      In the mid-1980s, Memphis air ambulance Hospital Wing had 2 222 with skis. When Bell went to a different turboshaft by Lycoming, they sold the 222s and went with the A-Star and now the EC-130 from Airbus.

    Watched Airwolf all my kid life, believing that most of the rotor sounds were the actual thing. Then one day, I see a Bell 222 series flying for the first time in my life, years after the Airwolf series had ended and my first reaction was, "It sounds like a blasted Huey!" There it was in the sky, a beautiful helicopter with those massive blades 'slapping' the air exactly the same as the UH-1.

    The Bell 222 is the first to be able to perform a loop.
    With those powerful turbines it made it possible.

    • @nocalsteve
      @nocalsteve 6 лет назад +1

      There are many helicopters that can perform loops and rolls, even the huge Sikorsky CH-53 can do them.

    • @MickB235
      @MickB235 3 года назад +2

      Robustly incorrect. The first helicopter to perform a loop was a sikorsky s52 piloted by Harold Thompson back in 1949, the bell 222 does not have the appropriate rotor system to perform aerobatic manouvers or tolerate negative g's. During the filming of airwolf ,which used the 222, some sequences were shown where the helicopter has gone near inverted and bell helicopter saw this, contacted the producers and they were quoted as saying " don't ever do that again...seriously DON'T DO IT!! " ..... you could loop a 222 but you'd only do it once

    Heres another example of a rotor blade spinning at multiple revolutions of that of the video camera taking the picture /watch?v=jrURKUg4I-I. The video camera is probably taking 45 frames a second and the rotor blades spinning 9 revolutions a second (540rpm). So the video camera is taking a picture when the rotor blades are in the identical position when it took the last picture

    3:12 it seems like the rotor is slowed down deliberately to position it inline with the fuselage, but maybe I'm wrong? Does the pilot have some sort of rotor brake he can apply to position the rotor in a certain way, and presumably secure it against wind influence as well?
    Ha, did a bit of googling, and the concept of a rotor brake on helicopters does exist, I did not know that. I couldn't quickly find out if the 222 has one, but it sure looks like it does.

    A UH-1 is a Bell. Bell is the company that made them. This model is the Bell 222. The "Huey" is the Bell UH-1 Iroquois. Huey is the unofficial name given to it. Just my two cents on this conversation but wanted everyone to know that they are both Bell Helicopters.

    @RacerXGTO, you say a Bell sounds like a UH-1??? you must not of seen a UH-1, they have there own sound and a "Thumping" sound as they come in/by. I live in Pa, and the Nationall Guard use to have a few Hueys that fly over the house and you can hear them miles away because of the "thumping" sound. the 222's dont have that "thump" that is announcing their approach, they have a slight thump but nothing like the Hueys my friend...

  • @Jimp242
    @Jimp242 12 лет назад +1

    Sorry...not a 222UT , they have a teetering rotor. A loop would be a good way to lose the rotor head...something called "Mast Bumping"
    Actually you only get one bump.
    I flew UT's for years in EMS, very under powered with the LTS 101-650 engines.
    This one is a 1982 model.

    • @TheAirwolfpilot
      @TheAirwolfpilot 5 лет назад +1

      Actually Jimmy this is not a 222UT it is a 222A model. The UT had skids. If you flew these you should know that. And there was a 222A model with a 680 four-blade composite bearingless rotor system that was able to do loops and other aerobatic maneuvers. It was N680L which has now been decommissioned, but you can google it and see pictures of it.

    Theres nothing wrong with it. Its an optical illusion. Your eyes see roughly 60fps frames per second. Just like a film is really a series of pictures, your eyes work the same way & the brain compares the picture with the last picture taken, calculates the differences and tells you thats the movement.
    When something spins very fast, it can move quicker than the eye can take pictures. Iand has already spun full circle before the eye takes another picture, giving the illusion it has not moved.
