, and will even fight to crawl under the blanket with you when you're going to bed. My other dog is the complete opposite and I've never had to deal with this before. My other dog is 3 yrs old, is so calm and angelic even. He always lets me know when he needs to go potty, follows his commands, never tears anything up, waits for your permission to eat, etc. I don't know what to do, I still love him at the end of the day, I just don't know how to get him to understand.

      Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience. It's not uncommon for dogs to exhibit certain behaviors when their routines are disrupted or when they experience a change in their environment, such as being left with someone else for a period of time.
      It's important to remember that dogs live in the present moment and may not fully understand the concept of time or the reasons behind our absences. Their reactions can be influenced by a range of factors, including their attachment to their owners, their individual personalities, and their overall comfort levels in different situations.
      To help your dog adjust and minimize any negative reactions, it's essential to gradually introduce them to new experiences, such as being left with someone else, and provide them with plenty of positive reinforcement and reassurance. This can be done through gradual separations, leaving them with familiar and comforting items, and maintaining a consistent routine.
      Additionally, when you return from your travels, it's important to provide your dog with extra love, attention, and reassurance to reinforce the bond between you. Engaging in activities that your dog enjoys, such as playtime or walks, can help rebuild trust and create positive associations.

    My 14month old border will run away when I try to put leash in her. She is afraid to go out on sidewalk to park. Fine at park but walking around neighbourhood her tail is always tucked in. And once off leash does not come! Its very trying

      You need to work on building the foundation and that only happens by starting or improving the basic obedience commands at home so it can bring his confidence level up. Once you get 100% results, than you need to practice them at back yard, front yard and such before getting to the dog park. I will explain a bit more in my upcoming video.

    i don’t understand, what was the punishment? all i saw was sit, stay, and then walking again. but my dog doesn’t know commands

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  6 месяцев назад +5

      As mentioned in the beginning of the video, your dog needs to know the basic commands of sit, stay and come. The punishment is that you use the info that your dog knows and reiterate it to make them to become better and learn that if they make a mistake, they need to rework the lessons.

    I really don’t get this approach with no negative feedback, how is the dog to know especially when it’s intentionally disobey. I hate all these videos that say make sure your dog knows the commands already. They do.!! and that dog’s tail is obviously wagging the entire time so it’s enjoying the training that it would seem it would be positive reinforcement. I think there’s some details missing here. Further, I can’t stand, watching another video about training out barking by rewarding non-barking. If that was the case, I’d be constantly feeding my dog treats for non-barking as most of the time they don’t bark.

    Thanks for sharing. My husband wants me to hit my dog with newspaper if she does something wrong. I don't want to do that. That will just make her worse. I don't agree with it. She barks constantly and chews the couch and pillows when she hears people outside and sometimes she bites me. She goes to the window and starts going crazy. Yesterday she was so good. We played for awhile throughout the day and after she just laid down and slept. She is 7 years old.

    I would say basically you're putting the dog on the leash and putting them to work doing basic commands and getting them to pay attention to you and respect you and respect your commands in a working format. It's kind of like what trainers would do with their Arabian horses if they do it if they train the horses correctly. They're very sensitive and intelligent so getting angry and hitting them is not the way to go about it. So I think there is a similar parallel between the Arabian horse and the Beagle.

    I will admit I use to pop my puppy it started only when he would bite my face I only did it a couple of times and he learned it was a no no but idk why I guess I assumed it worked good with that so I tried it with biting in general and it does not work if anything it causes them to do it more because they’re being rough and so are you but this actually works for him it’s cute him like sighing because he knows I’m punishing him with tricks

    • @SaroDogTraining

      That has not been a major issue to make a video about it but in anyways, try providing some rules and boundaries for your dog so it learns to follow your cues and commands when needed.

      Based on the clues that you have offered, the reason your dog bites and you can't put the lead on your dog is because you are not providing enough or ideal amount of exercise and mental stimulation. Watch this video to learn more. ruclips.net/video/7PLTj5zNSVw/видео.html
