Novara are mostly younger people. I don't blame them for being browbeaten by the initial ferocity of the 'antisemitism' smear campaign. We're socialists, we are supposed to be dialectical. Learning and developing one's thought from experiences is supposed to be core to us. Vindictiveness over stuff like this, whilst understandable from those who were wronged, is a liberal tendency we're better off without. Hopefully this experience will prepare us all better for the future.

Mixed feelings about this. On the one hand I think more is needed. Personal apologies from Ash to Jackie, or from Rivkah to Chris Williamson, or from Michael Walker to the makers of The Big Lie. Enormous hurt has been caused. Calling someone an antisemite in the UK is - essentially - calling them a Nazi. These were terrible, and terribly wrong, accusations.
They were also naive. You don't need to know much about the Palestine solidarity movement to know that anyone who supports that cause WILL get called an antisemite. Always and without exception. And that's not new (see for example Norman Finkelstein's 2005 book, "Beyond Chutzpah", which showed how this was working 20 years ago). But of course not everyone has that knowledge, and Ash seems to be suggesting that - through inexperience - she gave it more credence than she should have. She has learned.
But I totally agree with Jackie that UNLESS this is confronted, it will just carry on getting used to bring down the left. And - difficult though it may be, especially for those so dreadfully wronged - we need some way of linking arms to move forward. So this is a positive move, and I think Jackie is generous here.
Unfortunately though, the left is still getting its responses wrong, allowed itself to be used to police how Israel, antisemitism and allied issues can be spoken about. Novara were hopeless re. The Big Lie at Glastonbury. Michael Rosen and JVL have attacked David Miller. See also the lack of support for Dianne Abbott. We need, as Benn said, to 'toughen up' and give no quarter to the combined forces of the Israel lobby and the political centre whose campaign is shameful , is in bad faith and 100% dishonest. They will always seek to open up cracks in our ranks. We shouldn't let them.

Good to see Ash have the humility to acknowledge she got it wrong. There was no sign of any such humility from Rivkah though who was breezily expounding as if she had been fully aware all the way along, when in fact they, and Michael were very much complicit in the witch hunt. Not quite so sure about Aaron as I occasionally heard a more nuanced response from him. There was a particularly naive conversation between Ash and Owen Jones some time back when it was clear that neither had at that time understood the difference between antisemitism and weaponised accusations of ‘antisemitism’. Yes it’s a step in the right direction from Ash and demonstrates the strength and decency of Jackie’s character, but I’d like to see Rivkah and Michael in particular take a hard look at themselves, their egos and their analysis of what went on in Labour from Blair’s time till the present day.

For me there are just too many 'blind spots' to Novara's work. The ongoing privatisation of the NHS (rarely called out when the evidence has been overwhelming for the past decade and only now mentioning it), early reporting on Assange when he was being attacked by Sweden/the US to attempt deportation lacked any suspicion to the underlying context to his assault allegations, the constant and bizarre white washing of the British mainstream media journalism as being 'lazy' and 'needing to do better' rather than analysing the underlying forces/context that drive them as systematic and purposeful in their 'reporting'; and as for foreign policy issues...shocking lack of questioning around NATO expansionism, questioning the US agenda in Ukraine and pretty much most issues about Western imperialism. Including Ukraine. They rely on Western supporting sources (including, bizarrely the same mainstream media they decry as being lazy!) And it goes on. How can a socialist/left wing so-called independent online journalistic channel like Novara have so many 'blind spots' on such fundamental issues? I feal 'blind spots', like their 'lazy' analysis of the media, risks deeper of analysis the channel obviously needs.

I used to follow Novara Media for their political analysis but eventually reached the conclusion that they were cowardly and too concerned about saying the right thing - depending on how the wind was blowing at any time. They are trying to monetise their channel and seem too afraid to risk their ''reputation/living'' by actually having convictions ahead of the herd and instead come in only when the time is right to reiterate what is already being said by others. I am not disabled but have written to them on numerous occasions about their complete lack of coverage about disability rights here in the UK, they never cover it, go anywhere near it. That is just another example of their cowardice and lack of conviction. Too busy trying to create the next generation, legitimate and ''alternative'' news channel to risk sticking their necks out. Apologies if that sounds harsh but we've got a war on the homeless, the disabled, out of work people, the low-paid, asylum seekers, unions, LGBT and Trans, environmental issues, our basic human rights as well as countless other things going on in this country and Novara Media are not the ones to push back against it, they're just trying to make a nice living from talking about the bits that make them look clever and ''concerned''.

They'll probably do something similar again if they get ganged up on by the big boys. The purge of the left by the Starmerites is actually continuing to reduce party membership (25,000 lost members in 2022). The people who gave up their membership were not unreconstructed Blairites disappointed by the lack of enough right wing policies but members of the left. These are the people who knock on doors canvassing and work to keep the party organisation afloat at local levels. Starmer is pleased with the money he has had from right-wing rich people. Let's see how effective those donors are at knocking on doors. Starmer is killing off his chances of an absolute majority. His present policies will lead to a commitment by those on the left not to Labour candidates but strictly to tactical voting to get rid of the Tories.

But then again I think it illustrates that any up and coming independent media channel will need to withstand repeated tests of character when experiencing various maelstroms of false outrage, where extremely strong pressures mount to denounce individuals or groups that are being smeared or mischaracterised. Novara failed badly on many occasions as they are independently funded they can always stand their ground if they choose to. I've cancelled my contributions to them twice over their lifetime - both times over the weaponisation of anti-semitism and how they refused to take a moral stand. Don't expect too much better from them in the future. They will continue to falter. But at least on this they have apparently admitted they were wrong.

Nobody of good faith wanted to be associated with and accused of anti-semitism , Now thankfully Asa Winstanley has published a responsible, properly researched and well-substantiated account of the whole issue: ie we now have some reputable journalism. There was absolutely zero good journalism about the issue at the time, and it's necessary to reflect that Winstanley still found he was unable to publish in this country. I feel -and felt at the time for JW and each of the wrongly accused. Al Jazeera in 'The Lobby' released footage which showed the protagonists of the anti-semitism smear to be blatantly dishonest. We didn't have those proofs and can we imagine for a moment how it would have sounded had we rubbished as liars the people who brought anti-semitism complaints to our attention ?

I think this is a very reasonable outlook on this. Obviously that still means that Novara should make efforts to appologise and make right as far as possible. As a long term Novara supporter I would embrace Jackie getting an interview or even better, becoming one of their regular contributers.

The EHRC isn't sabotaging the movement, he is." I want to see sack cloth and ashes. Nor do I expect to hear any apologies from Aaron and Peter. Your comment that there is not much difference between you I find unsettling. Reading the other posts it sounds more like a revivalist meeting than politics. There is a huge difference between Judaism and Zionism . Judaism , is the Jewish religion of the children of Israel . They were called Israel , after their forefather Jacob , who had his name changed to this . Anyone can convert to Judaism , as was the case of Ruth , the grandmother of King David . She converted to Judaism . What is the huge difference between Judaism and Zionism , is that practicing Jews , live by 613 Mitzvots , Although there were ten commandments , there are 613 Jewish laws . These include , Not to take away from the commandments of the Torah (Deut. 13:1) . In other words , you cannot be selective on what you do , or do not do . To love the stranger (Deut. 10:19) . A stranger is a non Jew . Not to wrong the stranger in speech (Ex. 22:20) . The last two shows that the Jews being expelled , who have no hatred for the people of Palestine , are the ones who are actually living as they should . It is also worth remembering that many Zionists are not even Jews , and many of the various , so called groups that include names like Jewish , Anti Semitism , have none Jews as members . You can draw your own conclusions as to why . My own father was taken at 14 . He lived through the horrors for three years , but lived in that same mental state for the rest of his life . Nightmares , depression , what we now call P.T.S.D. I cannot even start to understand why a people that have gone through so much , now do the same to others . It goes against Jewish law , and many of us are called anti Semites because we will have no part of it .

Given the history of the Green Party attacking trade unionists during their tenures controlling Brighton & Hove Council would not suggest they offer anything different to the Labour Party. The Left quit the Green Party between 2012 and 2014 due to the attacks on low-paid council employees the first time they took control of Brighton & Hove Council (2011 to 2015). I was one of those left-wingers who quit the Green Party in 2014.

The tragic thing about the whole debacle around the troubling antisemitism from some left elements under Corbyn and the backlash from the right it drew, is that it has made it much harder to criticise Israel's policies and the behaviour of its right wing political extremist government, IDF and the settlers. JC himself bears some of the blame, though this opinion will be dismissed by most readers of this piece. But the fact remains he has helped to set back the cause he claims to espouse.
