  • A tradition in the fire service for over 30 years, the Firefighter Combat Challenge jams five obstacles (Stair Climb with High Rise Pack, Hose Hoist, Forcible Entry, Hose Advance, Victim Rescue) into an incredibly arduous course that takes only about 120 seconds of your life. It’s long been billed as the toughest two minutes in sports - so small wonder it’s part of our firefighter recruit academy. Forging a mental and physical toughness into each recruit as sort of a “welcome to the fire service!”, the combat challenge is universally revered (and feared) by all who have done it.
That makes it all that more impressive when Spokane Valley Fire Department’s number #1 guy (V1), Fire Chief Frank Soto Jr. crushed it today, spontaneously stepping up to the plate while watching his new recruits doing their “second of three”.
The video begins with the chief already having completed the six-story stair climb to the top of the tower carrying a 42 lb. high rise pack hose on his shoulder, followed by a hose hoist where he raises a 42 lb. donut roll of hose on a rope up the side of the tower, followed by a rapid trip down the stairs (catching every step), then comes the forcible entry tool...
Just imagine what they were thinking while watching him do it. That’s leadership!
